I love these huge events. Here's hoping for more than 11 Golds for Britain this year.
Update: That was a very impressive opening ceremony. On par with Sydney I'd say.
Final Medal Tally:
1st United States - 35 Gold, 39 Silver, 29 Bronze
2nd China - 32 Gold, 17 Silver, 14 Bronze
3rd Russia - 27 Gold, 27 Silver, 38 Bronze
4th Australia - 17 Gold, 16 Silver, 16 Bronze
5th Japan - 16 Gold, 9 Silver, 12 Bronze
10th Great Britain - 9 Gold, 9 Silver, 12 Bronze
21st Canada - 3 Gold, 6 Silver, 3 Bronze

Impressive intro!
I'm glad the intro didn't get terrorised.
Did u hear the cheer and applause the afgans got??? I was expecting boo's from all over the stadium! (maybe a ploy for us to get the afgans sympathy)
Who cares...WICKED intro!
Let's hope the rest of the games go ahead untouched.
I must have missed the opening, what time was it on? NBC right??

Although i find the opening ceremonies a little to artsy for me, i still enjoyed it and was impressed compared to the previous olympics that i have seen
I thought it was quite impressive and very well planned

I thought a few of the things where a little weird like the body painting and stuff. But I loved it. I like how people where able to cheer for iraq and to see the smiling faces on them, it seemed the cheer was pretty loud for Iraq also. It makes me want to give everyone a hug. I love you guys so no matter what you think someone out there loves you.

Being an American I was suprised of the cheers we recieved. Our politics aren't the most accepted in Greece, but fortunatly they were able to put that aside. Unlike the dumbass Muslim who withdrew from the Olympics just because he would have had to wrestle an Isreali.

They really want to get in this race, one of the guys was crying and said this was his last olympics and his dreams were ruined. In my opinon the Olympics arnt as great as there made out to be. Most of the sports are ones that no one even watches/cares about untill the Olymipics come along, but it is cool how all the countries come together and play each other.
IMO Hamm shouldn't have won the gold. Now before some bitch accuses me of hating America consider this:
The man fell off the mat after that vault and even had to be helped up by a judge. Yet he still got a 9.1 when he should have received a score in the 8's. Meanwhile, the Chinese gymnist missed the bar with one hand on the high bar (he didn't fall) and got an 8.9 when he should have gotten a low 9. Also, the judges messed up when scoring his other two events...which were awesome and almost perfect. However the Koreans were almost perfect too and the Korean who finished second should have won. Hamm should have gotten bronze at most.

Ok i have been in this sport for 10 years and i know that the scoring is a little confusing and vault is completely different from every event. on every event except vault there are skill groups A, B, C, D, E , and super E. on vault each skill is just givin a point value. Paul does a Kazamatsu (sp) with 2 and a half twists. I am pretty sure that is worth a 9.8-10.0. Now he took about 4 steps sideways and fell over and the most u can take off on 1 skill/fall is 5 tenths so he got that off forsure. puts him at about a 9.3 (going from a 9.8) plus maybe a knee bend or missed toe point puts him at the 9.1.
then on the other events you talk about the koreans being near perfect. well that is true but i think they had a slip up on parallel bars if i rememeber right. Plus their start values are low. (start value is all the skills in your routine and what they are worth added together) they do not do very big skills.
what really brought paul back was highbar. with the 3 tekachevs (the release skills) all worth D's plus connection bonus he gets about 5 tenths back and that bumps up his start value. also paul was perfect of parallel bars and highbar sticking each dismount perfectly. not to mention that his dismount on highbar also gets him like 2 thenths back.
also, the chinese gymnast that missed his hand - missing your hand on a skill and completely falling off r the same thing in this sport. no matter what he got docked 5 tenths for that and is considered a fall. plus he did one release with not that much connection bonus bringing down his start value.
let me know if i need to clerify anything its kind of confusing.

