As a rule I find the key question is, would you have bought the item in question if you hadn't downloaded it?
If the answer is no, then generally I don't have a problem downloading it, as I'm certainly not stealing any money out of the producer's pockets as i would have put none in there anyway.
If however, you would have bought it, this starts to get into grey areas - some could argue especially for software you're only paying for 0s and 1s put in a different order, but then, as I feel some software developers/games makers/bands deserve some sort of financial reward for producing something that you are so keen on.

Well, this discussion regarding piracy, existed when the videotape and cassetrecorder came out to. Nowadays almost nobody (not even the anti-piracy activists) are against recording movies from TV or music to a videotape-recorder (well, noones doing that anymore I suppose...:)). And imo downloading from the net isnīt far from this, although the speed at which you can copy something has increased. And I do think there is no stopping this development at the moment, so the only thing is for companies to jump on the bandwagon and find a sollution to it... and I believe it could be done...

If you are interested about this stuff, I recommened you read the links by Orson Scott Card about his views on file sharing and why the music industry is really failing in sales.

Basically piracy is only bad when it is reducing sales for the company. In other words, if someone who actually -would- have paid money for that song chose to download it instead, that has a negative impact on the company/artist and is effectively, "stealing."
However, then you have people such as students who dont have money anyway. They probably have 20-50gigs of mp3s. Youre talking thousands upon thousands of dollars of music or movies. Realistically, most students would not be making those purchases. After their first 2-4 cds of music and dvd or two that they download instead of buy, everything else is rather "innocent" being that they would probably not have actually purchased it to begin with. Then you have people who actually do go buy a few cds and dvds and are no longer willing to pay more for the time being, and start downloading. This would be totally "innocent" because it has not created an actual loss, because the sale would not have been made.
Likewise, a student is far more likely to go see a live performance. This helps the artists the most anyway. Having been exposed to their music probably influenced their decision to see them live, be it through cd purchases or mp3 downloading.

He has some very valid points. You'd think anything that needs 2 parts is a long read, and it was. But I agree with him, for the most part.
Sueing people isn't the way to stop file sharring. Record companies and the RIAA havent discovered this fact yet. Maybe someday they will. {wishful thinking}
