First, buy a flashcart if you haven't already. R4 is the best supported and reliable one out there.

Final Fantasy Tactics 2 just came out for the DS yesterday.

I'm currently playing Professor Layton in the Curious Village which is pretty good. It's a short game though.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is fantastic. But the whole repetition of previous levels by the OMGZ UPSIDE CASTLE theme is kinda lame.

Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime is awesome. The game is split into a sort of Zelda style gameplay, and a strategy type of tank battle gameplay. The Zelda portion doesn't have too much replayability, but the tank battles are great.

Also, Kirby's Canvas Curse makes fantastic use of the touch screen, and I definitely recommend it.

Final Fantasy III DS - this is a remake of the Japanese Final Fantasy 3, and the first time it's been officially translated for the NA market (original FF3US was FF6JP). Unfortunately it's a pretty boring game.

Final Fantasy IV is coming out next month.

Other FF games:
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales
Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings

This man speaks the truth. I am at the last level and I have given up.

I liked Final Fantasy 12 Reverent Wings. That was pretty fun. Kind of like an RTS.

You will probrably need a tiny SD card, but they are cheap and you can get them pretty much anywhere, Walmart/radioshack, that kind of place.

No. It does not do high density. 2 gig max, with 4gigHD being HIGHLY unstable, and lsoes saved games quite often.

To be more specific, the R4 only accepts microSD cards. The R4 does not work with microSDHC cards.

microSD generally goes up to 2GB, anything higher than that is usually microSDHC. Either way, it should be clearly labeled somewhere if the memory you're buying is microSD or microSDHC.

The M3 DS Real supports microSDHC, it looks like a better flash card all around than the R4.

The M3 is updated less frequently and more and more new games are starting to not work with it, with little to no help from devs. It isn't worth it.

So is this like the DS' Pandora's Battery?

appleb
06-27-2008, 05:15 PM
I don't think an R4 is anything like a Pandora Battery. I don't own a PSP but from everything I've read, you have to jump through hoops to make the Pandora Battery work properly.

I mean, for an R4 you just copy the .nds file onto the memory card, put the memory card in the R4, then put the R4 in your DS like a regular cartridge.

Now lets look at the Pandora Battery FAQ:

1) Pandora's batteries can NOT be blocked through Firmware Updates.

2) To format memory stick: Put mspformat.exe the C: and use Run, type cmd, on the black screen type cd c:\ and hit enter, type mspformat.exe DriveLetter (space in between these two)
(OPTIONAL) To format memory stick: Once memory stick has been connected to the pc through the PRO DUO Adapter or through the PSP's USB connection, in "My Computer" look for its Removable Device and Right-Click-->Format...-->check mark Quick Format and hit Start.
VISTA USERS To formatting memory stick (Memory Stick Stick Duo PRO not less than 512MB): Put mspformat.exe the C: and use Run, type cmd, on the black screen type cd c:\ and hit enter, type in format DriveLetter (space in between these two).
Now you should be able to run "msinst.exe" correctly. This is not completely proven to work.

3) If problems with writing the IPL to memory stick: (make sure msinst.exe and the msipl.bin are in the C: ) use Run, type cmd, on the black screen type cd c:\ and hit enter, type msinst.exe DriveLetter msipl.bin (space in between these three)

4) After executing msinst.exe (above note), you might get
"write MS BOOT CODE
C:\>". Ignore it you are done.

5) (Linux Only) To do "mspformat" and "msinst": http://psp.jim.sh/fanjita/linux.txt

6) There might by updates for bugfixes.

7) Nand backups are saved as nand-dump.bin but in order to be restored they need to be renamed to nandimage.flash

8) Works on 1st and SOME 3rd party batteries. COMPATIBILITY LIST by Player_X_

9) 32 MB memory card are NOT supported, try anything higher.

10) A "Special" memory stick can be used as a normal one BUT if you want to get rid of its IPL, format it in the PSP. Most PC will preserve it when formatting.

11) The "Special" files can NOT be used on a normal memory stick. It must have an IPL.

12) FAKE memory sticks appear to be working.

