With most of the big titles hitting already, aside from wotlk for you crack addicts and maybe a 'decent' need for speed coming in the next week or so (flop imo) What is your favorite game of the year, and the biggest let down of the year.

Console Pick for 360

GTA4. Best in series imo. I was sad when I solved it. I had about 72% completion and was stoked that after so many hours I had that much more to go, when suddenly I had beaten it. Live was mediocre, but still entertaining in its own right.

PC pick - Far Cry 2, big time. FC2 may be the underdog in this years batch of awesome. Its simplicity and massively detailed open world easily make this my favorite of the year. It runs like a dream on my alienware laptop, which wont break any major speed records in terms of technology, but it sure does dominate FC2.

I also get a lot of enjoyment out of the FC2 map editor, which when compared to the Unreal Ed, it's like a walk in the park.

Worst of 2008, I have a tie.

Warhammer Online. This watered down clone of WoW failed to deliver anything of real substance strong enough to stand on its own two feet. While its atmosphere was definitely top notch, it wasn't enough to survive this boring title and I quickly canceled my account before my subscription had run out.

In fairness, my opinion of WAR is most likely baised since WoW burned me out on fantasy mmos long before its launch.

Next, for the X360 is Madden 09. The reason why EA is able to release a Madden every year is simple, they constantly have so much shit to cleanup. This year, that shit comes in the form of defensebacks and blocking AI.

Send your hb on a streak route, wait and see if the lbs miss coverage, watch hb become WIDE open, pass to hb. Watch DBS TURBO SPEED to him and shut him down. I have replays of DBS clearly breaking land speed records to shutdown a wide open reciever. It's sad that the only idea EA could come up with to shut down the deepball is to hack dbs speed to compensate for thier inability to program something a bit more realistic.

Block AI, don't even get me started. I've seen better blocking in pop warner than this. Lineman just seem to always miss the obvious block and head in field to block a guy of no threat to your hb. It's awful, you watch and see. Next years Madden will address this problem, and while the running game will get stronger, the passing game will become weaker.

I hate the fact that I'm such a fucking football freak, if I wasn't I'd save 60 bucks a year. Fuck EAs monopoly on the NFL, fuck them right in their tight asses.

I guess mine would be:

PS3 - GTA IV, fuck all the haters, it's an amazing game, prefer it on PS3 mainly because the console is quieter so I can play for hours at a time without bursting an ear drum, but also because I prefer the PS3 controller.

360- Gears 2, one of the best games I've played, loved every second of it

Best- GTA4. Sure, the missions were repetitive and the online sucked, but the technology (euphoria) was used very nicely and overall game was great. A huge jump from SA.

Worst- COD World at War. Feels exactly like COD4, enough to call it a COD4 WW2 mod and gameplay has been consolized.

Out of all the games that came out this year, it's a tie for me between what I think are the best three games:

Disgaea 3
Metal Gear Solid 4
Mega Man 9

I invested the most hours into Disgaea 3 (somewhere around 150 I believe, and still counting).
I got the most satisfaction from MGS4, and can't help but still be amazed by the game whenever I play it.
Last but not least, I got the overall most enjoyment and general fun factor out of Mega Man 9. It's such a simple game graphics-wise, which leads to a ton of unexpected laughs and jokes amongst friends as we play it (difficult to explain). It's just damn awesome.

The worst? I can't really say because I don't keep bad games on my radar, nor do I purchase/play bad games if I can help it. I'm sure there was some fuck-awful shovelware produced for the Wii or something that's sitting on someone else's hate list. Ah well.

I only own a PC but I have a few Catagories:
Biggest disappointment - Spore. I, along with many others, fell into the hype of this game and got burned for it. It was fun, yes, but not amazing or life altering as EA had promised. Since Spore, I no longer get hyped for games.

Best - I have yet to play it but Fallout 3 appears to be the best. But of the ones I have played I'd say Crysis. Sure, it had its ups (SUPERPUNCH BITCH!) and downs (aliens) but all told I'd say it outdoes most other games. Graphically... great. Gameplay - fun and innovative. Controls - great. Multiplayer - a low par. It left me wanting more but feeling satisfied at the same time which to me is the hallmark of a good game.

i disagree with both of those, GTA IV was a great game world with an average game plonked on top ("ees your cazan" FUCK OFF with the phone calls)
far cry 2 i disagree with for now. it might get better (certainly runs better than crysis) but it just seems repetitive... drive everywhere, stop to shoot people at checkpoitn, start driving again..
Best - I have yet to play it but Fallout 3 appears to be the best.
it's fucking broken :banghead: friend just had to restart his game because he couldn't accept a fucking storyline mission!
annoying as it really is good.

