So Apparently the war in Iraq is the very last war for the troublesome M16. Its being temporarily replaced with its shorter version, the M4 carbine. So the military is replacing it with this badass new rifle, the XM8 (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/dailypix/2004/Aug/23/mil1a_b.jpg) , being developed by Heckler&****. Its based off the G36 (http://remtek.com/arms/hk/mil/g36/g36kfold.gif). Apparently the XM8 should be in soldiers hands by summer 2005.

Wtf! Is this starship troopers??
Its nice we are making some advancements, i cant wait till 15 years from now to see how far we have come.
I heard on the news that the military is getting technology for new uniforms that work with your muscles. This makes soldiers able to jump 35ft in the air and 50x stronger. Sounds cool.

I'm sure it's a very effective weapon, but they COULD make it look a little less like a toy...

Hmm... Im not sure if that is what the finished model will look like. I saw another picture of what the gun is supposed to look like... One picture is the prototype and the other is what the finished product should look like. If i can find the picture on the internet again... ill post the link. But let me tell ya, this thing looks way more bad-ass/futuristic than the gun you have posted.

I think this is the same basic rifle that was posted b4... just that this has some added shit onto it, and makes it look more bad ass:
Here is the prototype model for the new army rifle... Im still trying to find the finish product... This is called the OICW.
The OICW Prototype (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.circlevision.org/alliantaction/atk/scoop/oicw/oicw033002bg.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.circlevision.org/alliantaction/atk/scoop/oicw/oicwbg.html&h=249&w=428&sz=9&tbnid=WSKvYKXf8uUJ:&tbnh=70&tbnw=120&start=1&prev=/images%3Fq%3Doicw%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26sa%3DN)
Here is what the finished product should look like... looks basically the same, but more compact...

Theyre developing that about three miles away from my house. Some guy recently died when the 20mm grenade blew up inside of it. The diffence with the OICW is not every soldier is going to have it. Only like one per squad. The XM8 will be in the hands of nearly every soldier.

Oh i see.. so the OICW is equal to the m16 with the grenade launcher attachment... and XM8 will be the standard m16

the XM8 is actually the prototype for the OICW (Objective Infantry Combat Weapon) which isnt intended to replace the m16 but rather meant as a combat support weapon much like the SAWs and m240bs, m60s. the main advantage this bad motherfucker has over standard infantry guns is the 20mm grenade launcher and scope attached to the 5.56 rifle that allows the shooter to designate an exact area the grenade detonates at, which in effect allows him to kill assholes around corners, in trenches/rooms etc. no country in the world stands a fucking chance...

Yes, because the best looking weapon is what we are going for here.
Its funny, by the time I get out of college and actual get commissioned the Army wont have the same uniform or weapon that they do now.

I wouldn't call the M-16 "troublesome". It had some problems when first introduced, but those were worked out. It was a reliable gun that served as our frontline weapon for 30 years. That's respectable in anyone's book.
Am I the only one bothered by the fact that we are relying on H&K, a German company, to produce our main infantry weapon? At least the M-16 was made by Colt. We all saw Germany's opposition to the war in Iraq. What if they decide to show their opposition to our next war by withholding shipments of weapons or parts?

^ Good call.
I read about this gun in Popular Mechanics, it is pretty sweet.
It's supposed to have 3 different "modes" with different sized barrels for different jobs.

i don't know, they'll lose a hell of a lot of money then....
but isn't this gun that gives you the ability to time the detonation of the grenade so you can shoot over or past a wall and hit concealed enemies?

I don't think that's at all likely.