13) Once the a PSP is downgraded or unbricked using the 1.5 update in the root, the you have a fully installed 1.5.

14) The 1.5 UPDATE.PBP can be replace with any other Official Update But NOT with a Custom firmware one such as M33's. First unbrick\downgrade (to 1.5) then upgrade through the XMB.

15) In order to convert Pandora's Battery to a normal one: Turn PSP on with Power Cable plugged in but Pandora's Battery and Memory stick out, once in the XMB but both of them in. Under GAME execute the Pandora's Battery Creator not the Firmware Installer. In the Menu, press [].

16) It won't work in +4GB one because of the recovery firmware being 1.50 kernel based... however that's a matter of luck, it actually "could" work with a 8 GB, but not warranty of that.

17) The downgrader of the recovery firmware already has the patch to patch only the key 5.

18) For non-patched Key 5 TA-082/TA-086 PSPs, the recovery firmware itself, despite being 1.50 kernel based, can boot into ta-082+ without any keys patched (not even key 5), because it is patched directly at ipl level.

19) ANY PSP can be recover even if it has a corrupted IPL or idstorage destroyed, unless it has hardware issues.

20) It is unknown if it will work the PSP Slim & Lite, though Pandora's batteries will fit the new PSPs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlaySta...le_Slim_&_Lite

21) Even if the PSPs do NOT support 1.5 kernel, now with custom IPL, there is no need of 1.50 kernel to boot CFW, other firmware kernels can be used, though 1.5 is more "Dev-friendly"

22) Pandora's Batteries are charged the same way as the normal ones.

23) If you BRICKED your "memory stick" while formatting and HAVE CFW: Load your PSP in Recovery Mode (press R while turning power on) or just remove the battery and put it back in) then Choose Toggle USB and properly format your memory stick through there.

24) To Make or Restore a Nand-Backup: Turn PSP on without Power Cable BUT with BOTH Pandora's memory stick and battery inserted. From the menu, O and will be dumped to PSP root under nand-dump.bin but in order to be restored it needs to be renamed to nandimage.flash. Once renamed, boot into this same menu and press [] to restore it.

25) Pandora's battery CAN mess up your idstorage by using someone else's nand-dump.bin/nandimage.flash (bios dump), ONLY if you choose the option of flashing the nand WITH the idstorage with this button combination (L+R+START+SELECT). But using someone else's bios dump is safe if you flash it without the idstaorage, however you CAN NOT use other psp's CUSTOM Firmware nand on a different psp because of sigchecks.

26) If you get a cannot write system.dreg after pressing X in pandora's menu, get a 1.50 nand image from another working PSP and install it on yours WITHOUT the Idstorage.

I made the Pandora's Battery. It's pretty sweet. ;)

The only problem I had was doing the mspformat.exe on a computer that just wouldn't do it. And, lifting the pin in the battery. You need a good eye and a steady hand.

That would work but 1 gig is really all you need. I have a 1 gig micro SD and i can fit about 12-16 games depending on their size into the memory stick.

Speak of the devil, I just received a brand new DS Lite as a graduation gift from my girlfriend (I wanted clothes, but ah). Anyways, I was a huge PSP hacker back in the day, but got bored and sold out. Would somebody mind explaining to me how to run Roms on the lite? Just buy the R4 thing online, plug in and play?

Edit: and ha, I got the Zelda game as well. So far... it's okay, I guess. Not liking the whole control scheme, but I guess i'm not used to it yet. Gonna get guitar hero next.

haha yeah you just put the .nds games on the micro SD card, and then plug the card into your R4 and will end up after you turn on the DS with a list of games to pick from.

i might get that guitar hero game...gah this is hard

So is this like the DS' Pandora's Battery?

No. It's a different method entirely. The R4 is like an emulator between your DS and your SD card, the battery is simply a tool for allowing your original PSP to do that by itself.

I have a pandora's battery as well, seperate from my PSPs battery.

Its a hacked battery that allows you to install custom firmware (from a pre-existing memory card with the files on it) onto your PSP. It does nothing else than allow this process.
