Well it's impossible to explain the scary factor of it, just watch the movie that's all I can say. You won't be disapointed, and if you are, then maybe somebody will give you your money back.

I have to agree. I think the movie is over-rated and is not scary. It's okay, but it's not that great.
I think people in the 70's were scared of it because it was the very first movie to deal with Satan.
Poeple today just say it is scary because they are brain-washed followers and will love any move "they" tell them to love and hate any movie "they" tell them too.
"They" are the same ones who told us about the Y2K problem and a bunch of other crap....
I am still trying to figure out who "they" is....
EDIT: Whoever bad reped me, I liked AVP for the action and because I have been waiting 14 years just to see those two creatures on the screen together. I viewed it as an action flick. Not horror.

No actually I went into the Exorcist thinking I was going to laugh at it and see how crappy it was, but then I became scared afterwards and it was pretty bad at times. I wasn't really scared of actually being possessed, but I had a stupid fear that the possessed girl would be in a room in my house and like kill me or something, it was quite a stupid fear, but it still scared the crap out of me. Although I was quite a bit younger then, so I dunno if I would be scared that much if I saw it for the first time today, I know I'd still be somewhat scared.

the Exorcist is scary for 3 reasons,
one: probably the most on the nose reson is because of the manifestation of evil, and how it can take control and corrupt the innocent.
two: the abandonment of god, it that the preist who has lost all faith and suffers from the torment of his mothers death. the movie says that in the absence of god and light, evil takes hold. probably the most scary thing about the movie is how god can seem compleatly absent in the face of pure evil
three: possetion and captivity, best exampled in the scene were "help Me" appears in the possed ragen's skin, this is horrific cus anyone. even a normal, helpless child can be taken over by a force of pure moleveolence, and everyone around her is helpless to save her from the torment. it's only with the preiests ultimite sacrafise, and his compleate trust in god does he save her life.
also her head spins and she does freaky shit. plus the kind of foul languege used in the movie, although heard in every movie and tv show today was a pretty shocking thing in the early seventies.

I don't know if any of you guys know this, but there are also numerous subliminal (did i spell that right? oh well) images located throughout the film, some including warped and twisted depictions of Reagans head. Another reason the film was scary was that there were reports that the set itself had to be exorcised after filming, not to mention the numerous people that were killed during the production. The vulgar and rude depictions of sexual acts were new ground for the film industry, and are now standard fare for any B - rated teen horror movie (Or any movie for that matter).

I just saw this film last night and thought it was about average. My friends (who had already seen it opening night) told me that I will be really scared at some parts - but I wasn't (because I watch alot of those types of movies so I guess I'm immune from it to a certain degree). It really depends person to person. If you scare easily in horor films, than you will most likely get scared watching this one as well.
