Yeah, I just got the RRoD out of the blue. I was playing GTA, stopped for like two hours, then played Orange Box for like an hour and 15 minutes before I shut it off. I waited like another 2 hours, went to start my 360, and saw the infamous red ring of death.

I have no idea what the problem could be. But what the hell do I do now? I'll go search on a microsoft site or something, but yeah, this is really gay. I'm going to be bored shitless the next few weekends.

I haven't tried that yet. However, I did shove the plug up my ass and tried to start it up. It was green for 5 seconds before it turned red.

These threads are the reason why I don't have a 360 already.

I bought used off of craigslist about 6 months after the 360 launched and I've never had a single problem with it.

Did you have an extra fan with it? I put a tabletop fan behind mine blowing into the back of the 360 where all the heat comes out. Without the fan it gets hot as hell, with the fan it's pretty cool.

Had mine for almost a year. I got a 1 piece ring error, restarted and it was fine.

same here, my uncle gave me his launch 360 because he felt bad about me not getting 1 for x mas and it works fine, even the one i recently bought 6 months ago from wal mart... its all about how you treat it i guess.

I'm guessing during your session on GTAIV your motherboard got hot, especially around the main CPU and GPU soldering joints, during the 2 hour break it cooled un-proportionally adding to the internal stresses already present from hundreds of previous uses, only this time the stresses caused failure. Not really significant, only a few nanometres long crack across one of the solder joints.

Now after your second session of playing, during the cooling, instead of the standard thermal stress build up that usually takes place, the tiny fracture within the joint focused the stress built up around the end of the crack causing the propagation of stress to a point of rapid failure right through the solder joint. This results in the solder joint failing and the GPU/CPU component or whatever part happened to fail to lose a vital communication/power link port resulting in a mass failure right across the motherboard. A classic hardware failure or what the world now calls the RROD.

Why has something like this happened? Well thank the European Union and its witch hunt for anything containing lead, lead which happened to be a very useful component in the alloy that we know as solder. Since nothing can contain ‘lead’ solder companies have been pushed into using a lead-free solder, which happens to melt at higher temperature compared to the previous lead-solders. Whoever Microsoft has contracted out to build the 360’s motherboards have shown their inexperience with this new solder since upon inspection, the companies contracted out to fix these 360’s are finding the CPU/GPU and other components haven’t been soldered into place properly. The components are sealed down however the melting and solidification of the solder around the joint is shoddy and weak.

Thank you.

When did you get it? If you got it within the last year, just send it back to Microsoft. My friend just got the RROD and sent it back and got it back in about 4-5 days later. You could try fixing it yourself, but that could result in making it worse/ voiding the warranty.

I forgot when I got it. It might have been 2 years ago. Still, there's a 3 year warranty or something so yeah, I'll just send it back and tell them to fix it.

Why does everyone feel the need to make a fucking thread about their 360 getting RRoD? They then play it off as an abnormal case . . . you misused it and that's what you get, Microsoft made it a like a piece of shit, and that's what happens.

I have survived two and still prefer it over the other consuls out there. Wii comes in second and the PS3 I won't touch with a 12 foot pole.

No one cares. Individual cases don't somehow justify former fail rates as being better than they were. I don't understand why every RROD thread has several people saying "I dunno mayne, I had my console since launch dude and it works fine bro!" No shit. 70% of them should have worked fine (for at least 5 years).

Yeah, I heard that if you try and play games on it then the chances RROD dramtically increase. They're shoddily built, and a lot of them fail purely because of this. Stop blaming the owner. That's like saying if your dog gets hit by a car and dies then it's the owners fault.

I always get RROD'd, after about 5 times of switching it on and off it works fine.

Is the problem with the 360 really that hard for microsoft to fix?

Well if the owner doesnt secure the dog then yeah it is his fault.

What does one red ring in the bottom right corner mean? I just got that today.

Usually that's a loose cable or something, so check they're all plugged in properly. One of my consoles got 1 red ring though and had to be repaired.

99% of the ring codes are availible online. Use some google people.

I don't see how thats possible, unless your AV cable fucked up the port in your xbox. One ring simply means that you don't have your AV cable plugged in.

Easy, I see the problem right there.

Playing Orange box, then out of the blue - RROD

Orange + Blue = Red

Yeah, I got RROD'd 2 days ago. I tried the 360 yesterday and it was working fine. I think it just needs time/lots of switching it on/off for it to work.

And Nocturnal, haha, that was brilliant.
