This is fantastic news for Iraqis. Their oil output has increased to around 2.5 million barrels per day with an industry dominated by the state oil company. This will not only provide jobs for Iraqis, but should provide a huge windfall to the Iraqi government (which is reliant on oil for 90% of its budget). The IMF estimates Iraq's economy to grow 7% this year, and this is definitely a step in the right direction. The richer the Iraqis get, the more they will be able to cover their own reconstruction costs.

Four Western oil companies are in the final stages of negotiations this month on contracts that will return them to Iraq, 36 years after losing their oil concession to nationalization as Saddam Hussein rose to power.

Exxon Mobil, Shell, Total and BP — the original partners in the Iraq Petroleum Company — along with Chevron and a number of smaller oil companies, are in talks with Iraq's Oil Ministry for no-bid contracts to service Iraq's largest fields, according to ministry officials, oil company officials and an American diplomat.

It's Bush's fault that the Democratic-controlled Congress is preventing off shore drilling, too.

Offshore drilling would do nothing to bring down gas prices which are needed right NOW not 30 years from now.

The Democrat Congress isn't exactly doing a bangup job but imo, this drilling scheme the repubs keep using to make them look bad is tiring.

I don't understand how people can still defend this asshole. He's a joke. The executive administration has a serious credibility issue, and the checks and balances system has all but been removed from the three party government.

I completely agree that this democratic congress is a waste of space too. They were better off when they had no say. At least then they weren't responsible for the Hindenburg type performance that we've come to know and expect from our government. But this isn't any excuse for the piss poor job that Bush has done while in office.

Oh, I agree with you. I consider Bush to be somewhat of a poor, marginal president, and I'm a Republican too. But I can't stand people blaming everything on the guy, ranging from the economy to fuckin Hurricanes. And he isn't the worst president, its just that the media makes him to be a total dictator. And it doesn't help that he can't pronounce words correctly, he'd be a good comedian with that voice, but not a president who can't pronounce right.

I feel that he is just trying to do his best (which obviously isn't enough), and became president at the worst time ever. Iraq wasn't his idea, it was his dad's and Clinton's. Clinton could have captured Osama, and September 11th wouldn't have forced a new burden on the government. Of course he fucked up some things big time, but not everything is his fault. And the dems and Congress aren't doing jack shit purposely and no one cares.
