View Full Version : Resident Evil has gotten worse and worse. And now it sucks.

Lets take a good look at this series.
RE1: Great game. Scary as hell. Shocked the shit out of everyone. It had a very scary setting too; a huge mansion. The whole time you're thinking "oh fuck oh fuck, I'm trapped in a huge mansion with a bunch of fucking zombies! how do I get out??? And where the fuck is Barry?!" Awesome game. It also paved the way for many other survival horror games like Silent Hill (which btw has been a much scarier and cooler series than RE by far) and others.
RE2: You're out in the city streets. Not as scary. The whole "trapped" feeling is gone completely. The zombies are more like persistant annoyances rather than horrifying enemies. No more complex characters or plot twists like in the first one, either. And the licker monster was the only thing that was actually frightening to me.
RE3: Good action game I guess. The series is now way more focused on fighting and weapons than being scary. Its pretty much an action/adventure game with zombies and survival horror controls. Bad idea in my book.
RE code veronica: I only played Code Veronica X but it was boring as a motherfucker. However it was cool to see some better graphics on the RE series. And it was certainly better than RE3. But still way off.
RE4: the worst of them all. At least in terms of being scary. This game is almost entirely focused on combat. Even the camera angle has been changed to over-the-shoulder for better shooting. I don't even know why this is in the survival horror genre. The puzzles are rare and retardedly easy. That one boss where you had to jump on his back and mash the x button about 30000 times was an awful attempt to mimic the boss fighting style of God of War. at least it seemed that way to me.
I'm not even going to bring up the survivor ones. I think we all know what those are like. Hopefully 5 is better but it doesn't seem like it will be other than a dramatic improvement of graphics.
Do you agree? dissagree? explain.

I agree that they are less scary. The only ones I have played all the way through are RE4 and the RE1 remake on gamecube.
REmake was very scary but the whole limited inventory thing was really annoying.
RE4 was not very scary at all but I beat it 3 or 4 times and it never got old, I even traded it in for the Wii version which I beat a few more times. One of the most entertaining games ever.
RE5 looks to be very much like RE4 but with enemies that are even less like zombies. I MISS MY ZOMBIES

I'll probably rent it. I doubt I will like it enough to fork over 60 bucks for it.
I'll just wait for $29.99 =)

I wouldn't say worse and worse, but just less and less scary. And a lot of it has to do with how desensitized as we play games :P. I remember the first time I played RE, it scared the shit out of me. The first time I played Silent Hill, scared the shit out of me. Now it's damn near impossible for ANY game to make me scared besides a quick a jump. And just because RE fell into more of an action genre now, they're still damn fucking good games. RE4 on the wii was so fun, and RE5 looks fun too, especially with the co-op

I remember playing Resident Evil on the Dreamcast and it wasn't so much scary as 'fuck need ammo ... crud where the fuck is some ammo'

The games have seemed to be less and less scary, but I think that might be because I played the first game when I was about 8, and RE4 when I was 17.
The sewer part in RE4 when you start hearing the bugs running across the ground was kind of creepy though.
Also, I thought RE Code Veronica was a good game, but it was long as fuck. I thought I finally beat it and then find out I've got practically another game in Antarctica.
One last thing. I'm pretty sure RE4 and God of War came out right around the same time. RE4 might've even been sooner. God of War did do their little button mini games better though.

Which one had a room where there was a pool table and these huge fucking tarantulas? That scared the shit out of me!

That was the first one. The first game had such a fantastic atmosphere, and like said before, had the 'trapped' feeling. Really gave the game a dark feeling, and it's soundtrack is fantastic which definately helped. It's probably my favourite game ever. I had it on the Sega Saturn and have the REmake on GC too, which I liked.
Said again, number 2 does seem more based on action and shooting, but the last quarter of the game is bloody good. Very exciting at that point, I must play it again sometime..
I've played 3 and I disliked it instantly, it was all action and no atmosphere atall, which is what really made the RE series.
I found RE4 scary but it wasn't Resident Evil for me.
I'm not sure on what the new one will be like, or any other of those shitty offspring games that usually happen (Remember that first person shooter one? What was called? Apart from shit) but I doubt I'll play it because it's now gone beyond it's original means.

