So, me and three friends are going to start a band soon, and when I bought my bass, it came with a 15 watt amp. What I'm wondering is, will this be enough? Or is it a good idea to go bigger? Suggestions?

Always depends on what you're doing. For playing shows or anywhere that you need alot of volume, it's gonna suck. But if you're just jammin in a room with some other people, it's just fine. Of course...bigger is ALWAYS better, and whatever you do, try not to settle on equipment. If you can save up just a little more and get the best, DO IT. Or you'll just end up either wishing you did, or end up just spending more money on something else. I had a 10 or 15 watt amp at first, then intead of buying somthing I liked right away, I just kept saving and bought a 300 watt, Ampeg SVT II with a Classic 8x10 cab. It's awesome. And of course it all depends on personal preference too on what you get. So shop around and take your time.

Hey, I managaed a music retail store for a WHILE, sold many bass rigs to many different levels of players and the general rule of thumb is if you need to play over a drum set you will need at least a hundred watts. Bass waves travel much different than treble waves of a guitar so you will also want to carefully consider placement of the amp. Also, not that your there yet, never mix bass from the stage.

Well, in my band, I have a 40 watt amp (Roand Cube 40), and it is the loudest thing in the band. But, make sure the amp isn't pointed towards the drums, because the snare drum will ring a lot when the snares are on.
But, with my experience, bass amps are much louder than most guitar amps.
I doubt that my opinion would count as much as a retailer though

Not that it matters or anything... but that isn't true. I prefer quality over quantity. A good quality 100W amp is gonna kick arse over a shit quality 300W amp. I'd be happier with good sounding, quieter music, than loud shit quality music. This is taking it a bit far though, but just wanted to point out that bigger is not always better.

Well in my band I have a 50 watt bass amp and my friend has a 120-watt guitar amp, and they work pretty well in tandem with the drums. We just added a new guitarist, and he's going to buy a 100 watter and a new axe, but for our first practice together he used my spare guitar with a little 15 watt amp and we sounded pretty good together.

I agree with you on that. I could have gotten a 100 watt amp for the price of my 50, but the guy at guitar center said mine was better, so i chose quality over quantity.
