So yesterday at school I'm taqlking to my freinds about soccer and crap when one of my freinds comes into the conversation saying, "Soccer takes no skill." I wanted to punch him in the face right then and there. Now this kid is obsessed with hockey, and I admit, hockey takes skill, and I even said that to him. But to say that soccer takes no skill? What the hell? Soccer takes a lot of skill. You can't just put somebody who's never palyed soccer in the goal and expect them to block penelty kicks. You can't just take someone who's never played and expect them to score right away. But the kid still wouldn't understand me. So I just gave up.

Soccer takes a ton of skill. I haven't played the game since the second grade, and I bet if I tried to play it now I couldn't. I don't like the game, but I respect it.

Sure it takes some skill, but most of it is determined on what kind of shape you are in. Less skill is required here than say baseball, but fat people can say baseball.

Ah, a good soccer fan, who lives in Illinois no less.

And I think the reason that most people in America don't like soccer, is because #1, we're obbsessed with football(I'm not entirely sure why) and #2, because we don't have a very great league. The MLS isn't very good. But that's mostly because it's still a new league and they haven't been able to find much talent yet, and when they do, they get bought by a team in Europe. Hopefully the MLS will get better. But for now, I'll just stick to English Premier League.

I have played soccer for 12 years now, and it most definately takes skill. I am a goalkeeper myself, and I have to deal with people curving their shots, power shots, lob shots, cum shots, etc. ;) No seriously, soccer is really a great game, and people who say that it takes no skill are ignorant and/or have no clue about the game.

P.S. I am actually in an indoor soccer league right now, and not only does it take skill, it is also extremely fun.

Yeah, that is what I do. I've played AYSO every year since 1st grade, and after that is done there is a little indoor tournment that we do. I am too old to play now, so I was the head coach for a boys under 14 team this season, and am now the assistant coach for the area all-star team. I really love soccer, both coaching and playing.

I disagree. I never pass up a chance to go to a Galaxy game (the local MLS team) and watch some soccer. I love watching the teams set up passes and send through balls to one another. True, watching it on TV is a bit less enjoyable, but still entertaining for me at least.

I watched it on tv once it looks like its really physical and running and all. but kicking a ball around dosnt look to hard.

That why I like foot ball its so complicated i could never do it I might be a lineback or something because its does not take a lot of knowlege all u got to be able to do is pick up blitz.

But neway i have respect for people that play soccer but would really never do it because i dont find the fun in kicking a ball around for 1 hour.

I am 23 so I guess I have been playing for 20 years, in England as soon as your old enough to walk you are given a footy and told to get out of the house, all me and my mates did when we were kids was make goal posts out of dustbins and anythin else we could find and play, infact i bet it was the same for 90% of British youth except girls and gays.

Footy takes no skill???? Anyone who thinks that either doesnt play or has only ever seen MLS, I can tell you right now if you had no skill when you were in school it was found out pretty quick and then you would be stuck in goal for the whole Phys Ed year and nobody wanted that, stood knee deep in mud on a freezing cold rainy winter day having people volleying footies at you at 60 mph for an hour.

It might be the hardest thing to do but how many times in one game does a player hit the ball. Goals in soccer are much more exciting because the goals are much more dramatic and rare rather than a player hitting the ball foul or fair on a hell of a lot of steroids.

To say soccer takes no skill is obviously the view of those who have never kick a ball before. It would be easy for me to just respond with a "hockey or baseball takes no skill" responce but I never really played them so I wont question them because I know there are probably many things I will never beable to do in those sports.

Just because you dont like the sport doesnt mean its boring or easy or gay*.

You have to understand the history of football or you have to have atleast experience a game before you can judge it. They dont call it the beautiful game for nothing.

Try matching Ronaldinho for skill, scoring against Kahn or Schmichael, try getting past Maldini. Football/soccer takes alot of skill whether you find it interesting or not.

For probably about 80% of the european male population, many north and south American males, even some females and me ... football is the most passionate game you will ever play.

The F.A cup finals, Beckhams last minute freekicks, Moores last ditch tackles, Gordan Banks super save, Gazza's goal against scotland, 5 - 1, 1966, Geoff Hurst, Pele, the Hand of god, Gazza's tears, Vinnie's dirty tackles, world cup finals, Ronaldinho's skill, Zidanes touch, Ronaldos teeth, any brazil team, the klinsmann, George Weah takes on the whole pitch, Baggio's missed pens, Greece winning 2004, Thierry Henry, johan Cruyff's skill, Carlos's freekicks, George best .etc .etc .etc

What about the other parts of the world? Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. And for the people who say soccer sucks and they say it takes not skill actually completely suck at soccer. My friend said it takes no skill and it sucks at camp. We had to play a soccer game and he got the ball and had no idea what to do. When he stopped hesitating he kicked it as hard as he could but missed. Skill is hitting the ball in the right part of the ball, not missing, being able to dribble, and having a good shot.

I'm talking about Football (soccer), you say it takes no skill?, try controlling the ball with your feet, dribbling, passing properly, shooting, bringing it down from the air and stopping it dead with your feet etc. You just say it takes no skill because you hate the sport, and you're just an ignorant numbskull period.

I was a football player all through high school and I would hate when I had teamates like you. As an athlete you should realize that soccer takes an incredible amount of conditioning and skill. They are just as good of athletes as football players, but in different aspects.

All sports must come to an end ?

Bullshit

Soccer is a million pound sport. The top players get more in a week than whole families earn in a year in everyday england and american.

