Wasn't 99 Red Balloons by some German band or something?
My favorite remake would be Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) by Nickelback, and I think it was originally by Elton John (fuck the what?). It's a nice song, but I don't put Nickelback on my favorite bands list.

Shout 2000 . . .what a great remake. Mine would have to be the remake of Du Hast (by the same band- Rammstein) into an english version. I can finally understand what he's saying!
No the band nena originally did 99 luftballoons. Goldfinger redid it and made a hell of a song.

I disagree. One thing I think alot of ebaumers know about me is that I'm a huge Doors fan.
Marilyn Manson remade 'Five to One'. And I really really liked it.
If you want to talk about a bad Doors cover.. Play Need for Speed Underground 2, and listen to Snoops remake of Riders on the Storm. It's catchy, but it's not good.
And Jay-Z redid a bunch of Beatles songs.. I think he's going to be cleaning toilets in hell for that one.

He didn't do it. A DJ named Dangermouse did it. He made the Grey Album by combining beats from both Jay-Z and Beatles songs and put them with Jay-Z's lyrics.

Thats three good cover's Metallica has. "Turn The Page"(Seger), "Tuesday's Gone"(Skynyrd), "Wiskey in the Jar"(Thin Lizzy)
But for my list...
"Hallowed Be Thy Name" - Iced Earth(Iron Maiden) - They did it very respectfully and well, loved the vocals. Even though Iron Maiden's version kicks Iced Earth's ass, its still a good cover, no one will ever beat Maiden.

Snoop Dogg's Gin and Juice covered by Phish and Les Claypool is one of the best remakes since it changes the whole song from rap to abit of country and funky feel.

Awesome Covers
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix Experience/Bob Dylan
You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC/Led Zeppelin (originally called You Shook Me)
Awful Covers of Awesome Covers
All Along the Watchtower - Dave Matthews Band (if this band is covering any Hendrix, it won't work)
You Shook Me All Night Long - Celiene Dion (not really a traditional cover, but she performed it on stage)

Children of Bodom - The Trooper (Maiden)
Santana - She's not there (Zombies)
Aerosmith - any Beatles cover (The Beatles)
Judas Priest (I think) - Paint it Black (Stones)
Edge Of Sanity - Blood of my enemies (Manowar)
They each have their own added qualities. Hard to say something is better than the original because it wouldn't be there without the original.

Lot's of my faves have already been mentioned. Marylin Manson Covers suck.
Anyway, other faves are:
"Ice Cream Man" By Van Halen. Not sure who originally wrote it, but a great rock song.
"People are Strange" by Echo & The Bunnymen. Vocals will never top Jim Morrison's, but the organ solos are cool.
"I Don't Wanna Grow Up" By The Ramones. Again, not too sure who originally wrote it (too lazy to look it up), but a great Ramones song anyway.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but, replying something to an old one is always better than making a new one. Remember, 'Posting & You'!
Anyhow, my favorite remake of a song would be Children of Bodom's take on 'Repent (Whore)', originally done by Cryhavoc. Sounds really good.
Also, their cover of Iron Maiden's 'Aces High', and Ozzy's 'Shot In the Dark' are quite good too.
