View Full Version : Led Zeppelin - The best band of all time?

Led Zeppelin has been one of the most inspirational bands of all time. They include a guitar god, Jimmy Page, the most popular singer ever, Robert Plant, the craziest drummer ever, John Bonahm, and a very very talented bassist, John Paul Jones. Led Zeppelin had more than just talent at playing their instruments well, they knew how to write songs with ease, they were easily in their own leauge, no one could compare to them. With hit songs such as Stairway to Heaven, The Immigrant Song, Whole Lotta Love, Over the Hills and Far Away, Rock and Roll, Black Dog, etc.(There's too many to name, every single one of their songs was good) They conquered many, many styles from the blues to Heavy Metal, Led Zeppelin had hits in every style they covered. Each album evolved into new styles, eventually evolving into Heavy Metal, which they arguably created(over Black Sabbath). Every one of their albums got 5/5 stars, and they inspired bands upon bands. If it was not for them, many bands that people listen to today wouldn't even exist. There would most likely be no Metallica. They gave golden performances every place they went. Sure maybe the Beatles had a bigger effect on people, but Led Zeppelin had more talent, I think better lyrics(they interpretted so much into their lyrics), and more styles. So, I want to see how many people agree with me. I know i'm not alone, I have millions behind me as well as MTV. They gave Led Zeppelin the number 1 spot in the top 1000 song list.

Depends what you mean by "the best". Are you judging on how technical their music was composed? How popular the were / are? There are so many bands that have had such a huge impact on rock and roll, like Elvis, The Beatles, hell even Guns n' Roses, I don't really think it's fair to dub one in particular "the best band of all time".

Led was an amazing band, you can't say much bad about them
metal has changed alot from led zeppelin to metallica. Did you stairway to heaven is actually considered metal in some aspects? check out allmusic.com, it says Led Zeppelin arguably cerated metal next to sabbath. I mean is dazed and confused not metal? and that was released before sabbath was even together? I mean agree that they didnt start the level of heavy metal yer all used to like metallica or sabbath, but im saying after led zeppelin developed the concept for it and stuff, bands began to make it much more heavier and change the style overall.
quote from allmusic.com(great site) "In doing so, they established the dominant format for heavy metal, as well as the genre's actual sound."
Also, you ll haf to agree that Led Zeppelin was number 1. I mean look at them, look how many styles they have covered. They got hits in every single style they covered, and no other band comes close. Theres really no such thing as the worst led Zeppelin song, only least best, every one of their songs is great. That is why they are the best, also, every single one of their albums got 5/5 starts, no other bands has done this.

dude???? 3 good songs??? r u on crack!!??????
buddy, u probably only think they have 3 good songs cuz uve only herd 3 of their songs!!! If u have a good taste in music, ull find more than 3 songs, try more like uhh everything. Theres also no other band that can write lyrics like these guys did.
1 more thing, yah i found out, Zeppelin first album had metal on it and yah it was made in 1969, sabbaths first album came out in 1970. So yah, i donno maybe Zeppelin started heavy metal, and black sabbath started the kind of heavy metal were used to today.
o, once again, if u wnna find more than 3 good songs, check out that site, itll have check marks next to their best songs n each album.
led has 3 good songs that is it
Bullshit they have many great and famous songs that you have never heard becasue your too wrapped up in your Yellow Card or Good Charlotte
Great Led Zeppelin Songs:
Stariway to Heaven
Going to California
Black Dog
Immigrant Song
Dazed and Confused
Misty Mountain Hop

Zeppelin is simply amazing. Their range is incredible. Everything from kick ass hard rock songs like "How Many More Times" and "Out on the Tiles" to pure blues like "Since I've Been Loving You" to heartbreaking love songs like "Ten Years Gone" to great mellow acoustic songs like "Tangerine", they did it all.
I can't believe that someone actually pointed out that they weren't picked by MTV, the network that made Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys famous.
If you don't acknowledge Zeppelin's greatness, it means that you know nothing about music.
And Bonham (http://forum.ebaumsworld.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=22478&stc=1) was the best drummer ever. Period.

i only mentioned that mtv didnt list led zeppelin because the original poster said that mtv had led zeppelin as a #1 song or something
i in no way meant to imply zeppelin wasnt completely awesome
the mtv top 20 bands was crap, like nirvana and green day and probably good charlotte and stuff
when will you numnuts get it through your head that that mtv list was from the last 25 years, so of couse zepp wasnt on it.
Tool is the best band ever, zepp is damn good though.

and did u also know that all these sites like mp3.com steal the writing and stuff from all music.com.

Ok, all the bands back then, 1960's to around the 80's was AWESOME music. Today's music, (i think) isnt all that great. Most bands copy old bands, or their lyrics suck, or they just scream the whole time. Yes, I do like alot of the bands that are out today, but im saying the majority is extremely crappy.

well zeppelin was a major help in rock music but i dont think there is any best band ever.just veterans of the genre who opened the door for bands today. there will never be a best band ever but will definitely be a lot of kick ass always rockin hard bands that will live on forever.

09-15-2004, 07:59 PM
There really is no 'best band' when you think about it. It all depends on what context you take best to. I mean to a devout listener of big band music, Benny Goodman's band would (probably?) be the best of all time. In the genre of rock and roll, there are way to many majorly influential bands to pin out one best. Led Zeppelin is extremely awesome, influential, and will be remembered for quite a long time, but isnt this so for the Beatles? ACDC? even Fleetwood Mac would fall under those guidlines. God knows they sold enough albums. So it really is a question of what is YOUR best band, not THE best band..
And in that case, I should have to chose not Zep, although a close second, but I would have to go with The Moody Blues, my namesake.

