How many times has it happened to you? And let's hear your stories.

It happened to me once. I was a bit of a jerk to my 360, leaving it on to download things, standing it upright on the rug, playing Halo and Guitar Hero to absolutely no end...but it was an Elite, so I figured it wouldn't happen to me. A friend was over and I was ejecting the Rock Band disc to put in a movie, and that's when it happened.

I sent it right back to Best Buy that very same day, they were extremely nice about it and even gave me a free headset (my old one had broken.) Had it up and running later that night, and I didn't really even lose that much because my important stuff (the Acheivements, my Halo 3/COD4 rank) was all recovered due to Xbaqs live. The only thing I lost were my guitar hero scores, most of which I had on scorehero.com anyway.

Let's hear them stories! By the way I'm scraping up all my money for a PS3, I hope to be in a good enough monetary condition that I can buy one at the end of the month. I will then own all three consoles.

I have a Xbox Elite built in Oct. 2007 (I have a 65nm Falcon system) and no problems at all. I am planning to order a cooler though soon.

So no RRoD story...but I figured I would offer a ray of hope from my 360

Got my first 360 Premium May of 07, by December the disk drive had crapped out and wouldn't read disks. I sent it in, got a new one roughly 3 weeks later. I didn't play it as much, a few runs through Rock Band every now and then, so I didn't even think twice about a RROD. One day in March I go to put in Mass Effect, and BAM, 3 rings of death. I died a little on the inside.

Since then i've gotten it repaired, and the one I have now works fine so far. Lets hope it doesn't bust in the end :/

Tough call. If you set it upright, it RRoDs and if you set it sideways, it scratches the disks.

I set mine upright. I set it sideways once, put Rock Band in there for about five seconds, and it never worked again.

I've always had mine laying flat.

It doesn't scratch the disc unless you move it from sideways to upright, atleast for me.

I love how people still don't understand how the 360's brick.

If you play your 360 for hours and hours, or leave it on to download etc etc you won't brick your 360. You might overheat it but thats a different thing altogether. Same with the orientation you have your Xbox in, that won't make any difference, but leaving it upright can create the risk of scratching your disk.

Mine has been fine since the day i bought, not even crashed, its about 2 years old i think now and i have played it to hell in the past. Its on a glass shelf with the extra add on fan you can buy to clip on the back, seems to do the trick.

I put mine vertical. The bottom of the 360 gets really hot, and as long as you don't move the 360 when it's on it shouldn't have a problem. However, you can always put your 360 horizontal and on a chassi

Anyways when I first got my 360 it froze on the 3rd day. I was playing GTA4 and because it was horizontal, the heat under the 360 built up and I guess fried it. At first it froze once, I was like "no biggie, games always freeze". So I reset the 360 and tried again, froze after 10 min. Reset, froze before I exit the safehouse. Reset, froze during loading. Reset, froze on dashboard. Reset, froze on spinning xball.

I called M$ for my coffin. After a bit of investigation, I felt under the 360 (and on the table, where the 360 was sitting on) and there was a lot of heat. I guess that was the problem, because my friends who have 360s put their vertical and have never had a problem. One had a 360 from launch that never failed on him.

Day 1- Called M$ for coffin
Day 2- Nothing
Day 3- got coffin, packed up the 360 and sent it out
Day 4- The tech support gets my 360, they replaced it
Day 5- Sent it out to me
Day 6- Got my new 360

the new one works like a charm, nothing is wrong with it, had it for 1 month. I also put the power brick on my old mousetrap car chassis, because there was some heat buildup there too.

That god I didn't buy a PS3, or else I would have had to pay $150 for blu ray drive repairs.

I don't think the blu ray drive craps out that often. And you have a free one year warranty with PS3. I mean, I'd rather have something that plays games and high def movies than just games.

Got mine a few months ago. Me and my brother said fuck it and didn't bother sending it in. Then I thought, meh, I might as well.