Soccer, basketball, baseball, hockey and football are more established now than ever before. You will be gone before they are.

With all do respect, that has to be the dumbest answer you ever replied back to me.

U didn't agree with me about soccer coming to a end, then you agreed with me by saying it will be declining after I die.

You act like I said Soccer was ending in 2 weeks or something. I never said Soccer will be gone in this decade. You asume shit I didn't say.

Damn your kind of people. Always trying to argue with the whole world for pointless reasons.

End of story.

Ok, so you didnt seem to comprehend the point I was trying to make in my last post, well understand this.... your great grandchilds, son's, cousin's sister's, daughter's, niece's, brother's, son's, nephew's, daughters friend will be dead before football is.

For all you poeple who dont seem to or what to look past your helmet, here are some stats and facts.

* The soccer world cup is the biggest sporting event on the planet. Just over 30 billion watched the World cup in the U.S.A (1994), over 33 billion watched the World cup in France (1998) and 28.8 billion watched the world cup in Korea/Japan (2002), the dip in viewing figures was due to audited research for China been introduced for the first time which took China out of the equation, the global figure is actually up by 431.7 million (2%).

* Soccer is a bigger sport in the world and has a bigger following than Baseball, Basketball and Football (American) combined.

* 205 national teams are now registered with fifa up from 100 in the 60's and it continues to rise, including teams like Gaum, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Yemen and Kuwait.

* Football (soccer), more than any other factor, has enveloped whole regions, people and nations. With approximately two hundred million active players.

* One of most expensive sports star in the world ever is soccer player Zinedine Zidane, signed by Real Madrid for £49.5million (around $60m).

Maybe in America football is considered a bit of a non-contact sport bcoz its played by mainly girls but I can tell you from experience football in Britain is not a "Fag" sport, infact you are considered a fag if you dont play..... If you lived in England I would take you to a game and then 5 mins into it when someone has crunched you and you were lay in the mud crying wishin you had stayed in America and played mens netball (basket ball) I would remind you it was a "Fag sport" and laugh at you.

Hey guess what? There are more career ending injuries in soccer then there is in any other sport. You like fottball do ya? Well I got nothing against football. I like to play it with my freinds. But in football, at least you get a buncha pads. A helmet, shoulder pads, chest protecter, elbow pads, knee pads, but think about this. In soccer, all you get is a fucking thin piece of plastic that goes by your shin. Nothing else. And when you're going up for a header and knock into somebody, then how is a shin gaurd gonna protect you? And even with the shin gaurd, people have still broken there legs in soccer. People have shattered their ankles and ended there careers so many times. I've seen people get kicked in the face, twist there knee's, and break there wrists. Trust me, soccer is DEFINETLY a contact sport.

Yeah I have had my fair share of injuries some serious others not so serious. I once broke my arm in 3 places in a cup game, what was realy bad about it is I had scored 2 and was well onform and looking like getting a hattrick, also my team (Power Rangers FC) were winning 3-2 when I left the field to go to the hospital and we lost (I cant remember the final score).
I have also twisted my knee and am still waiting for physiotherapy to sort out the problem so I can play again. The other injuries are cuts to the head resulting from heading another player rather than the ball and I have been sent for x-rays an uncountable number of times through footballing injury. My mates call me "Sick note" or even worse "Daz" bcoz there is a football player who plays for Birmingham City called Darren Anderton who has spent more time injured on the sidelines than he has on the field.

dont mean to start crap and i do believe soccer takes skill just not as much as other sports but here is my observation:
in a. football punters and place kickers (most of whom were soccer players or are good soccer players) are considered pussies. Just thought id point that out

soccer takes a lot of skill to play. being able to control the ball smoothly, controlling your kicks. I suck at controlling the ball, thats why i play goalie.

The fact that they played soccer sin't the reason they're considered pussies. It's the fact that they stay on the sideline most the time, and hardly do anything. But being a place kicker or punter does take skill. It's not the easiest thing in the world to be able to kick the ball through the field goal. Especially with blockers trying to block it and shit.

If your trying to say that "Punters" in American rugby are good at football/ soccer bcoz they can kick a ball long and far you are very mistaken, I bet I could run rings round every single American rugby player with a football (a real one, you know one thats round).
Also you are kinda hinting that people think football/ soccer players are pussies.......
Roy Keane, Steven Gerrard, Patrick Viera, Vinnie Jones, Niel Ruddock, Graeme Souness, Tommy Smith.....
These are just a few I can think of off the top of my head who have played in England over the years, it would take a very brave person to walk upto one of these and call them a "pussy" or "grass fag", infact if you gave them guns and sent them to Iraq they would probably kick some arse.

I never said Soccer wasn't big in the world? I know it's the biggest thing in the world.

But about Soccer making it #1 in the US? It'll never happen. We have way too many sports. Majority of Americans have spoke on many polls saying Soccer wasn't much fun to watch. It's the truth. (Nothing personal against soccer fans)

The main reason Soccer is slowly rising is because our country is getting more populated. A lot of latinos are moving in America by big groups. (Nothing Racist or anything) Latinos are big on soccer. As those Latinos familys kids grow up in American in the next generation, they will find other sports other than soccer. This is what I think.

150 billion to be exact

Here's a tip. Just so you don't sound like more of an idiot who tries to act smart, maybe you should change your numbers so it doesn't look like the general world population has suddenly started having major orgies and making babies in huge numbers.
