I don't mean your fav. song that has appeared in a movie.. I mean the best use of a song relating to the scene.
I love the very last scene from the original matrix, when Neo looks at the phone then hangs it up. Right then, Wake Up - Rage Against The Machine kicks in, yyyyyeaaaaaaaaaaaa that always sends a chill down my spine.. its the perfect song for the moment.
Anyone else?

The Ginger Snaps theme in "Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed", which kicks in after Brigitte nearly cuts her throat after realizing that she can't fight changing into a wolf and sinks back into the corner.

I thought the main Scarface theme was completely perfect whenever they played it in that movie, absolutely great, it makes the movie twice is good, which says tons when that movie was so great already.

in fear and loathing, acid trip bathroom scene, "Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit". quote from movie: "oh god, did you eat all this acid?"..."you better pray to god theres some thorzine, other wise you're in bad fucking trouble"
dazed and confused, theres a bunch but "Alice Cooper - School's Out For Summer" was prety cool when all the kids are gettin out.
big lebowski when the dude is druged by jacky treeborn, "Kenny Rogers - Just Dropped In", and the bowling scene with the jesus "Gypsy Kings - Hotel California" ~spanish version.
movie quote for ya: jesus q: "Let me tell you something, bandejo. You pull any of your crazy shit with us, you flash a piece out on the lanes, I'll take it away from you, stick it up your ass and pull the fucking trigger 'til it goes "click."", dude: "jesus", jesus q: "You said it man. Nobody fucks with the Jesus.", walter: "Eight year-olds, Dude."
The Killing Moon, at the beginning of Donnie Darko. Perfect for the scene and movie.
i also liked when they played "Tears For Fears - Head Over Heals" when they jump out of the bus and they're going through the halls.

Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit in Platoon and also Tracks of my Tears (forgotten singer) from the same movie...

C'mon, it has to be 'Tiny Dancer' by Elton John from Almost Famous where the group are singing it on the tour bus... That was easily my favorite music-to-scene part of a movie.
Honorable mention: Cavalleria Rusticana; played over two great scenes...
1. De Niro shadowing at the start of Raging Bull, and
[Spoiler]
2. The Godfather part 3, where Mary is shot on the stairs of the opera and Michael lets out that brilliant silent scream at the climatic point of the score.

The Mission - starring De Niro and Jeremy Irons, that had great music... really touched a nerve...
Monty Python and Holy Grial - the little tune that plays whenever they 'ride' over the crest of a hill or sumthin it is fantastic i want a little theme tune like that hehehe
My favorite is when in The Lizzie Mcguire movie when she is singing in italy and she's looking around at all the sites

A lot of you mentioned some good ones that I dig on...another one I like that I've seen recently is when "Battle Without Honor or Humanity" kicks in during Kill Bill Volume 1 as the Crazy 88's are entering the club.
Also, "Little Green Bag" during Resevoir Dogs in the beginning as they are walking was absolutely perfect.
Whoever mentioned Pulp Fiction, I'm right on board with you too. I dig on the way Tarentino incorporates music into his films. ..

I liked Fall In the Light at the end of Strange Days when Ralph Fiennes kisses the chick, or any of the other songs in it.

In reservoir dogs, when Mr. Blonde is "taking care" of the policeman, Stealers Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle with You" plays, and he dances to it as he cuts off the cop's ear and drenches him in gasoline. That is easily the funniest torture scene in a movie, and the music is fitting. "Did you hear that? Heh heh."

Adagio For Strings from Platoon, in the scene where Elias is being chased by the V.C. and the helicopter takes off without him. Classic. Oh, and pretty much every tune in An American Werewolf in London. Everthing about that movie kicks ass. :D

When "House of the Rising Sun" starts up as people are being killed in Casino.
Beethoven's Op. 131 playing in Band of Brothers as the Germans were cleaning up a town, and when they were into the concentration camp.
I have two favorites from Magnolia. When "One" is playing during the opening scene, showing the various characters you're going to meet. Then, towards the end where all of the characters are each seeing certain parts of "Wise Up".
I can't remember it off the top of my head, but I BELIEVE it was "Sweetness Follows" that played as Tom Cruise was on the top of the building at the end of Vanilla Sky.

when predator blew the fuck up in predator one, and ah-nold walks out of the plume of dust. it plays a trumpet tune, and it makes the thing just fucking perfect. when i hear that tune, it just fills me with homage for our soldiers, living or dead... its used in predator 2, when danny glover is at his friends grave, it kinda works there too i suppose, but they dont use it for long enough, i remember.

