View Full Version : Democracy is a Terrible Form of Government

Telling the masses to govern themselves is as stupid as letting a 5 year old parent himself. Children need parents to show them the way, just as society needs a real leader. The majority of America is always going to vote for whichever candidate is going to take less of their money. Look at how fickle people are, and how smart a single person, or a small group of people can be.

Just look at this flaw, a president can be elected twice in America. This is a terrible system, all through the presidents first term he must worry about how the decisions he makes will look to the people, because he wants to continue his political career. When you ask a president a question in public, he bases his answer on weather the masses will agree or not, which is why you can never get a straight answer from a politician.

This election the mob voted to deny basic rights to those different then themselves. Just look at the gay marriage issue. They have voted to continue having a people without a nation living amongst them. This really is not all that unusual. It is part of human instinct. We tend not to trust those different than ourselves in any way. So given the chance to deny them, human nature will make it happen. Humans are self-interested. The result of this vote should have been completely unsurprising to all but the ignorant.

This is exactly what will happen in Iraq if we were to institute a pure democracy. The Shi'ites would vote out of existence the Sunnis, the Kurds, the Christians, and anyone else within striking distance of their military. Pure democracy as a form of government is a failure.

The biggest problem in a democracy is the leader. People need a real leader. Not a leader like George Bush who can rally people in time of trouble. Not a leader like Tony Blair who can persuade his people to join an unpopular cause. Not a leader like Bill Clinton who gives the people what they want.

No. They need a Leader who will sacrifice his career to pursue a course he believes to be right, good, and in the best interest of his people - despite whatever beliefs they may, in fact, have themselves. True leadership involves making unpopular decisions, sometimes wildly unpopular ones. Unpopular decisions do not mean they are bad decisions. Voters have very short term viewpoints. Real leadership has long term payoffs, not short term ones, which is why it is usually politically suicide. Leaders must look beyond the noise and find the true calling.

I have always been fond of this quote:

Democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried.

Democracy, like Communism, looks GREAT on paper, but it would never truly work. There are too many decisions to be made, and the public if NEVER given all of the information needed to make decisions.

(Don't take this as a D vs. C post or anything)

Ok, not that I agree with Fascism, I think the less-educated should not be able to make decisions... like... the next President... I know this will never, ever happen, and there is no true PC way to go about doing this, but I think the world would be much better off if the educated could make the decisions... but only if they are NOT going for any personal gain.

Real democracy has never existed because it shouldn't exist. Ever heard of the tyranny of the masses? If we had true democracy we'd still be hanging murderers and rapists in the streets. America itself is no democracy, it is a republic. You elect representatives (with a small "R") to make decisions for you.

The problem with democracy is that it's great on paper, just like all the other governments. It's just the least horrible government.

Well, democracy is not only great on paper, but also thus far has been the most successful form of government. However, while I won't go as far as to say it's terrible - because of the success that has come out of it, particularly in the human rights department - I do believe that a dictatorship is the best form.

But since you basically borrowed the idea behind my other thread, I might continue and say that democracy is effective because it makes people believe they're free. What it doesn't actually do is free them. Consequently, it's quite unproductive, concerning society, and rather quite self-centered. But, as a beneficiary of a democratic society, I love it.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Edit: Tyranny of the masses, eh? :D A nice little segment in the federal papers (No. 10). America is indeed a democracy however. It's a beautiful example of revised democratic theory. We also have more safeguards against tyranny of the masses than do other governments, like say... Britain.

I think Communism works well for a good while, but for how long? Look at Russia.

Democracy can be terrible but it's for the people. Freedom matters.

Er, Communism never worked well in Russia. Right from the start people suffered under it in the early 1920s.

The majority of America is always going to vote for whichever candidate is going to take less of their money. And the minority in America are always going to vote for whichever candidate is going to take money from the other group and give it to the minority.

Welcome to the real world.

Viceroy, love your new picture.

dictator ship

Ahoy matey.

Communism works on paper, but completely butt-f*cks itself when implemented, unless you can control corruption.

I have always thought it a good idea, to make an exam that you must pass before you can vote. Or lets say you need atleast a 1200 on your SAT or something. Things would be different :).

Agreed, but there would be riots and riots if anybody even thought of tryin to do that.. I agree it is disrespectful, but sometimes people need to put things in front of their own damn feelings...

in theory the best form of government is communism, it's basicly a utopia, too bad people are power hungry and greedy... :shuffle:

Thats what we've been saying... in theory both Democracy and Communism look great, but they could never truly work.