Wrath.

oh wait lulz

I'm still playing GH:WT because I'm just a junkie for games like that.

So that's my best.

Worst...I haven't played it so I guess this doesn't really count, but the new Banjo and Kazooie looks like shit.

Best: hard decision, but I might have to go with Fallout 3

Worst: out of all the games I've played this year, Far Cry 2 was one of the very few I couldn't even finish

The mixed reactions towards Far Cry 2 is actually surprising to me. I can easily say I'm addicted to it right now. I've limited myself to doing only ufll missions so I can go through and play it over again doing the apr missions. The traveling comes with the territory. When you have an open world as large as FC2, you should know you're going to be behind the wheel a lot. Traveling and exploring is half the fun to me. There is also bus stops usually all over the corners of the map which helps out a lot if you want to speed around.

As you get into the game, you have to start using hang gliders to get to certain briefcase spots, which is a lot of fun to do. What's really fun is doing the missions to unlock weapons, then setting up nasty ambushes on those convoys.

You guys must be real hard to please :confuzed:

Fallout 3 for the win. Game is incredible. Setting, story, gameplay, content.

Gears of War 2 is a very good solid game, its just not really that incredible or new.

FarCry 2 is pathetic. Sure it had masses of potential, however seeing how Ubisoft stamped and tore it all up is almost heartbreaking and certainly destroys any of the games small merits.

Fable 2 not enough of a game. Fun as balls but not enough.

GTA4, incredible game, too bad all the whiners bitched that there were no crazy vehicles to play with. For what it is, considering GoW2/FC2 got 9/10's it deserves its 10/10.

LittleBigPlanet, not exactly classed as an 'outright' game, more like a tool.

i played it for a few hours and it just seemed so...samey. limited.
like, the action seems the same every time.
a) come across a roadblock. shoot some guys
b) come across a random jeep. shoot at it.
c) come across a building. ambush guys sitting around it.

then drive around the same looking landscape and rinse and repeat ad nauseum.

360 Best
- Probably GoW2, but I haven't played it yet, so for now: NHL 09. Playing with 4 people, I can play all day.

360 Worst
- Fable 2. Absolutely terrible. They missed a massive part of the RPG genre: items. The items in this game are useless. You can get the best weapon within a few hours of playing. Legendary weapons are worse than weapons bought. Armor is terrible and doesn't even do anything. There are about 3 things to loot in this game (necklace, gold, jewels). And the spells are also useless compared to Fable 1. The only thing I LOVED about this game was the guns and the dog. I'm probably 20% through the story, having spent hours doing other things to what I thought would reward me in the end, but ultimately were utterly useless. Stupid game. I have no desire to finish it.

I just hope I don't buy WOTLK or I'm screwed!.

Eh, once again I think people bought into way to much hype about Fable 2. If you don't know anything about it, it is a very fantastic game. It does a lot more new things, and tries things, rather than the stale JRPG genre which has had the exact same formula for the past 20 years.

Dog, Jobs, Real Estate, family, Choices, Time changing different areas, STDs (lol) It does a heck of a lot more than most RPG's.

I agree about the items though, I kinda missed armor but I can see why they didn't include it. Nobody wore plate mail when guns came out, to me if they had big outfits again it might have seemed a bit silly...

Completely spot on! I actually gave the game a chance by basically forcing myself to plya it, and it just sucks. No question about it. It has amazing potential, but the repetitiveness of it all, coupled with a horribly presented story makes it a total letdown.

I understand the things it tried and the parts it succeeded in, but if I want to raise a family and decorate my house I'll play the sims. Fable is still an action RPG, and it fails in that regard. Even the running is unresponsive and atrocious. Honestly, if they just added more USEFUL items, instead of wasting time making 100 books that no one is going to read, and stupid dolls that you're just going to sell, then the gameplay would increase significantly. I simply don't even dig for anything anymore, or open any treasure chests, cause I'm sick and fucking tired of looting a fucking necklace. And I already know I'll have the same stupid mace or axe, whatever it is, for the rest of the game, as well as my gun. Maybe it's in its own genre of RPGs, but I definately don't like it.

Why? I loved Thief 3. Great graphics, nice gameplay, some freedom, more interesting, less closed environment.
