Hey
I was interested in operating systems, as I posted an earlier thread about which was better, XP (Pro w/ SP3) or Vista?
So... Same question
Which is better? Microsoft XP Professional with Service Pack 3
or
Microsoft Vista Home Premium?
I know this isn't a video game question, sorry. But which operating system is better for general gaming and media use (torrenting, music playback, gaming, etc.)

XP, don't be a fucking idiot.
Only get vista if u have like, dual 4870x2's, or 8gb of ram.
It's a waste otherwise.
If you got a beefy quad core, vista might be the way to go, as I have heard xp 64bit has some issues.
Everything else, XP

A regular Core2 CPU, which pretty much the minimum standard for all new PC's, and 2gb of DDR2 is all you need for it to run good. Anyone who says otherwise, cant back it up with facts, and has no clue what they are talking about. Think back to 2001, the same complaints were said about XP. Most computers at the time were 200-500 Mhz, with maybe 128mb of ram, mostly though 32mb up to 128mb, and 4-10gb HDD. Would you run XP on that right now? Fuck no you wouldnt. Windows 98 was the same was, as will be windows 7 next summer/fall. If the consumer electronic industry was ran the way you asshats thought, we would still be using pentium I, and its various clones while playing doom. In order for the CE industry to thrive it needs to be pushed by both hardware AND software to increase performance and features. So in conclusion, Windows XP is outdate and extremely unsafe, so would you like to suck my cock? I think so...

If you get more than 2GB, go vista, otherwise be lame and enjoy yourself with winXP..ram should be cheap as hell at the moment, even the good ram, so load that up even if you are on a tight budget...go vista

If you have more than 2 GB of ram, Vista will be fine... otherwise XP would probably be a better choice. I'm sitting on 2 GB of RAM and Vista is noticeably slower.

What kind of CPU do you have? If you say pentium 4 then I will choke you through this screen. The RAM is not the major factor when it comes to speed, all these people think throwing a few sticks of ram is a quick fix to a slow computer, but it isnt.

Athlon 64 Dual Core 4200+
And lack of RAM is the main cause of suffering with Vista... I've fixed so many Vista laptops with 1 GB ram and it's painful tbh. :(

That CPU was out before vista was even close to coming to the market.
Yes, RAM can hinder your performance when its not enough, but that is not what is preforming all the calculations, its just where information is being stored on and pulled from.

Most of my games run fine on Vista (even if they would run better on XP) - the main problem is the slowdown when switching tasks (e.g. from playing a game to opening FF and looking something up)... that signals a lack of RAM IMO.
My CPU is still way above Vista requirements - but Microsoft is notorious for understating memory requirements for their operating systems... remember the Windows ME requirements of 32 MB ram? I used a computer which had 64 and it ran like absolute shite... in fact ME could chew up almost any amount of ram.
So when they recommend 1 GB RAM for Vista, 2 GB would be a much better figure, and even then, that doesn't account for intensive tasks which will be performed on top of running the OS.

Still the OS shouldn't be taking a significant amount of processing power, it's job is to run the programs you want and need, it should use as little power as possible to allow the stuff you actually need to run smoothly.
When you have something over 2Ghz (single core) with 1gb of RAM and your computer lags when you start solitaire, something is horribly wrong with the OS.

I have a 4 year old computer that has a single core running at around 2 Ghz with 1.5 gigs of RAM and Vista runs fine for me. Startup and shutdown speeds are the same for me as they were in XP, and programs load about the same. As far as games are concerned I am able to max out the graphics settings on Oblivion with no problems, because I have a higher end video card. Newer games however need to be turned down, but that's not Vista's fault at all...the games nowadays are just more graphically intensive.
The point being that in my experience Vista is not only as fast as XP, but I would say it runs even better, since I don't get blue screens or freezing like I did when I was running XP.

Maybe it is because the one I tried was a Celeron with an Intel video chipset, I wasn't going to put Vista on anything useful, I just put it on there so I could learn it so when someone brings me something broken with Vista, I have some clue what I'm doing.
I can do most web browsing, media playing and just about any other normal computing task, outside of gaming, on an AMD K6 III 380Mhz laptop with 192mb of RAM and a 5gb HD. Which I did do for a little while when my main laptop died and my EeePC hadn't come yet, I had that laptop laying around, so I used it. It isn't running any form of Windows though, wasn't running anything archaic either, it was running a fairly recent 2.6 series Linux kernel, a very recent Gecko based browser and plenty of other recent software.
Right now, my most used computer has a 1.6Ghz Atom processor and 2gb of ram, I don't even want to attempt to install Vista or even XP on this.

I know it can run, probably tolerably well, but my main SSD for the OS is 4gb, the second 16gb one is too slow to support any OS very well. My current setup has more than enough software installed for most tasks, I still have over a GB free.
Besides, I guarantee it runs slower than I have now and wouldn't give me any additional useful features.

I don't even know who to quote..
I really don't have an answer. My specs are
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+
CPU Speed: 2.00 GHz rated at 3.00 GHz
1 Gig of RAM
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, 32-bit
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS
Its an overall average computer.
I was just wondering if downgrading to Vista would improve general comp. speed.
Thanks again
