nice pepper......
im just sayin.....if i want to be assjammed with popups i will come here. this site used to be cool. now it just slows my pc down, and seems like its mostly run on greed.

and i thought this was the place to comment about EBW.... just because my comments dont make you all warm and buttery is no reason to tell me to shut the fuck up...
so i should suggest that you shut the fuck up and let freedom of speech win for once in a goddamn while!

Yes. But it's not the place to spam for that other site. That's the only reason I took it down. You're more than welcome to talk as much shit as you want, but advertising is not allowed.

Ever heard of a pop-up blocker? They're free.

ok peanut, thanks for making that clear. so i can bitch about all the problems that i have with this site, but i cant suggest other places to go because it affects the hosts bottom line?
perhaps there is a reason why you (as in the site in general) is so afraid of a single mention of a site that competes that you block all mention of it.
whats next paid memberships?

:facepalm2:

So....... you're confused as to why we, as a site, wouldn't want a competing site to be advertised on our site? What is wrong with you? Do you think that we are only blocking mention of that site?

Welcome to the internetz.

snotwimp

no peanut i dont, but heres the thing, your site makes its product by scooping content from other sites that your users visit. so wouldnt it be good to be able to spread out and get more content for the users here?

piercehannigan
07-15-2009, 03:22 PM
You need to elaborate a little more on that. It's not really making a point or statement that makes sense.

snotwimp
07-15-2009, 03:26 PM
all righty.
users at ebw see videos at youtube for example (oops mentioned a name there)
and they think its funny or amusing, or that other members of ebw would like it. so they upload the video or picture to share. they get credit for doing so, and for the views they get off of that upload. which in turn increases ebw ad revenue. so all im saying is that suggesting new site that people can go to and find content to share here wouldnt be all that harmful.

Well, snotwimp, if I may call you that, the problem is that everyone does that. All of the other sites like ours do it. We are most known for it because we did it first or should I say they (the old staff) did it first. They also watermarked copywritten material and that is why they got sued over and over. "We" do not watermark and almost all of our content is uploaded by our users. So, the idea that "we" scoop content from other sites seems natural. Since everyone is doing this we don't need for everyone to be advertised on our site. It's considered a hostile gesture, snotwimp.

And considering that the users at the site that you mentioned are all contributing members here at ebw, this should be very easy for you to understand.

snotwimp
07-15-2009, 03:42 PM
ive done my share of contributing to ebw in the past myself, which is where i met the people at "that other site"
it was not so much my intent to be hostile as it was to air my grievances with how this site had changed for the worse (in my opinion) and share with others that feel the way i do that there are other places to go that are a little more laid back. (more small town like) you cant tell me that New York city bans adverts about better places to live or vacation for its residents.

and since, as you said, everybody at "that other site" is also here, youre not losing anything.

I also noticed that youtube was not censored. but if i were to mention other sites im sure they would.

piercehannigan

I guess you have a point. But if it's competition it's a gray area. You can't exactly advertise for another site on yours and justify it by saying, "Well, we're only doing it so our users can steal their content. Keep in mind that the video upload is most likely intended to be original content. If users upload material from other sites, so be it that's their prerogative.

snotwimp
07-15-2009, 03:59 PM
that's why its best left for other members to do.....

and it want my intent to purely inject competition, just merely suggest another place to go see.

Pepper Peanut

That's not entirely true. I'm not sure what's confusing about this to you. If more people leave here for there, there is a chance that they don't come back. Since they only have 143 some odd users, and we have a lot more than that, it is in our interest to freeze the numbers, or at least not promote the other site. I have a lot of respect for those involved with the other site and talk to them regularly, but in no way are we interested in promotion of their site.

Please feel free to air your grievances, as you called them, but do not promote other sites here.

Snotwimp is stupid or has no business sense if he truely thinks this site should be free from any censorship rules! Like many sites, EBW was created to generate profits through ad revenues. Why would any company trying to make a buck allow user activity that risks encouraging people to look elsewhere? There are no free rides. If you don't like this place, please whine at the other site. I can assure you they would impose the same rules.

Their should be exceptions to the rule.

Obviously redundant spamming and the promotion of other sites should be out of the question but mentioning other sites when they pertain to the subject at hand should be given some leeway.

For example - if their is a discussion about documentaries and someone knows of a really good documentary site, I don't see the harm in sharing it.

IMO, having a zero tolerance policy is a bit extreme.

I completely agree with you. What was happening was someone was complaining about our site (totally fine in my book) and then offering a solution. That's very clearly an advertisement for another site that is our competitor. I know the dudes that are running the show over there, as they are big contributors to this site. They're doing a great job and I have all the respect in the world for them, but as the sites creator has agreed, we need to make sure this site doesn't get spammed as a consequence.

If you wanted to say, "holy shit, I love cute stuff. Check out Cuteoverload.com" in a context that didn't seem like spamming no one would bat an eyelash, but this was very clearly an attempt to divert traffic.

By the way, I get my news from drudgereport.com and slashdot.org. (see?)

Not trying to be an asshole, but why can darcsystems advertise another forum in his signature?

Pepper Peanut
07-17-2009, 03:49 PM
You could do that. A lot of people have links to something they're invested in their sigs. As long as it's not the purpose of the post to redirect traffic for you gain, I'm fine. If you wanted to put EBN or CNN in your avatar, I'd have no problem with it.

Plus... Darc is hung. HUGE.

Isn't that the whole idea behind viral videos? They appear on dozens of sites.

Not trying to be an asshole, but why can darcsystems advertise another forum in his signature?

The "site" I advertise in my signature was a joke site I put up to mirror ebwf when ebwf was down for 5 days and everyone was in a panic. Trust me, it's not a competing site. No one goes there but me and a few others I talk to in person.