Just a note on Hamm, and all this controversy about the judges, giving up his medal, sharing a gold, etc.... An article for those interested:
Despite judging error, Hamm's gold medal shows no tarnish
Posted: Monday August 23, 2004 6:55AM; Updated: Monday August 23, 2004 10:13AM
Paul Hamm fought back to defeat Kim Dae-eun (left) and and Yang Tae-young in the all-around competition.
AP
Let me be clear here, since some self-righteous columnists who wouldn't know a handstand from a night stand have entered the fray: Paul Hamm should not give up his gold medal.
Nor is his gold medal tarnished, as the headline writers have suggested. Nor should a second gold medal in the men's all-around competition be awarded to South Korea's unfortunate Yang Tae Young. This is not another Skategate, where judges in the pairs competition in Salt Lake were caught colluding. It's time for the media to back off.
Here's what happened -- and I warn you in advance, it's not easy to follow. Yang did his parallel bars routine, and was scored a 9.712 -- a pretty good score. To put it in perspective, in the team finals two nights earlier, he had a 9.687 on the same apparatus with a similar routine.
The two judges in charge of assigning start values for parallel bars in the all-around, Spain's Benjamin Bango and Colombia's Oscar Buitrago Reyes, decided Yang's start value was 9.9. The head judge on the parallel bars, George Beckstead, didn't overrule them.
It was these three judges who eventually were suspended by the International Gymnastics Federation when, after studying the videotape, it was determined the start value for Yang should have been 10.0, as it had been in the team competition finals. Had it been, Yang would have scored 9.812 on the apparatus, and his total would have been .10 higher heading into his final event, the high bars.
That is not to say Yang would have finished .10 higher at the end of the night, which some are suggesting. Gymnasts don't operate in a vacuum, nor do judges score in a vacuum.
Everyone knows exactly where they stand relative to the other competitors. Yang might have relaxed with the bigger lead; he might have become uptight and choked; or he might have been perfectly brilliant. We will never know. But it's fair to say his mental outlook would have been altered.
Judges, too, might have scored his high-bar routine differently had he been further ahead than he was at the time. It's not the way it's supposed to work, but judges are human. They have their favorites. That's why the FIG rules state that any protest must be filed before the end of a rotation -- in this case, the parallel bars -- which the Koreans failed to do.
A couple of points: a 9.9 start value is not unusual. The night of the all-around competition, Yang also had a 9.9 start value on his vault, and -- even lower -- a 9.8 start value on his high bar routine.
What's in a score?
How gymnastics scores are determined:
-- Gymnasts and coaches assemble routines after consulting the Code of Points, an extensive guide to the difficulty value assigned to every move and combination of moves.
-- In competition, there are eight judges for each event and a chief who oversees them.
-- The two-judge "A" Panel establishes the "start value," representing the maximum score the routine can earn. Most top gymnasts perform routines with start values between 9.7 and 10.
-- The six-judge "B" Panel evaluates the routine for execution faults, rhythm, presentation and artistry. Each judge takes deductions from the start value to determine a score.
-- The high and low scores from the "B" Panel are thrown out and the remaining scores are averaged for one final score.
The Associated Press
Disputes over start values occur all the time. Blaine Wilson of the U.S. was furious after the preliminaries of the team competition because the start values for him and two of his teammates had been lowered in the high-bar rotation. In this case, the disagreement was magnified because a gold medal hung in the balance.
The two judges charged with determining a start value must do so in real time, and they make their assessment on the basis of what the gymnast actually does: difficulty of elements, grip changes, releases and positions, to name a few. Not what's planned on paper.
It's incredibly complicated stuff. The head judge, in this case Beckstead, a veteran official from Los Angeles, generally only weighs in if there's a disagreement between the two officials assigning the start value. In the case of Yang, there was no disagreement.
Was a mistake made? Yes, they admitted as much. Did it decide the competition? Well, it affected it, no question. But it is flatly untrue to say if they'd had the start value correct at 10.0, then Yang would have won.
Was there corruption or collaboration on the part of the judges? No one has even suggested as much. As long as a sport is judged, subjectivity will play a role, and there will be accusations of bias. All gymnasts know this.
All gymnasts have suffered from bias, and sometimes, whether they admit it or not, have benefited from bias. It's part of gymnastics. Heck, it's part of all sport. It's the human element that gives athletics their great, universal appeal.
So why not a second gold medal? Why not accommodate the upset Koreans and send everyone home happy? Well for one thing, you can make a pretty good case that, if you're going to go to the videotape, Yang shouldn't have won.
Yes, the videotape of the parallel bars showed the judges erred by assigning a 9.9 start value. But it showed something else, too. In the course of his routine, Yang had four holds on the bar, when the rules allow for a maximum of three. The deduction for that mistake? Two-tenths of a point.
The judges missed it.
It is not enough to say Paul Hamm should keep his gold medal. He's a deserving champion. Period.

