damn, this really pisses me off. yesterday I was just driving to work when this idiotic bitch ran me off the road. when I caught up to her.. i saw that she was using a fucking cell phone. because I was in a pissy mood.. I honked the shit outa her for 5 fucking miles until I had to take an exit..
so heres the question.. should we pass a law that BANS using cell phones while operating a vehicle on public highways?
heres a poll

We already have a law like that in Britain, I believe.

It would probably be safer, but it would be completely impractical for out times. Many people do alot of things with/on their cell phones. Anything from work to making weekend reservations to where ever. If someone recieved an important call while driving, you would expect them to pull over to answer it? Ok, that's the safest solution. But what if that person, instead of pulling over X miles from his/her exit, decides to floor it to get to the exit? Now, instead of possible swerving and loss of concentration, we have a person going increasingly fast, ducking in and out of traffic just to get to the exit so s/he can answer the phone.
It might work, but I dont think it would.

If the call is that important then they can damn well invest in a hands free kit rather than put peoples lives at risk.
Viceroy is correct, it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving over here and quite rightly so- many accidents have been caused by idiots on phones. The law we have over here works absolutely fine and I'm sure it has saved lives.

whoever made that law is a retard, its not holding the cell phone that causes accidents, its talking on the phone which causes it

I think that if you cause an accident while using a cell phone you should get an extra fine. But no, dont outlaw them. I can drive just fine with my cell phone.

You've never driven while talking on a cell phone have you? In fact it is much safer to use a hands free system than it is to just use the phone, if you have both hands on the steering wheel or whatnot and your eyes on the road, you'd obviously have to be a retard to not be able to drive while talking. You can have a conversation in the car while driving so it would be the same thing with a cell phone.

Yes beacuse it would make everyone safer but no also beacuse what if you are waitin for an important phone call beacuse some one is dying in your family so yes and no I would say! :)

Its much safer to just know how to drive well. Driving with one hand or knees is not hard.
I can drive my manual transmission with my legs only. Steering, gas, shifting, braking.
I just suggest that if you cant drive your car well or lack confidence.... dont use the phone.
Heck, I believe that there should be a special license for people with exceptional driving ability that allows them to speed 20 miles or so in nonresidential areas with an approved safe car.

Exactly, but i think the people that can't drive well or lack confidence either need their own road lined with tires and matresses or shouldn't be able to drive at all.

Definetly. Cell phones should not be used while you are trying to drive. Many accidents would be avoided if they werent allowed. I always seem to see people talking on them in parking lots, which are probaly the most dangerous place when driving. A cell phone takes away their attention which makes it even worse.

the law over here in britain is quite simple you cannot even be seen to be holding your phone when you are driving your vehicle regardless of whether you are using it to phone someone or just moving it out of the way, even when traffic lights are at red, for all that a hands free kit costs u should buy one if your going to use it while driving, think of how you would feel if something happened to you or your family if a car driven by someone on the phone hit your car or worse,. maybe the car manufacturers could be lobbied to start putting them as standard into cars that way all u need to do is get an adaptor if required and plug it in
here i the netherlands we also have a law about it it's illegal now you have to own a car-kit

At the least, holding a cell phone while driving should be outlawed. Although not impossible, it is severely limiting to only have the ability to use one hand.

they shudnt ban them. i can drive just fine while using mine. i agree with shade if you cause and accident while using a cell phone you should get fined extra.

i would settle for a good car phone. they are fastened near the floor and all you gotta do is press send to answer a call, and its like using the intercom feature on your house phone so you dont have to hold anything.

I read a study that indicated that the biggest problem with using cell phones is not that a hand needs to hold it...it is that the mind is distracted from the task of driving. A phone conversation is different than conversing with a passenger in the car, for instance. On the phone, you are more attentive to the caller.
I believe that some people can still drive very safely while on the phone...but that there are some that can not.
As far as outlawing cell phones, it does seem quite impractical given how often they are used. There would be a lot of resistance as well...I'm not sure which politicians would put their necks out on the line for this.
As far as I'm concerened, cell phones should remain available for use at any time while driving...but perhaps penalties for any moving violation from forgetting a turn signal or speeding or reckless driving to an at fault accident should be drastically increased if it is determined that the offending driver was on a cell phone when it occured.
In this way, perhaps the law would be able to punish those who really do drive worse when distracted by a cell phone conversation.

It's outlawed here, just like basically everything else, and is just an inconvenience. If they are suddenly afraid of people talking on cell phones, I question why they still permit eating, drinking, changing the radio, or any of the array of other activities motorists can do while driving.

youd drop your doughnut. and probably wouldnt give a shit if you killed the child anyway. your a selfish type of driver who always 'knows best' until you kill a family of 5

Under the Motor Vehicle Act here it they are chargeable offences if you are involved in a care accident. The Charge is Driving with Undo Care and Attention.

lucky that you can still use the internet ;)
or are you breaking a law :D :D :D

Overall I think it would be safer if they were outlawed. I mean, what news is so important that it is worth endangering both your life and someone elses. Even if it's your grandma dying or something, it would have happenned anyway, and it won't kill you to pull over and find out 20 seconds later. Even for the people who say they are perfect at driving while using cell phones, would you bet your life and someone else's on that?

Yes, cell phones are like driving drunk. Your concentration is not on driving and you are a hazard to anyone else on the road.
I hate cell phones even though I have one. We will all be eating lunch and someone beeps, everyone looks at their phone. Have you people ever noticed that? People are beeping and ringing all over the place and everyone has to look to see where it's coming from. It is stupid as hell.
I will pull over a bitch that is talking on her cell phone and driving under the speed limit. It never seems to happen with guys much, they drive like a madman no matter what. Girls get all tied up over their conversations. If my cell phone rings, I will pull over to talk.

Wouldn't it be wierd if you were talking on the phone to a person who was driving and using a cell phone, and they got into an accident? That'd be wierd to hear, kinda like "SCREECH, BOOM!" and you'd hear all this glass shattering and shit. I'd be freaked out...If u drive an auto tranny, u should be able to use a cellphone, cuz u got the one hand free. If u drive a manual tranny, then no, u shouldnt use a cellphone cuz u need both hands. I know many might argue "but we can hold it between our cheek and shoulder!" and then I'll say "when u hold it like that, the chances of u dropping the phone, reaching down to get it, and causing an accident are much higher."
I'd say that either ban cell phone usage or require a hands-free set. I don't know how many times I've had idiots drift over into my lane, completely ignore a traffic light, etc. because they were yapping on the damn phone. Hell I saw this one TOTALLY ignorant prick ignore the fact that there were 2 cops behind him with their lights on trying to get past cuz he was talking on his phone. I saw a back up officer pull him over too-the guy even had the nerve to have a "What did I do??" look on his face (while still appearing to be using the phone too!)
Grrrr, it's ticking me off just thinking about it. I swear, one of these days I'm going to put the brush bar on the front of my Explorer to some good use, cuz really if you can't handle driving while using a phone, you should do everyone a favor and get off the freakin' road!!!
Dang it, now I'm all mad...haha.
