Is a Ge-force 8600 GTS 256MB for 80$ Canadian worth it.
I have a 7600GS 512MB and I was wondering if the 8600 is worth upgrading to. I do plan on getting a better card in the future but I would like something with a little more BEEF now.

It's a upgrade, but nothing major, i wouldn't waste my money on it.

It's better, but you still won't be playing top of the line games with it.

You can get a 9600gt for like $85. It's the same thing as the 8600, but with twice the specs on everything, so why even consider the 8600?

yeah, a 9600gt is a much better card. I have a BFG-Tech 8600GTS (256 MB GDDR3)
It's not a bad card, but its old. I can play Left 4 Dead, TF2, and CoD4 at the highest resolution and mostly medium/low details. Oblivion and BF2142 run well, but mostly at the lowest settings and res. GTA4 gets about 20 FPS with every setting at the lowest (and it looks awful).
And I have an AMD X2 3800+ 1.99 GHz, 2 gigs RAM, and XP.
It can run games that are a couple years old pretty well, but the new stuff like GTA4, Crysis, etc. it really sucks. 256 MB isn't enough, really.
I'm about to upgrade anyways, so I bet you should just save for a better card.
oh yeah, and you might need a new power supply.

I got to the store and I saw that that they had a HD4670 1GB of GDDR3 for 100$ so I got that instead.
so now my rig is a AMD X2 4200+ at 2.4 GHz(overclocked FTW) 2 GB of ram the 4670 and vista, my power supply is 700wats with 4 12 volt rails, its good to go.
I also got a 80$ head set for 20$ and a 8 GB flash drive for 12$, so all in all it was a good boxing day.

Buy ATI.
Or at least skip the 8600GTS. I got one, and get the oh-so-fun 'nv4_disp' crash which will require you to restart your comp (oh, and all the "fixes" that are out there for it, don't work).
I researched it and this is an error they've had since the 6000 series and STILL haven't fixed, so I'd say dump the brand or try the GTX 2xx series. The 8600GTS seems to be one of the worst (for the crash) from all my research.

or just get an 8800gt 512mb for less than 100 that will outperform all of those.

Better then 200$ but still not the 100$ mark the US gets. I might build my next rig with them.
k I got my card already and it WAS NOT A 8600, I got a 4670 and so far it is working perfectly, tho it is not as good as an 8800 it WAS 100$ so I picked it up. And so far it is kicking ass, it is a goog an improvement over my old card as it can fun company of heroes at at max and do 45 FPS witch is better then the 25 I was getting withe the 7600 GS and I haven't even overclocked it yet.
If any 1 is building a cheep rig 1 of thees is not a bad idea especially sins you can throw a 4870 in there and crossfire that shit when they get cheep.
