I went to visit my step-brother one day and he was playing DOOM on his computer. I tried it and was instantly hooked. I bought my first computer about 2 weeks later. I bought DOOM, Operation Body Count, and Rise Of The Triad: Dark War. I guess FPS games are what attracted me.

First person shooters, turn-based strategy games and real-time strategy games got me hooked.
edit: Doom, Quake, Wolfenstien, Warcraft, Civilization, Sim City and the hundreds of obscure strategy games released in the 90s.

GoldenEye ruined my life, then to please my addiction I moved on to the stronger crack, Unreal Tournament. It's been a FPS life since.

I played video games casually for a while, but the game that elevated me to hardcore status was FFVIII. It was the first RPG I had ever played and remains my favorite game to this day. RPG's are pretty much the only genre I still care about.

Super Mario Bros. 3 was all it took for me. Then I moved on to RPG's like Final Fantasy VII and Brave Fencer Musashi. I spent months trying to N. Oxide on Crash Team Racing.
JRPG's do it for me, though. Squaresoft made awesome games like the Final Fantasy series. Star Ocean was fucking awesome too. I know they get a lot of hate on these forums, but RPG's are my life. LULZ!

I started playing the original Diablo, then later Diablo 2, that got me completely hooked into gaming, and as I was older, the idea of gaming with other people.
So now I'm an MMO nerd with no life.
Thank you Diablo.
Super Mario :)
And Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time took it to a whole new fucking level.

basically the exact same thing for me, except it was final fantasy 9. that game was my crack for like a year. had good times(chocobo hot and cold), bad times( files getting erased, spending a month on a boss to finally beat it and then learn it takes 1 item to kill instantly:wah:). but to this day is my favorite game of all time.

Yeah, the first time I played FFVIII I got to the end of the third disc and got stuck on a boss. After countless attempts I finally beat it, and didn't save and went straight into another boss fight with one KO'ed character and the other two almost dead. After that I wasn't able to beat the first boss again. All the characters in the strategy guide had 9999 HP, and mine only had about 1500.
So I restarted the game and took more time leveling up and learned how to use the junctioning system, got back to the end of the third disc again, and then my file corrupted.
I was pissed.
