What do you guys think the scariest movie ever is? It would be nice if it was a true story as well, otherwise it just is hard to be scared by it.
I was probably most scared by The Exorcist, because at the time, I thought it was based on a true story, actually I have thought that until just recently when I actually did some hardcore researching and found otherwise.
I still say The Exorcist is the scariest movie I have ever seen though, because even if it wasn't based on a true story, the movie makes it look quite real and makes you think that it could really happen.

I thought The Exorcist was based on a true story, but happened to a boy instead of a girl?

Because as of late, thats all hollywood can do. Take old ideas and put a spin on it, and force feed it back to the masses expecting them to accept their SHIT. Just look at all the comic book movies. its terrible. some ass-clown 45yr old loser sees a trailer for a comic character he read about as a child, remembers back when he didn't suck so much and then forces his entire family to go and watch, wasting $10 a head to see some CRAP that hollywood producers pulled out of their asses.

When Hollywood can't think of what else to do in a movie they always put in some pretty effects and some explosions, problem solved.
Too much action not enough story in 90% of todays films.

No, I had thought that for a few years after I saw the new one as well, but I found out otherwise, if you want to get the full story about the investigation you can message me on either MSN Messenger or Aol Instant Messenger.

The Shining with Jack Nicholson in it was fucking stupid. I read the book and it did not follow the book 1 fucking bit. Like in the movie theres a maze, wtf theres no maze in the book. That pissed me off so much. Like holy shit.... There was absoulutly nothing from the book in that movie except for the hotel. Whatever director made that movie pretty much made up his own gay version.
The new shining which is like 4 hours long is the scariest movie ive ever seen, that one follows the book dead on.

well having not read the book, and seen both movies, I think the old one was better. more suspense, better acting.
Wait...the boiler blew up in the new one right?

Seriously, I actually found the Blair Witch Project to be scary. I'm sure i'll get made fun of for it. But it was really scary! The first one was because I thought it was real, and the second one was because of the ESREVER stuff. Like the one part in the movie when the door opens and you can see a child's face on it for a split second. Scared the hell out of me.

in some cases yeah, but Hollywood is still making some great movies, the comic hero franchise is just a temporary phase that Hollywood is going through. There are plenty of new ideas out there they just need to be realised... Maybe if the public stopped going to see 'Jerry Bruckiemer Re-Imagining Movies' and saw movies with actually good acting and good storylines then Hollywood would get the hint to make loads of them... BUT THEN all you haters will just find another reason to MOAN and BITCH about movies in general...

No, Hollywood was doing just fine up until a couple of years ago. Then action movies began to fall into the "Fast and the Furious" trend, horror films became mock-ups of "Scream", comedy movies tried to make themselves the next "American Pie", and romance movies followed the same old "Guy and girl meet, fall in love. Quirky sidekick helps out girl. Guy does something bad and girl hates him. Guy redeems himself and they get back together" formula. Then the remakes and revisions of old stories (Peter Pan, etc.) began reeling out.
Indie/low-budget and Canadian cinema seem to be the only sources for movies that aren't dead-set on following stereotypical Hollywood formulas in a simple attempt to make money/try to force an annoying personality even more on the moviegoing public.

well ive been involved in this argument to much and am bored stiff of it so im just gonna say that may be your opinion but i disagree and think the last few years Hollywood has released some great movies.
LOTR has practically re-written the way Epic war movies are made... for the better in my opinion.
Cop movies such as Training Day and Narc are giving us a more gritty, hard hitting insight into the usual boring 'Buddy Cop' movies
This superhero movie phase is just a temporary Hollywood franchise, which is the nature of what they do as a business, now i know you know this... just like everyone else... so instead of moaning about it why not just accept it and accept that it will change eventually as Hollywood franchises eventually do.
Scary Movie - Nightmare on Elm Street 1 (one scene gave me a virus, i had to go to hospital and everything - no joke!)

the shining with jack nicholson is much better, it has very little to do with the book because it is only BASED on it, and that is why the movie is called "Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining'"
as for the director, he is a VERY good director. he directed movies like clockwork orange, full metal jacket, 2001: space odyssey, sparticus, and other very good movies :)

