this same "Mini Game" was in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars it takes a while, but you can beat it...

Spoiler ahead...if you want to actually play the game, don't read this. If you want to see that it is actually possible to win, proceed :)

As in Pearls Before Swine 1, the gypsy guy's moves are basically hardcoded which makes the game retardedly easy if you've played for awhile. Have him go first, and keep reloading and having him go first until his first move is 3 pearls from the 3rd row (denoted from here as <column>:<pearls>; if he took 2 from the 4th row it would be 4:2). Assuming he goes first and his move is 3:3, the progression would be like this...

3:3 (him)
1:3 (you)
3:1
4:1
4:2
2:2
2:1
4:2
2:1
3:1 you win!

actually there is a way to win no matter what....... (spoilers)









you have to convert all the pearls in a row to base 2 and add
them

in base 2 you have a 1's place, 2's place, 4's place, etc.

so 1= 0 0 1
2= 0 1 0
3= 0 1 1
4=1 0 0
5= 1 0 1
6= 1 1 0


before any moves... (you move first)
0 1 1
+1 0 0
+1 0 1
+1 1 0
=
3 2 2

then you have to make all the digits even...... so you take 4 from any row...... because the 4's place is the digit that is odd

you continue doing this... and win easily every time

in base 2 you have a 1's place, 2's place, 4's place, etc.

so 1= 0 0 1
2= 0 1 0
3= 0 1 1
4=1 0 0
5= 1 0 1
6= 1 1 0

it may be confusing... but it is the only sure fire way to win

1 2 1 as you see two digits are odd

so you need to change the '1 0 0' to a '0 0 1' for all of them to be even

so you make the row of 4 a row of 1

Thanks for the answer travelman; just one question:

Your formula works everytime when you go first. It even works most times when he goes first. So, how have they pre-programmed his moves? Have they programmed him to make some stupid moves?

IE when you let him go first, why doesn't he follow the rules to try to beat you? Have they purposely tried to give us a chance to win?

I did it ... i worked out what he was talking about.
Base 2 means Binary code.
As he has stated... (This is for thick people like me who took 2 hours to work it out )
In binary code....
1 = 0 0 1
2 = 0 1 0
3 = 0 1 1
4 =1 0 0
5 = 1 0 1
6 = 1 1 0
.................................................. .a.b..c
So if there was 1 pearl on one line.. ( 0 0 1 )
4 pearls on a second line.............. ( 1 0 0 )
2 on the third line........................ ( 0 1 0 )
and 6 on the 4th line.................... ( 1 1 0 )
.................................................. .a.b..c
add abc from top to bottom you get.. 2 2 1
eg to get firsh two in 221 add numbers between A (0+1+0+1 = 2)
as you can see all the numbers are not even (221) you need to make the 1 even either 2 or 0 . you must do it in a way so after your move, all 3 abc numbers are even. it must read 220 or 222
if you make the 1 into a 2 but in doing so you change one of the other 2s into a one it wont work.

In this example its best to get rid of all the pearls in the top row so it would read 000 on the top making abc 220.

Erm, travler man, cud u please skip all the complicated code and just tell us which pearls from which row to take, giv us an example, not a load of bollox code. I am good at maths, im 14 and im in top set but what u sed dont make sense, plz explain.

there is not a set way to win, unfortunatley, it depends on how many he takes and from which row.

The only way to know you will win is to follow his formula.
I know its tricky at first but once you understand it, it becomes easy, ( as long as you can add up).

Ok, I just beat this guy, and didn't realize the solution was posted here until now. Anyhow, my meathod was of that descibed, to make even numbers...but in a much simpler way. He will always lose if you leave a row of 3 a row of 2 and a row of 1. He will also always lose if you can leave him with 2 rows of exactly the same number (like 2 rows of 4 or 2 rows of 3). Again, it has to do with the whole even numbers thing, but I just saw it as trying to end up with a certain combo, rather than seeing it as "even numbers". Pretty good game though. That laugh really gets under your skin after awhile.

Hey, that's me above, but I can't edit (cuase of guest status.) Anyhow, i just saw what combos he was leaving me with everytime I lost, and tried to make him end up with those same combos so that he would lose. It took me more games than I would have liked to win.

I must say, he's a pretty crappy sport about the whole thing.

he starts to go then he just puts his hand down so you loose. but some times he goes for a diferant number then it works out
