For those who don't know, a cover is a remake of a song by another band. My favorites include:
Metallica's "53rd and 3rd", originally Ramones
Less than Jake's "Surrender", originally Cheap Trick
Dream Theater's "The Big Medley", originally a ton of bands
Offspring's "I Wanna be Sedated", originally Ramones

Some covers are worthy tributes to their creators. Others suck ass (Avril Lavigne's cover of "Basket Case"). Post your favorites.

"Mad World" by Gary Jules, originally by Tears for Fears. The Tears for Fears version is pretty good, but I prefer the Gary Jules version.

"Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm, originally by Michael Jackson. The Michael Jackson version is really good, but I prefer the heavy...ness...of the Alien Ant Farm version.

Cradle of Filth - Hallowed Be Thy Name (originally Iron Maiden)
In Flames - Land of Confusion (originally Genesis)
Gob - Paint it Black (originally The Rolling Stones)

I hated Gobs version of that, however that In Flames song is definitely a good one.

I always did enjoy Sweet Dreams by Manson, originally by the Eurythmics, also Head Like Hole by AFI, originally by NIN. And though I'm not a fan of Disturbed, Shouts remake, originally by Tears for Fears, was pretty enjoyable as well..

Imagine by A perfect circle. Originally done by John Lennon. :bang:

That is the worst cover I have ever heard.

I am 100% serious when I say this: You should be ashamed for liking that song.

A perfect circle should be SHOT for covering that song and destroying it.

It pissed me off everytime I see the lyrics in someone's away message with "-A perfect circle" at the end.....AHHHH!!!!!! JOHN LENNON DID IT!!!!!!!!

Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth Criminal" is probably the best cover ever. Other noteworthy ones are

Gary Jules: "Mad World," already mentioned

Smashing Pumpkins: "You're All I've Got Tonight" by the Cars and "My Blue Heaven" by George Whiting and Walter Donaldson (although you could argue Billy Corgan shouldn't have added two verses at the beginning, but that would make you a dick because the song was written in fucking 1927)

Before any Hendrix fans come along (excluding me), All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix. Originally by Bob Dylan. Hendrix's is brilliant.

Also his cover of Like a Rolling Stone. Its live, so its not quite as polished as his Watchtower. Still a great song

I"ll probably get shit for this, but i rather like System of a Downs' cover of Snowblind by Black Sabbath.

Yeah.... What he said Wow, I just listened to that.. The message is totally lost in the sound of the drums. The violent 'strikes' of the violin makes the message of peace really hard to get. Why did they do this man, i want to eat a smegma sandwhich after hearing that... ew

I'm not a big fan of cover songs, but everynow and then you find yourself a good one

After listening to more of Marilyn Manson, I hate him, but I must admit that I like Sweet Dreams and You Spin Me Right Round. I like the AAF Smooth Criminal song more than the Michael Jackson one, but I like the MJ Smooth Criminal music vid more than the AAF one. I like Higher Ground by RHCP but I haven't heard the original by Jimi Hendrix, so I'm not too sure where I stand on that one. I think that the RHCP 'Fire' was by Jimi Hendrix too (I know that one of those was). RHCP do Love Rollercoaster as well. I am not too sure whether they wrote that but I know that there is a gay version by some band called Ohio Orchestra or something like that. I don't like Tom Jones' version of Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone. But the one cover that I can't stand (right now) is Avril Lavigne doing Fuel :banghead: .

Velvet Revolver's cover of "Set Me Free"

Holy shit, that's a cover?! Who's it from?

- Evanescence, Thoughtless (Korn) p.s. Fuck censorship and fuck prudish parents who don't realize that their 13 year olds probably hear the word "Fuck" quite often at school. I just mentioned the word "Fuck" now two more times than it is mentioned on their new CD (only twice), but still somehow WalMart is being sued for 75 grand over this.

- Also their covers of Metallica, the Stone Temple Pilots, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, even though I've never heard em. They gotta be good.

- Smooth Criminal, as mentioned.

- Imagine, as mentioned. I'm sorry Matt, but don't let immature IMers get you down.

But the one cover that I can't stand (right now) is Avril Lavigne doing Fuel

a perfect circle started around 2000, Pain of Salvation didnt really start until around 1995ish, daniel gildenlow was in a band when he was younger and later they changed their name, but they didnt really do anything

a perfect circle's debut album 'mer de noms' was listed in an interview by daniel as being one of the albums he liked while making a perfect element pt 1, and king of loss sounds like its really influenced by some APC

Anyway, I didn't say that APC's version was better, I'm just saying that I personally liked it. No way is it better than the original.

And that limp Bizkit cover of behind blue eyes was pretty bad. I mean, I guess the music was kinda sorta ok, but the whole effect of the song was ruined by the fact that a giant 10-year-old wearing a red cap was singing it.

Pain of Salvation did indeed start in 1984, when Daniel Gildenlow was, like, ten, so obviously they didn't do much beyond schoolhouse competitions.

You may aswell consider it a new band, though, since the only things today's PoS has in common with its former self are the name and founder.

I take it that a lot of you would recognise the song "Butterfly", by Crazytown, that made them a one hit wonder. Even that was rigged. I just found out that the music for butterfly was practically taken from an old RHCP song called "Pretty Ditty". So Crazytown can't even make one reasonable song. And what pisses me off even more is that I was arguing with some idiot who was comparing Crazytown to the Beatles :banghead: .

People do that sometimes, take just the music but put their own lyrics to it. I didn't know that was the case with this though.