Mtv doesn't know good music.
Somtimes vh1 has crappy lists, but they had 100 greates rock bands of all time. Here is the top 20:
20. Alice cooper
19. The Clash
18. Ozzy Osbourne
17. The Ramones
16. Cream
15. Pink Floyd
14. Soundgarden
13. Queen
12. Sex Pistols
11. Aerosmith
10. Kiss
9. Guns n' Roses
8. The Who
7. Van Halen
6. Nirvana
5. Metallica
4. AC/DC
3. Jimmy Hendrix
2. Black Sabbath
1. *Led Zeppelin*
Its kind of funny how the last 4 bands were mentioned a lot in this thread.
So, they say Led Zeppelin is #1. I think think that's pretty cool, but you just can't judge bands by other bands. They are all unique in different ways.

Of course. like I said, you can not judge great bands to other great bands. They all have something completely different in their music. For example,
Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/Dc and Black Sabbath. Who would you pick? The answer is you can't. These bands are all different in way's that makes it very hard for someone to pick which band is #1.

I'm so glad someone finally said this. Bonham was indeed the greatest drummer ever. And we should all listen to Moby Dick / Bonzo's Montreaux today in rememberance of him. Today is the 24th anniversary of his death.

I agree the Beatles are amazing but I just think Led Zeppelin was more talented overall. Look at their guitar work, singing, drumming, way better than the beatles. And Led Zeppelins sound was way more unique, im not saying the beatles wasn't. Its just overall I pick Zep. And to the guy said u cant pick, eliminate some onf which u said. ac/dc
10-14-2004, 10:31 PM
uhh NONONONO
in my opinion sadly, its only an opinion.. AC/DC is the best band. They have that passion for music. i just started listening to ac/dc, but i know that Bon died, the first singer, and they went on. then someone else died.. and they went on. watch them in the concert, i mean they pay their fans a lot of respect, running to each side of the stage like 3 times each side each song playing for the fans. and maybe you guys saw the hp commercial with they guys playing ac/dc, and you probably started rocking along, wondering what tune it was, AC/DC. and the simpsons, fans of ac/dc.
"Bart, spell AC/DC."
"uh.. acdc"
"wrong! you forgot the thunderbolt"
i like led zeppelin, they're cool, BUT THEY RELEASED STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN A LONG TIME AGO, and WE DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT THE SONG MEANS. and they haven't done a concert in a long time..
to me, the best band has to:
own up the fans
get that beat that everybody love to rock to
keep playing

in my opinion they are. in just about every poll i've witnessed about best guitarist page is either 1 or closely 2nd to hendrix. Plant was an incredible singer and writer, bonzo was the craziest drummer ever, he could do more with just his bass drum than most drummers can do with their hands and feet. and jonesy was just incredibly talented, not just at bass, but was taught classical music on piano at a very young age.

All I can state is that there is no way you can say one band is the best band other. That is reserved for the individual. You can say a band has the most catchiest songs...lol then they go on MTV. You can say they are most skill technically...then its Dream Theater. You could say Led Zeppelin is probably the band that most amount of people consider the best. Thats it.
badmoon349

I don't care for Led Zeppelin at all, and many of their fans are fools. I dislike that Jimmy Page had stolen riffs and lyrics from other groups/artists. Even worse, I had how some disregard that fact and think everything he does is original. From using a bow on a guitar to a certain amount of their riffs, people believe he was the original.
I dislike Robert Plant. There is just something about a man that acts as he is a woman and sounds like a screaming cat that doesn't attract me at all. I believe that bass wise, John Paul Jones gets too much credit. He is frequently compared to John Entwistle or Tony Levin, skill wise. That can not be anymore wrong. Those two were years above him, talent wise on bass.
As for their fans, many believe they started Metal music. Which I also believe is wrong, but that is at least arguable. I (believe it or not) have heard fans claim that Led Zeppelin invented Rock n Roll. On top of that, many of them are extremely biased and just ignorant.
The whole Satanic gimmick doesn't help either. Not only do I usually not dabble with or care for music that has connections with the occult, but using it as a gimmick (in certain ways) is just stupid.

Yes. Well, that's those stupid dolts at MTV for you.
and they are pretty good.
No. Their best song probably couldn't hold a candle to Hats off to (Roy) Harper, and that is, IMO, Led Zep's worst song.
Anyway, for once this was a thread worth bumping.
If anyone could give me the link to MTV's list, that would be great. I want to see what these idiots put for their list.

led zeppelin wasnt even on the list of mtvs top 20 bands(i dont think...)
nobody cares about that nsync, britny spears pop channel. there top 20 bands were probably shit. people should listen to real music like Pink Floyd and AC/DC.

i like led zeppelin, they're cool, BUT THEY RELEASED STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN A LONG TIME AGO, and WE DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT THE SONG MEANS. and they haven't done a concert in a long time..
keep playing
Umm one of the things that really defines great music is the test of time. That means it can last, unlike alot of music today. And if you were smart enough to look at the lyrics or even listen to a live version you'd learn that its a song of hope. And they havn't done a concert in a long time is because their drummer is dead, derrr. they accually did the unledded special with Plant and Page not to long ago showing their skill of mixing music genres.

wow its pointless to argue about that cus there is no way to prove it.
its the beatles ARE the best band ever not is.
I'm not sure on this, but I think it "IS" the best band - despite the fact it doesn't sound correct. I'm a bit of a pedant at times and this one causes me pain, but the band is still a singular noun. I've always had that terrible habit of referring to a band as a plural noun.
Meanwhile, I'm not going to try and say any band is the best. However, I don't why people seem to like Robert Plant so much. He's definitely a good singer, but his voice can be quite annoying. My vote for best singer ever would go to Freddie Mercury - but I haven't really thought about that one.