And a silver for Canada in diving. Peditra Felicien (sp?) the hurdler was a huge favourite and FELL on her first hurdle. I'm pissed, our baseball team lost too but we're going for a bronze tomorrow.
I'm not pissed that was a great game, 11 more inches and it would have been tied. That's a close one.

yeah but I think in 84 (LA) Canada took 44 medals in the summer games.
Our team is about 40 athletes smaller this year.

Yea when Felicien fell over the first hurdle it was horrible. She also knocked over some other runner so it must have been worse for her. She grew up about 10-15 minutes away from where i live so it sucks when you see a hometown athlete blow their chances of a gold medal like that.

cant find a link, but the international gymnastics federation asked paul hamm to give back his gold medal. fuck, seriously why cant they let this go? they already went against the rules and reveiwed the tape efter the fact. while reviewing the tape they noticed that the korean gymnast had one more hold then he is allowed (2 tenths off) that the judges missed so either way paul wins end of story. if i were paul i would say hell no!

I think it would be a great idea if the made more medal standings. There are more countries competing now than when they first began so it makes sense.
medals could go:
gold
silver
bronze
nickel
tin
That way we in Canada could have more medals :p

So if ther is a 8 man race, over 1/2 would get a medal? That is quite lame.
Also, get some other metal...nickel, tin??

Well how i can trust you Canadians!? Always popping in and out.
Listen up all you Canadiarns out there, if you make a joke do what all canadians do: put "ay" at the end of your comment. Eh is not ay, why do people say "eh"??? Eh is e-h, where the hell do people get the A from the EH.
China's doing awesome these days. The only Chinese guy in track won the gold in the 110 m hurdles, the only Chinese girl in track won the gold in the 10,000 m, and the women's volleyball team beat Russia. Cool stuff

Canadians say "eh" in the exact same scenerios that Americans would find themselves saying "huh". There is absolutely no difference. So you Americans inquiring about this: use some introspection to explain why you say "huh" and there's your answer. It's just used in place of "you know?" or "right?"
Examples:
"This computer is pretty shiny, right?"
"This computer is pretty shiny, eh?"
"This computer is pretty shiny, huh?"
"The sky is blue, you know?"
"The sky is blue, eh?"
"The sky is blue, huh?"
Also "Eh" can also often be used in place of the traditional American "y'all" and "y'hear":
"You come back real soon, y'all"
"You come back real soon, y'hear?"
"You come back real soon, eh?"
I can also say " I think POOP overanalyzes linguistics to much, eh?" :D

They say he had a sign on his back which read... "Isreal to fulfill the prophecy" or something of that sort.
And the Brazilian runner he said he wouldn't have been able to finish in first anyways... he is quite satisfied with bronze.
EDIT: EXACT words of his sign: Isreal is the fulfilment of the prophecy. The Bible is True. The man who did it is an Irishman who has a history of interupting races for Biblical purposes.