i think i saw a special about this gun, on the history chanel or something. if this is the gun..that gun is BADASS! that gun is supposed to have like 3 modes and be made by a germany company too. the awesome part about the gun is that it has programmed grenades. a soldier can make a grenade explode in mid air so that it has a better chance of taking out the oposition. but the coolest thing about the gun is the scope. The scope tells you about wind variations and what not...so it easier to aim the grenade launcer. Plus the scope also allow the grenade to be detonated at any point. the test they used to prove this was a warehouse takeover. they put dummies in a room with windows and had a guy shoot a grenade with anyother grenade launcher...yet becasue those old gun don't have that freakin' "super computer" scope, the grenade...as you would expect detonate on contact. But not with this gun...the scope allowed the granade to pass thru the window and into the room instead of on contact with the glass...then while it was in the designated area programmed into the scope it explodeing taking out every-dummy in the room...while the standard launcher test only took out the ones near the window. only bad this is...that the gun has to be recharged to power its computer. viz battery..but when there is no more power...a soldier can just convert it into a good old rifle...and use it with his own skill instead of having a "smart scope" to tell him how good he is aiming, cuz' i heard that apart from the grenade time detonating, windvane, and heat vision (thermo or watever its called), it also help soldier aim the rifle. all i noe s this gun is way to crazy to use in war...they said that this gun shall save a whole lotta more lives ( i forgot the statistics they said..but they were impressive...i mena liek they said one solder should be about to take out XXX numbers of enemy soldier before he is out of ammo..or w/e)
PS its was suppose to be inspired by that ultimate gun from the fifth element...you noe the one...thats like freeze breath..and flame thrower..and rocket launcer..and homing bullets...yea that one. it crazy how 'close' they got to it. they already have the the main parts down...instead of a rocket launcher...we have a grenade launcer with smartbomb technology...and instead of homing bullets we got 'smart' bullets and what not....overall this gun is INSANE

Your thinking of the XM28 OICW which is going to be a special weapon. The XM8 is not a prototype, it is already built and will replace the M16.
Source (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2004/Aug/23/mn/mn01a.html)
Everyone seems to be thinking this is the gun with different modes for shooting grenades, this is not it.
Droog, i wouldnt worry about HK holding back parts. They already supply the Navy with the Mp5-5n and special forces with the Mk23 SOCOM. There in it for the money, and that will keep them sending parts.

Just to clear this out.... there will be two different models of the new army rifle. The XM8 will be the standard infantry model, replacing the standard m16 that everyone will use. The OICW will be the replacement for the "m16+grenade launcher" rifle. So there will be probably about one OICW per squad, and everyone else, except for the support units, will have the XM8's... here are pictures of both so you dont get confused.
XM8 - New Stardard Infantry Rifle (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/dailypix/2004/Aug/23/mil1a_b.jpg)
X28 OICW - New 'Support' Weapon (http://www.speedconsulting.com/animations/oicw.jpg)
*The OICW is basically the XM8, with a new high-powered, computerized scope, and grenade launcher attachment.

ive been using XM8 in my multiplayer names since last november, n i have doezens of bookmarks dealing with the new gun

ok sorry i edited my last post to put this in there, but my IE shut down n i tried again but it said i couldnt
Anyways, the XM8 is sooo much better than the Colt weapons anymore, the M-16 is too unreliable, the M4 is just to complicated to really maintain, and its impossible to add a diff barrel or G-launcher without tools, and doing anything with the XM8 is tool-free
Also, the sites are "integrated" into the XM8, so the dot sites and whatever else is on there doesnt need to be adjusted like the M-16/M4 sites do
You can put the XM8 in mud, in water, in ice and it will still fire
The Colts have little recoil, but the XM8 reduces that recoil even more
and for all of u bitchin about the looks, who gives a shit, guns arent supposed to be sexy there supposed to work... the red/brown color or whatever isnt even the real color... theyll have interchangeable forest/tundra/desert/urban etc. "faces"

So Apparently the war in Iraq is the very last war for the troublesome M16. Its being temporarily replaced with its shorter version, the M4 carbine.
The M-16 has always been haunted by the fact that a single grain of sand can jam the bolt. It's inherently flawed in desert combat but wasn't designed for use there to start with. It was designed to replace the cumbersome M-14, which was heavy and hard to bring around in the jungles of Vietnam.
The M-16 I was issued during basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC was probably 70% reliable. The problem seemed to be from the fact that Ft. Jackson is full of sand! Anybody from that area (Charleston)? Do they truck sand in from someplace, 'cause it's like the beach without the ocean!
During Desert Storm, we'd target practice outside our post. The wind carries so much tiny bits of sand, you could tell when a jam was about to happen just by the rate of fire slowing down.
Anyway, for a jungle/mountainous/arctic/urban/temperate operation, the weapon is excellent. For the desert, expect to have to stop firing your weapon to clean it every 30 mins to an hour or so.
