I doubt it will be the Cubs this season. They've gotta get through Houston and St.Louis first, and I don't see that happening. I know they were hurt last year, but their bullpen will kill them all season (trust me, I'm an Indians fan, I know).

I agree and disagree...Losing a key pitch like Clement to free agency amd Sosa getting older and on the decline they have little promise in my mind but hey anything could happen....

Oh fuck you. Fuck you right in the ass.
We'll have a healthy Prior, Wood will be on/off like usual, Maddux will be consistent, Zambrano is a horse. Lee, Ramirez, Nomar, Walker, Patterson, Barrett please me...Sosa if he comes to his fucking senses. I don't think we'll get Beltran, but if we do...hey...that's another bat. The biggest hole the Cubs have is their pen.

Eh, I don't know about Prior yet. He hasn't completely proved himself. Same with Dontrelle Willis. One good year in the majors doesn't give you superstar status.

Yeah, I do feel good with the Cubs this year. We have by far the best pitching staff in Baseball. One of the best offenses too, with A-ram, Patterson, Nomar, Walker, Barret, Lee (for the one month he is good). Hopefully Dempster will be a fine closer, and Dubois really proves something.

Theres no way their one of the best. Theyre actually one of the worse in baseball. If you go through thier order and match them up against any other team, theres a good chance that the other team's lineup would be better. Out of the people you mentioned, you neglected to mention Sosa. Him, along with Ramirez, Noamr, and Walker, are the only very good players there. Patterson, Barrett, and Lee are good, but not good enough that you can say that lineup is the among the best.

Why the hell would I mention Sosa, he has never been good. Sure, he hit a bunch of HRs a few years back, but from 1998-200 he had over 170 strikeouts, that is just terrible. He is one of the worst clutch hitters in baseball, he cannot take a walk anymore, he just wants to hit homerun #600.
Patterson shows signs of becoming a true hitter, and he has been rumored to be working very hard on becoming more patient at the plate. I predict Corey to have a 25+ HR season batting .290 with an OBP of about .340. Sure, he will K about 125+ times, but he is still young. Barret as hard as it sounds, is only 1 of three catchers to have 10+ HRs in 5 consecutive years, so I think he is very underated. Lee, yeah, in April-May and September he is terrible, but during July, the man was on fire when Alou was bad and Ram was injured.
As for the whole offence, if we get a lead off man, it is clearly the best in the NL, St. Louis is much older and is without Rentaria and Womak. Houston is old and probably wont get Beltran back.
The major problem with the Cubs is the lack of any closer. Dempster may work out, but Im not too satisfied with him. The good thing about having a closer is that we have the best setup man in baseball with Latroy Hawkins.

St Louis old? Albert Pujols is 24. He could play another 16 seasons. Rolen is 29. If he plays till hes 40, thats 11 more seasons for him. Sure, Edmonds is aging, but thats about it. The loss of Renteria hurts in the defense, but I've always thought of him as overrated when it comes to hitting (.287/10/72 last season) and Womack barely hit over .300 last season, but his OBP was pretty low for a leadoff hitter. I think St Louis still has the best lineup in the NL.

Other teams in the NL that have better offenses: Braves, Reds, Marlins, Astros, and Phillies.

Braves? Astros? REDS? Come on, the Braves lost Drew, and right now, they are looking in not very good shape. Astros will lose Beltran and Kent, and plus Bagwell and Biggio are way on the downward slope of their careers, and of course Berkman may not be healthy this year. Reds, now come on! That is just pathetic! Austin Kearns, Griffey, Dunn, that is about it, sure they play in a hitters ballpark, but still, best offense, far from it. Phillies may have a better punch with Thome, but once again, they dont have Polanco. Marlins, well, dont follow too much on them, all I know is that bastard Cabrera should die.
The Cardinals outfield: Edmonds, Walker, Sanders: all 35+ years. Molina is a backup on any team, and he is going to start for them. I dont expect Rolen to have another outstanding year again. Sure trading for Mulder is huge, but then again, Mulder has a hip that may literally go out on him at any moment.

Scott Rolens a better player than Ramirez. He does a lot more for his team, both offensively and defensively, not to mention hes a leader in the clubhouse. And theres no way you can say Corey Patterson is equal to Jim Edmonds. Again, Jim Edmonds is a great offensive player, and your saying Patterson is better purely on potential. Ryan Leaf had a lot of potential in the NFL but he turned out to be a huge bust. Pattersons a good player, but not in the same category as Jim Edmonds.
Also, as a team, the Cardinals are much better. I know the disagreement is on the offense, but the Cards bring a lot more defensively and have a lot more clubhouse leadership than the Cubs. Even though the Cubs have the best rotation in baseball, the Cards are still better. Just thought Id throw that in...
Even with Kent, the Astros are still very dangerous. They have Berkman, an injured Bagwell who still provides offense, Biggio whos still very effective, and the emergence of Jason Lane. Not to mention it is a possibility, whether small or not, that Beltran can return to the Stros.
When speaking about the Reds, your very incorrect. They have Sean Casey, Joe Randa, D'angelo Jimenez, and Ryan Freel, who are all very good players. Casey hit .324, 24, 99 last year.
With the Phillies, you forget about one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball, Bobby Abreu. Combined with Thome, they form a dangerous 3-4 punch. They have David Bell, Pat Burrell, Mike Lieberthal, Chase Utley, and the last time I checked, they still have Polanco. I may be wrong here, but Im pretty sure hes still a Phillie.
Edit: Avoid double posting, you can get banned for that.

Sorry about the double post, It just got to be too big. Hey, you know what, I like this board though, people at least put thought into what they say, not just, Cubs Suck, Cardinals suck, Yankees suck, if they do, they give a reason.
Edmonds and Patterson are going to have equal years, Patterson's glove is just as good as Edmonds, and Edmonds is also 36. I feel Aram is better than Rolen because of the fact that Ramirez had almost the same numbers as Rolen, even with him missing a month of the season. See, the Cubs have to rely more on Ramirez than the Cards need to with Rolen. That is why I feel he is better.
And the Reds, well, they play in a stadium smaller than my backyard it seems, which inflates numbers, just look at Colorado.
Im not saying that Houston isnt dangerous, but they still have lost a lot, Beltran was that pop that they needed, without him, they were a .500 ballclub.

If Cubs pitchers can stay healthy, and someone can step up as their closer, then they are very serious contenders. The only problem is still the offense. Their just not consistent enough. Their pitchers can keep them in a lot of games, but they need a few hitters to step up all season. Too many players are streaky.

Only offense I'm worried about is the OF corners. If Sosa bounces back, great. We still don't have a LF. Hollandsworth is a great guy to have come off the bench, but as his career has proven, he's not a starter.
Flick5150
01-02-2005, 07:01 AM
Yep, gotta agree, the only two things we have wrong with the offence is the corner outfield. If Ramirez is healthy the whole year, he will have an MVP quality year. Look at his stats in just 145 games: .318 Avg 36 Hrs 103 RBIs .373 OBP and ONLY 62 stikeouts. If he played the other 17 games, he would have had much better stats considering he missed those games during Lee's hot streaks when Lee could have given him backup.
Sosa will be terrible, he cannot hit the low pitch anymore, and that was his pitch, low and outside. Sammy will bat .230 with 22 Hrs adn 60 RBIs with about 143 Ks only because he will be hurt for the majority of the year.
Dubois though, this guy has potential, big potential. In spring training, he hit Homers off of pretty good pitchers such as Johnson. Plus he can also hit for average and get on base. Watch out for him to have a surprising year. If not, the Cubs have also shown intrest in Eric Munson, who is a good young Tigers outfielder.
