There is a DivX program that lets you do that, but I forget if it's dr. divx, or divx pro. You can download a full version of either from the website, and I wouldn't download any trial versions, since they don't work without adware being on your computer. I think they only encode the whole DVD, so it'll take you about 3 hours of encoding, depending on your cpu, and about 700-1500mb, depending on the encoding. I don't know how to record just certain parts of a DVD.

You need to first rip the DVD with a ripper. Than you must encode the ripped DVD and Dr. DivX encodes it. If you have an average PC, encoding will last about 8-12 hours. If you have an above average PC, it may last 3-6 hours or less. Once the DVD is encoded in .avi format, you will need to use a Video Editing program to cut/edit out any parts of the video. It's a long process and requires some learning and the right programs, but its possible.

Thanks guys for the suggestions

I downloaded a trial version of "Flash DVD Ripper" and it seems to get the job done

Basically I can specify any particular scene in a movie...and record just that snippet. The output is converted to AVI and can be played back at any time

Exactly what I was looking for
