Metallica's ninth studio album is due the 3rd quarter of 2008.

"The band has been reported to have returned to performing in E tuning, as they did on their first five studio albums, to complement James Hetfield's vocals. The band had previously played in E flat since the recording of Load and dropped C on St. Anger."

"The album's style has been described as more progressive and, at times, melodic, as it features many guitar solos. It has been referred to as the "missing link" between 1988's ...And Justice for All and 1991's Metallica. The album will be Metallica's first studio album to be released since 2003's St. Anger."

The second coming of Metallica.

It hurts me it most likely will never happen. :(

This really doesn't sound like something big is gonna happen with that album.

EDIT: And the... "solo" at 1:47 sounds like a monkey getting ass-raped.

Ugh, nevermind. That shit sounds really lame.

Poor Metallica. :(

They still left the good old albums though. Hard to forget them.

Kirk Hammet should not be allowed to play guitar solos. Hetfield's clean solos are far more memorable.

It would be cool if the new album was a proper return to their thrash roots, but I think I'm more likely to run into Heath Ledger at the grocery store.

That was terrible.Upbeat faggotry. And here I was hoping they'd release another Ride the Lightening.

They've said themselves that, that song won't be on the new album, or the other new shitty song they played. I think this album will be better than St Anger (how could it POSSIBLY BE any worst??). It will be a let down forsure, especially with all the hype. I think it's going to have the black album sound to it.

I don't think they're capable of making anything better at this point, even if only because Hetfield can't do his old vocals anymore.

That reminded me of The Offspring. They should quit now before they pull a Cryptopsy.

Frankly, I only think their debut is solid, and even then, it is only mediocre. I think of Metallica as a singles band, like Megadeth.

I suppose I'm weird, I like everything Metallica. Feel free to rake me over the coals, but I look forward to hearing what they come up with.

You don't like "RIP?"

I enjoy "Holy Wars", "Hangar 18", and "Take No Prisoners". As for the rest of the album (which I've put myself through several listens before coming to this opinion on it), I just feel 'meh'. And even then, it's been a long while since I've felt compelled to listen to any Megadeth song.

I know many people hail it as a brilliant fucking piece of thrash, but anything Megadeth ever did, I feel Overkill did it 10x better. I'm not going to criticize Mustaine for not sounding sinister, I know there can be two sides to playing thrash, and if I want it fast, catchy, and fun, there's always bands like Testament/Overkill/Nuclear Assault/etc. So yeah...

Don't get me wrong though, when Megadeth and Metallica were of the few metal bands I listened to, I loved them very much, and I still consider them important gateway bands.

To answer the Original Question. I think it'd be too little too late. Its like in Full Metal Jacket. When Pvt. Joker said that he didn't love the mother mary and then had to explain that if he reversed himself he would be beaten harder. Metallica, like Pvt Joker, would fall under harsher criticism if they reverted back to their thrash roots. Besides its been so long I doubt they remember how to kick that much ass..

Was thinking the same thing, and I don't even like Metallica. I just thought I'd check out this topic because I'm bored.

+1000

Someone needs to take that damn wah pedal away from Hammet. His playing has really gone downhill and his vibrato is atrocious.

I find it really unlikely that they will go back to their thrash roots (AJFA) as that was so many years ago.

I've never seen a band so enthusiastic about seeing a psychiatrist, lol.

They'd be Slayer. That isn't saying much either.

I like the new song. It isn't thrash. It'll never be thrash. Thrash is dead. I applaud those who are attempting to keep it alive, but let's face it. Is it genuine? Is it parody? Emulation? Tribute?

I think it's mostly due to the changing times, so nowadays, nothing sounds as geniune.

They are trying too hard. They kicked ass back in the hungry artist days, but now that all that money is filling their bellies, they have no inspiration. They once fought against the "system", but now they are a part of it. The first time I heard the black album, I knew it was coming. They should just have a fucking funeral already.

at least slayer sounds somewhat the same as they did 20 years ago unlike metallica who has sucked huge weiner since whatever album was after the black album
