The 20th century had a shitload of inventions, or at least huge leaps in the use of such inventions: car, plane, a-bomb, military technology, television, computer, you name it. What do you think the 21st century will bring to the American economy and way of life?

HDTV, DVR, TiVO, and anything else that suggests that you spend the rest of your life on the couch.

Then here's an idea: virtual school. You would have to go, there'd be attendance and stuff (and ways to prevent cheating, like you have a program that always says you're there and you're not, well we'd find something to prevent that), and you never have to leave home. Like virtual reality only except you do school stuff. Never leave your bed if you don't wanna. By the way chris, congrats on 3,000 posts I hadn't noticed til now.

thanks.....i've been here a while. at first this place was just a way to pass the time at work, but now it's interesting to keep up with.

back on topic- vr school would totally kill social interaction. we would be raising a bunch of dweebs and assholes.
i think it will be interesting to see what will come out of my life time, but i really don't see any ground breaking inventions coming to light.

damn it never thought of that. yea it would suck like that you're right. i dunno, i always wanted a little palm pilot kinda thing just for the short movies i download from places like here and other sites. maybe i could make one of those, just to carry around and show off little clips to friends and stuff.

On the topic of VR school:

I think text books should be done away with and just put flat panel monitors in the desk. That way you could teach with visual aides. We live in a media driven world, so we might as well use it for something good, like education.

As for the rest of the inventing world, chris is right, Big Business wants to keep us on the couch, wasting our lives watching life on a TV screen.

i heard of scientists working on something to do with DNA or RNA where they can pre-program a person with knoledge. i think if this is perfected then it might make school obsolete. if anyone else has heard anymore on this please let me know, i find it really interesting.

bullshit...you cannot pre-program knowledge...they might be able to genetically engineer a super human, but that sounds a little like nazi germany to me...

sorry if i implied that they could do it, i meant they are working on steps to someday get to it.

i wasn't calling your bull shit, i was saying that it *was* bullshit. everyone here knows that it is VERY possible to repeat our history. i admit i was against human cloning 51%, but i do fear that selective breeding is a major possibility in the future.

The web will dominate our way of life, VR will be the acess medium for the web. Every item we own will be connected to everything else, shirts that detect high bloodpressure and skin cancers, nano-technology robots that will cut your hair at predertmined intervals, etc.

Selective breeding will happen, with good and bad consequences. disease should be essentialy wiped out by the end of the 21st century, either genetically engineered or tiny robitic insects will keep our super crops free of pests. Or maybe the corn itself will eat silkworms......

I can see humans being modified to work in extreme enviornments, deep space etc, (places where robots cannot be trusted/work correctly) cyborgs might be a reality, but it would be easier to tell your arm to grow back instead of using a mechanical arm.

The gap betweent the industrialized nations and the third world countries will be even larger.

blah blah, etc. yadda yadda, all assuming the matrix isn't supposed to reset yet :p