Thursday night, I left and pretty much was gone from home the whole weekend. I came home yesterday and noticed that my 360 was on. I know it wasn't me, because I always use the controller to shut off the 360. I think a cousin came over and my parents ok'd them to play the 360. Tard never shut it off. It might have been on for 2 days straight... I didn't get the RRoD (again) though.

I had mine for about a year and it happened so I did the towel trick and it worked until I got the coffin. I sent it in and they sent it back saying that they wouldn't fix it because I voided the warranty by doing the towel trick ( I don't know how they could tell). So they sent it back and the faceplate was busted so I went out and bought a PS3. Fuck you microsoft.

Can someone explayin what the hell is up with x-box breakages. Its like every week i hear someone has RROD or has a fucked up console. And why can't you put your console upright or sideways? I seriously think that its stupid to buy one if i can't do anything to it without it braking

Well the orientation you have your Xbox in doesn't make any difference, you might run the risk of overheating it a little more with it verticle.

The main problem with the 360's is tbh all the EU's fault. With their aggressive anti-lead campaigns and policies the electronic industry has had to change one of their most important components, solder. The old solder composition contained lead, which helped drop the melting level. Now with the old solder been outlawed, they have had to move onto using a different solder, a solder which doesn't use lead and has a higher melting point.

Now push forward to after the creation of the 360's, a company that specialises in repairing the 360 has done its own independant invesigation into the abnormally high failure rate. They found that the main component chips (CPU, GPU, Memory etc) have been soldered on to the motherboard wrong. It seems whoever is building the 360's hasn't calibrated their machines to well to handle the soldering, leaving weak soldering bonds all accross the 360.

Now just run a little thermal shock (ie heat up then cool, then heat up then cool ie turn 360 on, off, on, off) over your motherboard and all those weak soldered bonds start to crack ... suddenly the GPU is missing a communication port ... thats a hardware failure, 3 red rings.

Why does the towel trick work? Well you cook your 360 enough you might soften the solder just enough to close the cracks, but don't expect it to be a decent fix.

Here is my epic tale of all 6 of my Xbox 360 consoles. None of them were ever on a carpet, but on a clean, dust-free desk with the power supply brick as far away as the cable allows, in a well ventilated room.

First 360 - Worked for 5 days, woke up on the 6th day, turned it on to play Gears, red rings. Took it back to store and got a replacement

Second 360 - Worked for around 6 months, got home from work, went to play some Saints Row, red rings. Called Microsoft in the morning and sent it off, got it back 3 weeks later

Third 360 - Got it back as mentioned above, was a different console, I assume it was a refurb because it had a different serial number than the one I sent them and had scuffs in different places. Worked for about a month, then the screen started going bright green and making a horrific screeching sound, it eventually stopped loading up the dashboard. Sent it in and got it back 2 weeks later

Fourth 360 - Got it back from Microsoft as mentioned above, took it out of the coffin, set it up, turned it on, red rings. Went apeshit. Called Microsoft, they picked it up the next day, got it back 2 weeks later with a free controller because they've fucked me over so much.

Fifth 360 - Worked for a good few months with no issues, froze whilst loading a Halo 3 level, I turned it off then back on, red rings, sent it back.

Sixth and current 360 - Been working OK since March, I rarely play it now that I have a PS3.

I'm still on 360 numero uno. I even bought it one month after launch...
I haven't had a single problem with my xbox, I've left it on for four days straight once and it still played fine. And I left it on all day every day for about 2 months just idling on FFXI. My 360 is the jesus of 360s.

I have a release day 360 and have never experienced the RROD. Ive had it freeze up once the entire time Ive had it.
As long as I've had it, its always bin upright with plenty of airflow around it.

Yeah, but I think most people use the towel trick to damage their 360's.

What? The towel trick basically gets the inside of the 360 really hot so the solder will reconnect the parts. It will get the 360 working for maybe a day or 2 but will ultimately RROD again.

Because the fan's are on your 360 for a reason? huh?

Of course the towel trick will fuck up your Xbox 360, however it can in the short run help fix the rrod.
