LOS ANGELES - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday, a spokesman said. He was 71.
Carlin, who had a history of heart and drug-dependency problems, died at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PDT after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.
Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine called “Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television.” A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of the routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court. In the 1978 case, Federal Communications Commission vs. Pacifica Foundation, the top U.S. court ruled that the words cited in Carlin’s routine were indecent, and that the government’s broadcast regulator could ban them from being aired at times when children might be listening.
Carlin’s comedic sensibility often came back to a central theme: humanity is doomed.
“I don’t have any beliefs or allegiances. I don’t believe in this country, I don’t believe in religion, or a god, and I don’t believe in all these man-made institutional ideas,” he told Reuters in a 2001 interview.
Carlin, who wrote several books and performed in many television comedy specials, is survived by his wife Sally Wade, and daughter Kelly Carlin McCall.
Nailed down in bold why I loved the guy.

I used to enjoy some of his earlier stand-up comedy, he was very amusing. As of late, however, it seemed he strayed from being funny to just complaining about things. Regardless, I grew up listening to Richard Pryor and George Carlin, I'll miss the old asshole.

Dammit I made this thread first!Indeed you did; but it was hijacked away from you by someone who knew a secret one-upsmanship way to get ahead of you on the list. I especially liked the movie (made for TV??) in which Carlin played a Bishop (Cardinal?) trying to ptotect his Church from a couple of Fallen Angels.
George Carlin was from Morningside Heights on New York's Upper West side; in his standup routines, he claimed to be from Harlem. When someone from Fort Worth noted that Harlem describes a Negro community and questioned him about the inconsistency, he replied that he was from 'White Harlem'. I guess that fits me, also: According to Harry Belafonte, he lived "in a ghetto;" on 162nd Street between Amsterdam & Edgecomb Aves., about 6-blocks fro the Audubon Ballroom, wher Malcom X. was shot & killed. I lived about 3-blocks from Belafonte; and I would describe his neighborhood back then as an upper middle class black community, like 'Sugar Hill'
I grew up a few blocks from George Carlin - had some H.S. classmates who lived on the same block (West 135th Street) as George Carlin. There was a Bar on the Southeast Corner of 135th and Amsterdam Ave. where white folks didn't go.
These neighborhood facts don't detract anything from Carlin's brilliant work as a Comedian.

George Carlin has always seemed to be on my same wavelength and he was fucking hilarious to boot. Here's a quote of his I really like. It seems almost Taoist...
See I don't worry about the little things: bees, trees, whales, snails. I think we're part of a greater wisdom than we will ever understand. A higher order. Call it what you want. Know what I call it? The Big Electron. The Big Electron...whoooa. Whoooa. Whoooa. It doesn't punish, it doesn't reward, it doesn't judge at all. It just is. And so are we. For a little while.

One of my favorite clips from him.
You have to keep in mind that Carlin's comedy is composed of rants on the stupidity of people and their various institutions mixed with philosophical undertones. It's the truth in what he speaks, and how he goes about delivering this truth, that makes him funny, in my opinion.

Just reading the comments under his videos i've been watching... it's a shame but a lot of Christians are jerking off to the fact that he's dead. Everywhere i see comments like "Now he's burning in hell where he belongs".
Just goes to show that what i've been saying for a while is correct. They want all Atheists and other non-Christians dead and in eternal agony, those peace loving christians do.

Indeed, Christians are guilty of wishing eternal agony on others. The entire concept (as carlin once said) was about suffering.

Leave him alone. Supbro doesn't make special appearances. But for George he did.
I'm both Catholic and a fan of George Carlin. I was sad looking at the paper seeing he had died. Despite his views on organized religion, I'll be praying for him tonight. His routines forced us to question authority, even going as far as questioning our faith. Personally, I found his rhetoric strengthened my faith, and for that I am thankful to him.
The world is minus one great comedian today.

I hope you're not praying to god on his day off...
Anyway, take a look at the comments on his videos. Last time i looked most of them had degenerated into Christians jacking off about his death and starting flame wars.
Seems like quite a large number to me. I wonder if you sit and wish it in private. Wish it was back to how it used to be... people being burned alive and whatnot.

.... How many abusive comments are on there exactly? A few hundred? And how many Christians in the United states? Approximately 200,000,000. I don't think you can seriously draw any conclusions about Christians in general due to the conduct of a few.
As to whether I secretly wish he were "burned alive," I can't really respond to that. All I can say is that I'm telling the truth, I didn't take you for that kind of atheist, Dayve.
