Only the 60 had full compatibility. The old 80 had an emulator or something that could play most PS2 games on but not all. They discontinued it so you could buy it for $400. You can look for a refurbished 60 or one of the old 80s, but who doesn't have a PS2 and how hard could it be to turn on another console to put in a new disc?

I've solved this crisis with my 40 by keeping my fat PS2 plugged in at all times, in case of a dire need for it.

Sony cut it to keep the PS3's price low. The only way to get a PS3 with PS2 capability is to find an older model on eBay or something, as models with backwards capability are no longer in production. Here's a comparison chart

Get a ps2. Most t.v.'s have multiple av hook-ups and its much less of a pain in the ass to hit the input button on your remote versus swapping the disk in your ps3. You can probably find a used ps2 off craigslist or ebay for dirt cheap.

I have a PS3 60gb with BC, I still use the PS2 for those games though, the memory system is a bit harder to use with emulated memory cards.

I don't see how getting rid of the PS3s backwards capability is a good way to keep the price down. That seems like a pretty important thing to get rid of. They should have PS3s that don't play blu-rays but still have full BC instead. I imagine if I had a PS3 I'd be playing older games much more than I'd be watching blu-rays.

Here, final answer.

The only thing the PS3 can do to the older games is up scale them to 1080p. That is not enough to warrant buying a PS3 just to play only ps2 games. If you want the advantage to playing both, then either find a PS3 60gb online, or use a ps2 and Ps3, with a video switcher.

I used to play alot of the Tony Hawk games on there. I'm really pissed I can't get the backwards compatibility. Oh well.
