Fits perfectly with the other stick, which is a 256 mb. But I've tried using both of them and it only reads to 512 mb. If I remove the 256, then the gig alone reads as a 256 mb.
I ran a scan on Crucial.com to see how much RAM this piece of shit could hold and it's 2 gb. I don't understand why it's not reading at least the full gigabyte. Anyone know if there could be something I did wrong or did I just get ripped off? I don't think I got ripped off, since the 256 has 8 of those chips and the 1 gb has 16, front and back.

Livi what motherboard do you have? You might have to flash your BIOS to an updated version or there could be an issue with your memory channels, assuming your motherboard has dual channel support.

I have no idea. I searched for what a Dell 2400 has and didn't turn up anything relevant. There's only a single memory channel as far as I could tell.

My RAM doesn't have motorcycle poles.

Some mobo RAM slots have a limit on the amount of RAM usable per slot.
Sounds like your limit is 256MB. A BIOS update might help that like someone said up there.
Ok, nevermind.

If that's your Dell Dimension 2400, then I don't know since they sell 1GB sticks.
Oh, hang on.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2400/en/sm_en/specs.htm
^Says it only takes up to 512MB sticks of RAM.

It's as close to what a 2400 is. Mine was slightly customized for 256 mb for some shitass reason I can't remember now.
I must sound like I know nothing, but how would I go about this BIOS update?
edit: 512 is a hell of a lot better than 256 though. I'm starting up programs in half the time.

This is probably the easiest way to go about this:
go here:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&~ck=gp
and enter your service tag number. It should be located on the side panel or the back. That should give you your computer specs and bring you to the download page where you can download an updated BIOS and a program that will flash it for you.

Why didn't you just download it?

Version 2.91
^That's based on the assumption you run XP Home.
That'll tell you your chipset (which should be something like Intel 845GV). From there go here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx
And get to it from that menu on the left. It should show any BIOS updates.

I forgot about this.
I checked the updates to the BIOS in the links, and I already have them. There's nothing newer than 2003. Guess Dell doesn't really give a shit.
512 works I guess. Hopefully, I don't have to use this computer for much longer, but as long as Diablo 2 loads well, it's satisfactory.

You best be joking, nigger. I run XP HOME on this shit. XP HOME. I got it for FREE. 5 years AGO. I updated it to SP2 4-5 MONTHS ago.
My weeaboo Russian tech adviser from California told me I should downgrade to Win 2000. But he uses Linux, so I don't know how much I can trust him. XP has been running fine.
I've only owned three computers. First one was some stupid piece of shit my father brought home when I was 3 or something. 80s orange screen type. Receptionist computer. Kept it for half a year and only know of it from one extremely vague memory and stories passed down. Second was a 1995 Phillips something that had 32 mb of RAM and 4 GB of HD space. Kept that one up until 2003.
At least I've never had a Macintosh.

If you are running them in the same pair of slots (i.e they are right next to each other), your doing it wrong. RAM has to be in equal pairs, EQUAL. This means you have to either have two 1 gigs running together, or 2 512's running together, you can't mix and match. That's why your system won't pick up both. Hope this helps.

Actually that only applies for a dual channel setup. If you have dual channel support and wanted to run it in this mode, then both memory channels must contain an equal amount of memory. This means you have to put equal pairs of memory into separate channels...sometimes you can even put unequal pairs as long as both channels equal the same capacity, but this isn't important.
If you have a memory controller with only single channel support, then most of the time you are allowed to mix and match memory capacities. It doesn't matter. Usually your larger memory capacity stick goes in the first slot.

What'd you pay for it?
You should have bought a 1TB internal with a SATA-->IDE converter deal. Then, when you get a new PC, you can just use that. Unless I'm missing the point of an external drive.

It was $240 originally, but it was on some sale. Got it for $140. I don't think I can put in another HD into this computer without it severely messing it up. The power supply would probably fail at that point. External HDs use 2.0 USB and are plugged into regular outlets, so they're slower, but more realistic for me to store shit I don't access too frequently but that takes up unneeded space on it.
I'll get several internal terabyte HDs when I actually begin to build a computer.

I will if they're cheap enough.
Same ones I've had since the 90s. I haven't bought any TV yet, but I will sooner or later.

The price should come down a lot in the next few month to a year. I'm reading this book now, "The Singularity Is Near", about technology which is achieving unheard of performance with lower costs.
Check it out.
Just go all out on your next PC and use the monitor as a TV, too.

lul wuts Singularity? Is that like a black hole? Sounds pretty stupid to use black holes in computers.
I have a little PC called a PS3 that I'm using on the TV. I'll get a 14" LCD or something for the PC.

No. Get a TV. Hook up your new PC and PS3 to it.
Singularity is the merging of man and beast using technology. Soon we'll be able to possess a dog's sense of smell or a cat's reflexes. Also, the intelligence of cetaceans will soon follow. It's pretty complicated, but that's the basics.
