The film has 2 endings and it's up to you to pick one.
1. Everything that happened was real and paralell universe / time travel was what it was all about.
2. The whole film was made through the eyes a paranoid schitso (donny) and non of what you saw actually happened, it only happened in his head.

The "storm" that came occured when Frank said it would: 28 days after the jet engine hit Donnie's house. The plane that Samantha and Rose were in launched the reversal of time (recall the conversation that Donnie had with the teacher, about the metalic object passing through the "wormhole"--the funnel). Time reversed itself back to when the engine crashed into Donnie's house, and since Frank didn't wake Donnie up, he was still in bed when it hit and died.
The montage at the end with all the supporting cast represents that they somehow know something is wrong: the therapist wake up troubled, if I'm not mistaken Kitty Farmer looks troubled, Jim Cunningham is crying (probably out of guilt for his actions-- the kiddy porn thing), etc.

Its quite easy to understand in the end, basiclly Time was corrupted when the Jet Engine was sent back from the future meaning a tangent universe was created and causing the world to end. Because Donnie was closed to the engine it was his quest to send the engine back to the old universe to save the world. Frank and his girlfriend die in the new universe meaning they are 'mainipulated dead' and could help Donnie correct the time corruption as they were 'ghosts' if you will.Donnie didn't have to die, but laughs because he enlighten and knew he was going onto a better place.

Although that last post was quite true, the director gives you two options... Either donnie wakes up as all the other characters do, thinking he's had a dream, and he's happy it's over (hense the laughing) then goes back to sleep... or is ready to die because of the enlightenment.
There is so much info about the movie, and being an occult film, very much secret information to find out. Things like:
Frank is Donnie's sister's boyfriend
Donnie's pills are placebo's
The Philosophy of Time Travel (you can read pages from it that explain what's really happening to Donnie)
What happens after the movie: Jim Cunningham kills himself for example
When Frank drops off Donnie's sister at the end of the movie, he honks a billion times to warn donnie, but donnie either doesnt hear, or chooses not to get up. (The first time Frank drops her off, he honks about 3 or 4 times only.)
The man in the red jogging suit, is actually an FAA agent following Donnie
An earlier post gave a good site to go to, to find out more good information so i suggest you use it.

I thought this wass one of the best movies ive ever seen. Its a stinker! I have watched it about 4 times now and a couple with the commentary. The directors cut dvd of it is now comin out and im gona have to buy that. anyways its kinda complicated. Think of it this way if it makes sense.
Everything you were seeing was a parallel universe (after the plane landed in the house) (until both parallesl universes met) Everything was being controled by frank (funny bunny). Everything was being created as an altered image in his brain. he was being told to do all this stuff threw frank. the countdown on his arm was the countdown until the two universes met together and formed one which was time travel. It was more or less a movie about the meeting of universes to create dreamland and time travel backwards to reality. You could do one thing in dream land and then when it all came together time would go backwards and form reality but with some knowledge of what happened in dreamland. WOW i dont make much sense but scrambled eggs are still eggs. Hopefully it helped but im not too good at explaining!

This movie is second on my list. I agree its not the funniest movie out there(KUNG POW) but the whole movie is great especially if you just let your mind roam about what happend in the movie instead of wanting the real answers. but uh has anyseen it trippd out? It was quite an experience for me...you? :)

Just watched it. The fat smoking jogger, anybody notice he shows up more than once, is he an observer aware of the tangent universe?
I notice it came out in 2001, my question is did it come out before Sept 11 2001 or after? I ask this because remember all the hysteria sorounding any story line that had planes crashing just after Sept 11? This could explain why it didn't do well at the box office since the distrubutors of the film may not of felt it appropriate to promote a movie with a plane engine crashing into a house.

"Darko" grossed just $515,545 at the domestic box office but has since gained a following on DVD, where it has grossed more than $10 million domestically."

It did come out after September 11th..it was released October 21st 2001 therefore I personally think it was the crisis that brought down the profit they made. It seems pretty obvious because look at how big of a hit it is now.
