got the LCD for christmas. plugged it in and got odd waviness. at first i thought it was electromagnetic interference from something, perhaps my external hard drive which is only a foot away, so i turned it off. didn't help. turned off everything else around it. nope. took my dad's LCD and tried it on my comp, and got the exact same waves. tried plugging my new LCD onto his comp and it was fine. so the problem is with my computer. i tried installing the newest drivers for my video card (nvidia geforce2) and that didn't help. i'm running out of ideas here. :banghead: so before i go taking my computer to National Computer (where i bought all the parts when i built my computer years ago), does anybody have any other ideas?

This usually works for me when I'm having a few cpu problems, be it with the mouse or the keyboard etc. Turn off your computer and unplug everything, I mean everything connected to the tower. Leave it unplugged for maybe 5 mintes or so, then restart the computer and hopefully everything should be working fine.
If nothing works, I guess just bring it back. Sorry dude.

i already did that. in fact, once i unplugged everything, i opened it up and vacuumed out the inside. cleaned everything on my motherboard and video card. i thought maybe dust was messing up one of the connections somewhere. that didn't fix anything.

Should be an easy solution for you man. Just go into your monitor properties, and check your refresh rates. Set it to the highest refresh rate the monitor can handle. My screen refresh rate is set at 75 hertz, and I have no waves. But, if I set it to 60 hertz, I get a shitload of waves. Try setting that to the highest, and let us know what happens. ;)

yeah, i had also already tried that. the highest mine would go to was 75 htz, and it seemed to help a little bit, but i could still see some waviness to it. it was better, but it would still give me a migraine after looking at it for a few minutes.

you probably have to set the resolution to a lower setting to get a higher refresh rate. My monitor has a max. resolution of 1280x1024, but only at 65Hz, so I keep it 1024x768 at 85hz.

I recently had a wavy line problem when I installed a new video card. Go into your display properties for your moniter and look for anything that says "Vertical synchronization" or something like that, and turn it on. It worked for me, hope it does for you.

i couldn't find anything called "vertical synchronization." where did you find that?
here is something weird...
when i have my res set to 800x600 at 75hz, it's flawless. when it's at any higher res, even only 960x600, or at any lower number of hertz, even just 72, the waviness reappears. from what i can gather, this was basically the cheapest LCD my parents could find, before technically being able to put it into the "piece of shit" category. i guess you get what you pay for. everything is fucking HUGE right now. i hate being on computers like this. my desktop feels claustrophobic. :(

Greg, do they have a customer support service number? Call them up, they are the experts at this stuff. :)

NEVER!!!
i would never ask for :help: by calling customer support.
(but asking for help on a forum is fine)
the instant i try to do that, my balls disappear. it's just the way it is.
(ugh. shit. i'll probably end up doing that.)

who is the manufacturer of your monitor

mgunit, that helped a little bit. but didn't fix it completely. it seemed to help it in certain resolutions more than others. but i can still see waviness no matter what resolution, except for 800x600. :banghead:
i'm starting to think maybe the power output of my old video card is too weak to support this new monitor.

Try setting this (http://www.tenpastmidnight.com/pc_advice/monitor_adjust.html) page to full-screen and trying Auto-Adjust agian.
Out of curiousity.. is it connected via a digital or VGA connection?

You were right earlier when you were talking about the monitor looking flawless at 800x600. My monitor is like that, too, but only looks flawless at 1024x768 or less. If I were you, and if my monitor could support it, I'd take the new monitor and use it as a secondary monitor, and hook up your older monitor as the primary. I'd hate to be stuck at an 800x600 resolution. Might as well be using an Xbox with windows at its 640x480 resolution.

IT HAS BEEN SOLVED
got a new video card. upgraded from a geforce2 to a geforce4. as soon as i plugged in the new monitor, it was fine on all resolutions. so either some of the drivers for the old card weren't good (even though i installed the newest drivers possible from nvidia's site) or the power output simply wasn't enough to handle the new monitor. personally, i think it was the latter.
anyway, thanks for all your help, people. i'm just glad this is over with.
although...
one of the fucking pixels is fucking fucked up. in case you didn't know, all pixels are actually a group of blue yellow and red. this one damn pixel won't ever turn off the blue. so on a black screen, you see all black, except for a little dot of blue. and all other colors it's supposed to be, it makes it more blue than it should be. being as neurotic as i am, i am seriously going to be pissed off every single time i notice it. it's 99.999999% perfect, and this will piss me off to no end. i tried taking it back but they (office depot) only have like a 10 day return period. my parents bought this monitor over thanksgiving break, and then gave it to me as a xmas gift a few days ago. fuck, they don't even carry this model anymore. shittle. hell ass.
life is awesome.
