Well, I'm thinking about buying a 360, but I've heard a lot about the technicalities it has and I had a few questions.

Do the fans that you plug in your 360 work? I heard they draw energy from the 360 and melt coords in the 360 or something of that sort, which causes the console to break, but if you send it in to MS they won't replace it because it's the coords that melted, and it's your fault for buying a fan or something.

Where is it best to put the 360?

How is it best to set up the 360, vertical, or horizontally?

Do you just have your name saved somewhere, and copy/paste if you have to log in?

I thought the same thing once I read the username.
That'd be a bitch to type in.

Dude the new 360's work perfectly and its better if you lay them down.

As long as it has an HDMI port it will be the new version that dosnt overheat, except some of the elites, but those are a waste of money.

Also it dosnt matter how position it, the whole "Lay it down, its better for it" is just some stupid myth people for some reason think is true, as are most of the "overheating" remedies people think are true.

Laying it down makes it less susceptible to dumb-assery, pets, and earthquakes toppling it over. If by the grace of god you don't have to worry about any of these, then place it however you want it.

I guess if you have it upright its more prone to been knocked sideways ... which i dunno probably still scratches the shit out of your disks.

I think the extra fan you can get to go on the back of the 360 are a good idea, before i had one my 360 would get really hot after a while but when i got the extra fan it stays very cool, just get a decent one. And whoever was saying about the fans breaking things or melting cords, i think thats utter bullshit because my console doesnt even get hot and i've never had a single problem with my 360, or even a crash.

put your 360 out in the open on a HARD SURFACE (NO CARPETS) do NOT put it in your entertainment center if its congested with a bunch of wires...
(sorta give the power brick some space too)

HORIZONTALLY SET... vertically is just asking for a RRoD.

I personally have mine sitting horizontally on a webster dictionary because i have carpet and the holes have a hard time airin' out on the bottom with carpet... a table would be nice... but yeah for any reason it breaks u get either it fixed or another one fo free.

actually i think why i put it on a dictionary is because i had it standing up and my brother accidentally kicked it over... so yeah... theres advantages to it laying on something.

Oh jeez.

When it's up vertically, the heat transfers to a different area of the XBOX other than leaving it horizontally. The heat is hot enough melt some of the circuitry, which would cause the RROD. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it does not, like in your case, but when it is up vertically, the heat has more of a chance of damaging your XBOX due to the direction the heat is flowing.

I believe the situation has improved with the newer XBOXes, but I believe the risk is still present.

Microsoft kept all that in mind when they designed the Xbox360. When you stand the 360 upright, the heat goes up to the DVD and HDD drives. If any circuitry is affected, the worst you'll get is a disk read error. RRoDs are mainly caused by the GPU(which is at the bottom of an upright 360) overheating. Heatsinks, like the ones inside PCs and inside the 360, work the same whether it's standing up or on its side. That being said, the only difference you'll see in temperatures from the same heatsink in different positions will be based soley on the air that goes into it, which is the same whether the 360 is flat or upright.

I'm logged in, always. I'm everywhere.

Also, I'm thinking about buying one of these cool skins that are like stickers I think, that you can put on your 360, because mine has to be unique and sexier than anyone elses, but I heard they strip it off if you send it in b/c you had a technical problem? Trufax?

Ok thanks for the clear up. However, due to the heat flow, there is still a tad higher chance it can RROD due to the heat flow when it is up vertically, no matter what Microsoft kept in mind.

No, they just send you some random refurb console that another person sent in. Most of the consoles I recieved back had different serial numbers than the console I sent in, yet Microsoft claim it's the same machine.

Yarp Yarp, it be the same, they need to remove the stickers becuase when they fix it the stickers get damaged which would mean if you sent it back it would violate the warranty even though its there fault so they stick new ones on. VWALAA.

Wow, did they buff out the black scuff mark I had on the side of one of my consoles that wasn't there when I got a new machine back with a different serial number too?

an Xbox has no more chance of RROD'ing on its side than it does stood up.

Its better to lay it horizontally because the exhaust holes for the machine are at the bottom. If its vertical then air can only exit through the back.
