(CNN) -- School administrators in Ohio voted Friday to begin the process of firing a middle school teacher accused of burning a cross into a student's arm and refusing to keep his religious beliefs out of the classroom.
A middle school student in Ohio says his teacher branded a cross on his arm.

A middle school student in Ohio says his teacher branded a cross on his arm.

The Mount Vernon School Board passed a resolution to terminate the employment of John Freshwater, an eighth-grade science teacher for the past 21 years.

Freshwater, according to an independent report, used an electrostatic device to mark a cross on the arm of one of his students, causing pain to the student the night of the incident and leaving a mark that lasted for approximately three weeks.

According to the Ohio Department of Education, the student's family has filed a lawsuit.

Freshwater was also reprimanded several times for refusing to move his Bible from his classroom desk and teaching creationism alongside evolution, according to the 15-page independent report. The report also cites evidence that Mr. Freshwater told his students that "science is wrong because the Bible states that homosexuality is a sin and so anyone who is gay chooses to be gay and is therefore a sinner."

The Board of Education of the Mount Vernon City School District met in special session Friday to address the case.

Freshwater has the option to contest the process by requesting a formal hearing before the Board of Education. Neither Freshwater nor his attorney could be reached by CNN for comment.

Teachers really need to keep their religion out of class.

I remember in my film class when a few students started debating about the execution of "Tookie" the crips founder. The teacher gave a lecture "All that matters is whether or not he accepted Jesus Christ into is life before he died, because I guarantee that if he didn't he is burning in hell as we speak."

Wow. This guy set religion back about 30 years

And religion set scientific research back about 500 years.

Dark ages, anyone? Also, stem cells.

In my grade 12 world history class we had a supply teacher who was catholic and carried a pretty ignorant faith about her church. A student in the class spent the whole time educating her off his laptop about the paedophile priest protocol the church has and the enormous cover up that's been going on.

In the end, she just kept saying "But the pope is such a nice man, he wouldn't do that, the site must be lying." to which the student responded "Why would it?"

Perfect. I wonder if it's people like this behind our piss poor education rankings? Hell, even take religion out. I'm sure there are fucking idiots teaching our kids to be idiots every day, all over the country.

You misunderstood. I meant the perception, not religion itself.

Exactly. This idiot doesn't represent religion, he represents a negative perception of it.

Luckily, we haven't had any problems in the US, but one of my friends kept getting pissed about the information on Darwin and questioned why they taught it in World History. I then went on to school her knowledge on the subject of scientific matters and the contributions of Darwin. I recently think she became agnostic because of a bulletin I posted as well.

BASTARD!

No but seriously, religion aside, this is ridiculous... IT'S RELIGULOUS! Teachers used to be able to hit children as punishment for bad behaviour, which was acceptible in some cases, but sometimes went overboard, but burning a cross into a 13(14?) year old childs' arm is unacceptable and he absolutely should be fired for it, jailed and possibly sued too.

But the family better not sue the school too... it's not their fault. Just the teacher. Milk that lawsuit as much as they can, fine, but not the school too.

I don't know that they have sued the school, although they probably will because... you know... it's America, but they shouldn't.

The kid should stop bitching. He was the first in his class to have a tattoo. A temporary one, albeit, but at least he had one, and chicks dig tats.

I never thought I would say this but I completely agree with everything you said in that post. Well, except for the bastard part. :)
