View Full Version : Considering getting a xbox360

I'm thinking of getting a 360 primary to bring over to my friends house's because all they have is wii's which I'm not fond of. Anyways Walmart has the arcade one on sale for 177 CAD, or about 150 USD. I'm wondering if there is any real difference between the pro and arcade besides harddrive space. The futureshop website said they both have an hdmi output, is this true? I know I won't be able to download demo's or trailers, but I don't really care about that. As long as I have enough room for vital stuff like patches and maybe a few add on content items such as a guitar hero song or two. I know the ps3 patches are in like the 20-50 meg range, so I'm guessing I'll be ok for a few games at a time. I can still play online through xbox live I hope. The red ring of death doesn't concern me too much, because I'll just play my ps3 in the mean time. What does concern me is burning a ring into the disc. How common is this? I'm not down with paying 59.99 CAD for a new game and having it turn into a useless paperweight because it gets a ring burnt in. Sorry for the long read, but it would help me out a lot in trying to make a decision.

You can't play on xbox live without a hard drive.

All 360s made after August 2007 have an HDMI slot, regardless if it's elite, pro, or arcade
PS. I know, the Wii sucks dick eh?
EDIT: Mr. Wow is wrong. You can play Xbox Live with the arcade's 256mb memory card
The 360 only scratches your game discs if you move the console wile it's running. Don't do it and it will be fine

True. But without a hard drive, you really can't download too many things, like movies, demos, tv shows, etc... So if you aren't planning on downloading anything then you can get the arcade, but if you do plan on downloading stuff then you'll end up spending more in memory cards than if you just got the pro.

Just save up for the next Xbox, which is coming out in 2-3 years.
Or you could buy the 20GB Xbox. I'm not really enjoying too much of this generation from any of the consoles. Might just be me. What types og games do you like, though? I hope you know what types of games are the usual on the 360.

Nah, better off saving for the one after that. Why buy the 720 when you can get the 1000?

Game updates take up less than half a megabyte. I have downloaded a few game updates for GTA4 and BFBC already and I still have a lot (249MB) of room left.

Well in my opinion, it basically comes down to two things....
If you are just going to play games, and watch DVD's then the arcade is fine. But if you plan on downloading demos, videos, tv shows, etc... then the arcade won't handle it, so your better off getting the pro. Its up to you and what your going to be doing on it.

The Arcade isn't worth it.
Eventually you wil need to buy Microsoft's hard drive, pushing the final cost of your arcade well over a Pro.

Thanks for the input. I have absolutely no interest in trailers, demos, etc. I figure if I ever do need it in the future I can buy a hdd off ebay, they are not too expensive. I'm almost sold, the only thing that pisses me off about the 360 is everything is seperate. I have to shell out extra if I want a wi-fi connection, xbox live gold, and a rechargeable battery pack (another thing I can't stand about the wii). Also I have to buy an hdmi cable (I know thats not standard for any console, but still). I could live without the wi-fi and even force myself to run out and get new batteries often, but I still have to pay for live. It seems like a lot of sacrifices to make, but the 177 price point is attractive, and there are some exclusives I wouldn't mind playing (fable, Gears of War).

Microsoft's new products don't work so well, so why would you want to risk purchasing something used that might not be still under warranty?
It's your money, but I think you're making a bad decision going the cheaper route. You might as well just buy it all now as a package, under warranty, rather than spending more money in the long run for the same stuff.

I'm pretty sure I won't need the hard drive, but in the case that I do, even if I bought a brand new one off ebay it would bring the price up to the pro, so it evens out, but does not become more expensive. None of the models come with wi-fi, rechargeable battery packs, and 1 year of live packed in that I know of. I don't care for a headset, and hdmi cables are like $7 including shipping. So I can't justify spending extra money on accessories I'll never use, and hard drive space I don't need for my purposes. The console is brand new and under warranty.

The new xbox's with the Jasper chipset were supposed to be out back in August. I think it will be better to hold off for one of these since they should be appearing on shelves any day now.