Adagio For Strings from Platoon, in the scene where Elias is being chased by the V.C. and the helicopter takes off without him. Classic.
Totally. True.
This film rocked my life man and that scene is possibly the most memorable in film history - i have a huge poster of that image and i love it that film is definatly in my top 5 of ALL TIME!
Anyone mentioned Jaws yet?
or Jurassic Park?
or E.T?
or Close Encounters of the Third Kind?
see where im going with this?
Speilberg movies rule, and John Williams music is the best in film history. Period.

Amen on the Magnolia posts! Paul Thomas Anderson has a gift for soundtracks.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Wes Anderson. All three of his movies, Bottle Rocket, Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums have the most amazing soundtracks, mainly consisting of British invasion tracks from the 60's. Standouts include the Who's "A Quick One While He's Away" during the "revenge montage" and the Faces' "Ooh la la" at the closing scene of Rushmore; and Nick Drake's "The Fly" when Luke Wilson gets off the bus IIRC, and Paul Simon's "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard" when Gene Hackman plays with the kids.
Great stuff.

yeah i love the Royal Tenebaums Soundtrack that version of Hey Jude at the beginning of the film was done especially for the film because Paul McCartney wouldnt give them permission to use the beatles version... and the Van Morrison track at the end at his funeral is wicked as well

Kill Bill volume1: Death rides a horse (when she screams for Oren, and cuts sophies arm off)
Kill Bill volume2: Sunny Road to Salina (as shes walking to Budds trailer in the desert)
Goodfellas: Rags to Riches (opening, as Henry is taking us back to 1958)
Best goes to:
Kill Bill Volume1: The lonely shepard. as Bill says to sophie : "Does she know, her daughter is still alive?"

#2 donnie darko at the end when it plays "mad world" by gary jule(s?). perfect song for the scene when it cuts through the different characters and shows their emotions. definatly one of my favorite scenes in a movie from a "critics" standpoint
#1i dont know what the song is called but its in "once upon a time in the west" when charles bronson is in the bar and the guy swings the light towards his face and hes sitting there playing his harmonica and playing that trademark western song. (you know dun dun dun du dunnnnnn.. du dun dunnn..) not really a song but awesome scene. OHH and speaking of i just had a sub today and his name was Mr. Leone and he just happened to be none other that of THE Sergio Leones grandson. and shortly after he divulged this information, i naturaly proceeded to worship his undoubtedly large penis which he surely inherited from his godly grandfather.

Either the use of Beethoven's 9th in Clockwork Orange, or a Sigur Ros tune called "Njosnavelin (Nothing song) in Vanilla sky when david Aimes chucks himself off the building at the end.
Other contenders:
Q. Lazzarus's "Goodbye Horses" from silence of the lambs when Buffalo Bill tucks his cock and balls between his legs and dances around like a tranny.
Philip Glass's tune for Candyman.
And just to keep it real Danny Elfman's score for Edward Scissorhands.

Donnie Darko has some of the most amazing scenes that fit with the music
Intro - Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon
Intro to School/characters - Tears for Fears - Head Over Heels
(the intro was apparently changed in the directors cut, so there's a different song, which i believe isnt as good  )
ALSO the Labyrinth, i dunno if anyone even likes that movie, but the david bowie songs in it, they're so damn catchy lol... and some of them make the movie way better. gotta love bowie.

on another note, if you have a chance to check out metallica's cover of that song, its amazing... very mellow and laid back, they have that fat harmonica dood from blues traveler help them out, and some old blues guitarist/vocalist