I didn't do any hardcore researching, but I did research about it. Most the sites I went to had the same story, and the story is pretty much just like the movie except the girl was a boy. If you know of a site or something where I can read up more about it, let me know.

yea the exorcist gets my vote for scariest, hands down
its not another damn blood and gore killing spree (G A Y) and it looks fact-based (IMO) and the acting was incredible, the story is pry 1 of the best horror ever conceived, and they put it together to make a kickass movie

i saw a small documentary about the exorcist in a philosophy class. i think they said it was a boy that was molested by his aunt, then someone died in his family which triggered a psychotic episode. its been a while now since i took that class so i dont remember exactly how it went. ...who knows
i also vote for exorcist. i saw the movie when i was about 6 years old, i couldn't even look at the tv, hehe. since then i dont remember seeing a movie that could scare me so much. being so young that probably ruined any future scary movies for me.

Ok, obviously all you guys have heard the same story about the boy who was molested by his aunt and they played with Oija boards and all that kind of stuff. Well, that stuff is all great if you want to scare the crap out of yourself, but if you want to know the ACTUAL FACTS ABOUT THE EXORCIST, go to this site.
http://www.strangemag.com/exorcistpage1.html
By the way, there are 5 parts to it, so 5 different pages, so don't just read the first page and think it was crap lol, but make sure you go to that site if you are really interested, because you will have to be up for quite a read.

edit: oops...also, the documentary i saw talked about both sides of the story, skepticism and a exorcism.
i read the first part of the article, good stuff. it reminded me of some other things. like i remember the year 1949 brought up a bunch from what i saw. also i think they interviewed a priest (that was like 16 at the time) that helped in an exorcism with the boy. he also mentioned the bed shaking. i'll keep reading..
very cool story either way.
edit: bah, i have a bad memory...i remember my dad saying how this movie scared the living shit out of him. he was brought up catholic and taught that things like that were REAL!(hes not like that now :P ) heh, probably why it also scared the living shit out of me.

No. Kinda boring actually, but the mask ball scene was pretty creepy the first time I saw it.
Lets see:
1. American Wherewolf in London - I had Wherewolf nightmares for years, I must have been 8 or 9 when I saw it. God bless HBO!
2. Poltergeist - I have issues to this day (almost 30) with this flick.
3. Blair Witch Proj - different kind of fear, saw it in the theatre so it had more of an impact on me.
4. Event Horizon - I almost walked out, made me tense as hell. Saw it on video a few years after and was embarrased that it got to me.
5. Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley: The Case of the Volcano Mystery - I don't do twins. :p
6. Alien - come on, if you saw one of those things you would shit.
7. Hellraiser - creeeeeepy
8. The Shining - still makes me tense
9. Omen - more of just a fan of it.
10. The Exorcist - still gets the job done to this day.
I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but I'm not that much of a horror fan, I'm a warmonger.

You guys have exceedingly Good Taste, but there is one Film conspiciously missing from all of these great memories.
There is a film called Ju-On: The Grudge. Perhaps some of oyu have heard of it, perhaps not. If you have not seen it, I would urge all of you to, because in my opinion, years from now, it will take the top spots in these lists. It hails from Japan, and is hands down one of the most frightening films Ihave ever seen.
It is definitely in the same class as the Exorcist, and that was my top pick for may years until I saw Ju-On.
The Best way to watch this film is with the lights out and comepletely alone. It is also the worst way to watch it, because alone is what you definitely and desperately will NOT want to be when it is over.
You can find out more about the film by Going here:
http://www.juonthegrudge.com/
There is also an American Remake Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, and the trailer for that is Here:
http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/thegrudge/
I won't bother to go into too much detail about the film, because you should really Google and find out for yourself. It's a fascinating journey, and if you are a horror fan, you should take it.
Is there a film that has scared me more than Ju-On?
Indeed there is.....
Ju-On: The Grudge 2.
http://www.asiandb.com/data/stream.pfm?file=mms://vod.hani.co.kr/cine21/multi/trailer/i-j/juon2_1m.asf
But THAT is another Story. :)
Why do I get the feeling their gonna ruin another classic by making a really bad prequel/sequel.....
They already have they made exorcist 2,3 and 4 in the 80s but did horrible.
