As a Kentucky fan, the greatest sports moment of all time IMO is 1998, Scott Padgett's three pointer to put UK on top of Duke.

1980, mookie, shawn bates penalty shot (little personal on a smaller scale, but it was the most exciting time of my life).

"The Play", 1982 - Greatest college football play ever. The Band was on the field, for those that weren't aware ;)
"The Catch", 1981 - Montana to Dwight Clark in the back of the endzone wins it for the 49ers, who go on to build a dynasty that lasts over a decade.
"The Shot Heard Round the World", 1951 - Bobby Thomson culminates one of the great comebacks in baseball history (albeit one aided by cheating) with a home run off Ralph Branca. Also known as "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!, etc"

Definitely not for me. The only things worse than the shot for Cleveland sports teams were The Drive and the grounder that went by Tony Fernandez during Game 7 of the 1997 World Series.

Laettner to put Duke over Kentucky in the NCAA final with time running out as the shot drains.
Only because I hate UK. :D
But seriously I would have to agree with the USA hockey team and the victory over the USSR in the Olympics.

The famous catch by Lynn Swan in Super Bowl XI (?) from Terry Bradshaw where he tips the ball then stumbles over a guy and makes the catch. That was amazing. That is one of the most vivid moments in my mind.

England travel to Germany (the Olympic stadium) where Germany have NEVER lost a World Cup qualifier in their long history, minutes into the game Germany go 1-0 up and it already looks like another dissappointment for England (Who along with Spain and Holland are the most unlucky underachieving teams in world football) but a rampant English side absolutley destroy the krauts 1-5 and gain World cup qualification.
Michael Owen scores a hatrick, the best midfielder in the world Steven Gerrard scores and also Emile Heskey finds the back of the net which was extra special for me as I am a huge Liverpool fan and all 5 goals were scored by Liverpool players........ Back of the net!!!
PS the Nazis qualified for the World cup anyway by winning in the playoffs.

1980 US hockey....The most exciting, at least for me, was the music city miracle

It's got to be the 1980 US hockey team's win over the Soviets. I still get chills when I hear Al Michael's famous line, "Do you believe in miracles?" I still get teary eyed when I watch the documentary on HBO. I can't imagine there ever being a more important sports moment in the United States.
Team Canada winning Hcokey gold in the USA (the world cup of Hockey this tear was pretty stupid even though we won, the trophy was retarded)I would say 1989 Flames wining the stanley cup, but i was too young to appriciate it, last spring would of been the greatest but they didnt catch the cup.

Not the greatest ever, but the 1997 catch by Matt Davison (Nebraska) in the endzone in Missouri, tying the game with less than a min to play, if you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm looking for a clip at the moment.

one that comes to mind although not as important is when in a game of packers vs vikings freeman had this one reception where he was down on the ground and it bounced off his shoulder and then his elbow and then his knee and then he caught it and ran for the endzone...if youve seen it you know what im talking about

For me it was the Spurs/Laker game in which Fisher made the greatest shot in the history of basketball. That was the most exciting game EVER. And then to have Fisher pull out and drain one right over Manu Ginoblli, it was the perfect ending to the perfect game

the 1968 olympics in Mexico City, when Tommy Smith and John Carlos gave the black power salute with the black gloves on after winning 1st and 3rd, very powerful image

Anybody see the Rockets comeback about a week ago? That was amazing. Trailing by 10 with a minute left to winning in regulation time with a 27ft 3 point. Damn, that was awesome.
France beating Brazil in 98 was pretty amazing. 3 - 0 too. Didn't Zidane get red carded that match?

Oh shit! 'The Curve' by Roberto Carlos. Fucking amazing. It's a penalty kick, and he kicks it.
It curves around the wall of players and then curves back into the goal.
Pretty sure that was Carlos, correct me if I'm wrong. It was insane.

Well you are right it was Carlos, it was insane and amazing.
However, it wasn't a "penalty kick" - merely a "free kick". Penalty kicks are taken from the penalty spot. Also, the game was basically a friendly which does make it a tiny bit less amazing as he wasn't under much pressure.
Still better to post about a proper sport than american crap.

Yes, my mistake. I don't know why I said a penalty shot, I should have reread my post. :(
Carlos has some amazing plays. Like the goal from the line parallel to the post. That was awesome.
The rocket shot by Clarence Seedorf is a personal favorite too.

Doc Ellis (http://www.sirbacon.org/4membersonly/docellis.htm) is the one who claimed to be on acid.
Ellis, now co-ordinator of an anti drug program in Los Angeles, said he didn't know until six hours before his June 12, 1970 no hitter that he was going to pitch.
The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn't. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. They say I had about three to four fielding chances. I remember diving out of the way of a ball I thought was a line drive. I jumped, but the ball wasn't hit hard and never reached me."