1st one was scary because it had never been done before, 2,3 and veronica were all poor and rather easy to finish(veronica was long) resi4 gave a new twist to the whole thing and it kinda worked, apart from the leon and the umbrella bit at the end it had nothing to do with resident evil though
and yeah i too miss my zombies......

Go play the first two again.. The voice acting was terrible even back then. And as for the gameplay... you played one of them, you played them all.
RE4 did something different, and it did it well. It was a great game.

Yeah, Resident Evil has gone down the shit hole. Used to be an awesome survival horror where you tried to run instead of fight, had to conserve ammo, etc. Now it's just a shoot em up where you're given unlimited ammunition and millions of zombies to shoot at acrodss a giant field.
Resident Evil 4 came out before God Of War. Just sayin'

Ammo conservation was a non-issue in the earlier games. I played through the first two multiple times, and never came across a zombie I couldn't kill (excluding the first ones in RE2 before the police station).

None of the Resident Evil games are scary. The only reason you think so is because you were a little kid when you first played them. Right?
Take off your Nostalgia goggles. RE changed for the better.

Lawl RE4 is a fucking classic like the first.
Who the hell cares if it wasn't "scary?" RE4 was probably overall the best RE game to date.

play on a harder difficulty.
RE4 was tense (not scary). having swarms of towns folk coming at you and taking time to aim, whilst you hear the sound of a chain saw reving up in the background...is tense.

When Chainsaw Dick (that's what we called him) first appears, scared the shit outta me.
I agree AntiMyth, the game is incredibly intense and just all around creepy. Dare I even mention the cult levels? So chilling and intense.

the chainsaw guy wasn't even original. It was taken from an old game for the turbografix called Splatterhouse.

I stopped playing the Resident Evil series after RE3 Nemesis on the PS1. The first Resident Evil is a classic no doubt, but each one after that was less scary, more repetitive and gave you a "been there done that" kind of experience.
From there I switched over to the Silent Hill series and haven't looked back since. Overall I would say Silent Hill is a more solid, enjoyable experience and is much more creepy and disturbing.

The funny thing is that he looks about 10x more like the obvious leatherface from TCM than that guy.
RE1 was the best easily. RE4 is the best to date and 2nd overall if you know where I'm coming from. 2 was great, 3 and Veronica were alright. RE4 got like game of the year or something I thought and good reviews out the ass. How is that getting worse and worse? Ok yeah, I'll admit it isn't as creepy or scary, but we are all also about 12 years older and the crappy controls that made for intense situations just won't cut it anymore. I think they also learned that creepy camera angles that they used to get a lot of scares in the first few were just pissing everyone off. I'm sure RE5 will also be great, especially with it's Co-op play, but obviously it will lose the secluded feel that made the game so creepy. I'd be all for a return to the Umbrella Mansion for a RE6 and some Co-op though.

So because he has a chainsaw and a burlap sack on his head hes copied? The picture of the splatterhouse chainsaw guy had gigantic bulging red arms. The Resient evil guy is just a normal guy in a sack with a chainsaw.

I see the differences between them. But I just can't seem to agree with the idea that the RE4 chainsaw man would be around if it weren't for the splatterhouse one. A faceless-potato-sack-head-man with a chainsaw as his weapon just seems like such a random combination to me. I've only seen it done twice and I doubt its a coincidence.
Plus, since Splatterhouse was the first game to ever recieve a mature rating, and it was considered to be the first real "survival horror" type game, I can see why future survival horror game developers might be tempted to refer back to it for some ideas.

lol I just checked it myself. I stand corrected.
Unrelated, but we all agree that God of War did it much better, right? I mean, mashing "x" a million times is nothing compared to the timing and random button variation aspects of the GOW minigames.
