What do you think is the solo ever played in a song.
My favorite is Dazed and Confused by Led Zeppelin.
I know theres a lot more that are better, but I can't
think of any right now.

Its not the most technically challenging solo ever, but I don't think a better solo exists: Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

If you just count the whole song Arpeggios From Hell by Yngwie Malmsteen thats pretty phat.
other than that,
Stairway to heaven. Not necessarily fast, but fits the chords perfectly, nice melody and good beat.

I beleive there was already thread like this a while back, but the search buttons gone now, so its cool. Well, I know many great guitar solos, but one would probably be the ones in Dream Theater - The Glass Prison

Common,,,glass prison? the second solo isn't really that good, and the first is just a few arpeggios played really fast. I mean, technically challenging, but not that interesting. Listen to the Home solo. It builds tension up until the final ascending riffs, and is released on the suspended note. Brilliant.

I also remember Gueen's "I wan't it all" having a great guitar solo. if you haven't heard it, i suggest you do so. Maybe not their best, but it's still good.

The guitarist from Alien Ant Farm has produced the occasional fantastic solo. The one from Glow is brilliant. Not particularly difficult (but anyone and their mate can play a guitar fast) It's very well structured - one phrase develops into another seamlessly, and it's neither too short or too long.
Of course all the best solos are in jazz, and not rock or metal. For good soloists (for other intstruments than guitar) listen to Herbie Hancock, Charlie Mingus, Miles Davis, Stan Getz. Stanley Jordan and Django Reinhardt were pretty fantastic guitar soloists. Go listen.

Yeah, I don't wtf I was saying, I guess it was cause it was the song i was listening to at the time or just because it's John Petrucci. John Petrucci is a kick ass guitarist though.

I like Cream's (Eric Clapton) version of Crossroads. That solo rocks.

I just remembered a great one. Lynyrd Skynrd's "Free Bird". The second half of the song is one long solo. It's amazing.
