Broke a string on your bass....wow.
I've been playing bass for six years and i have never broken a string.
Check your bridge, some cheap bridges wear down and get little indents and such that will cut the string after a while. If you find anything like that, get the highest grit sand paper you can find (above 200 would be good) and sand out the little bastards.

I had shitty ass strings, and in the last week i had downtuned about 50 times and had been fastpicking.

You apparently don't rock hard enough. hahaha. When I first started playing bass i used a pretty thin pick, like .50 mm and I actually broke strings all the time. I'm pretty sure it's cause I would hit it with my thumb on a downstroke and they would unwind. But after a few years, I hardly ever break strings. But I also replace them before every show I play. Last time I broke one was like 3 or 4 month ago when my band was practicing. Pissed me off....

yea. but luckily i have a guitar shop like right down the street from me. so i just walked there and had them but a new string on and tune it. and the guy told me how to tune it with a bass tuner. so it kinda ended up bein a good experience afterall

I play slap bass so I'm sure I rock hard enough, harder than you will ever be able to using a pick.... though I do use Elixer strings, best stuff...expensive though, the ones I have on my bass now were $100+

Here's an idea..since u didn't know bass gauges... don't fast pick... use ur hands its more of a drum than a guitar anyways... man...don't anyone know that...

just do triplets by using your three middle fingers. I can pick with my fingers about as fast as i can using a pick. Just watch steve harris from Maiden
