This has got to be one of the worst things to happen to sports in a while.
The fact that these people could not compromise is disturbing to me.
The loss of the NHL season hurts everyone, but especially the fans.
I'm not a fan myself, but if I were, I would find it hard to ever watch the NFL again.
This is both the fault of the players and the owners.
The players have to realise that the owners are in charge, not them.
The owners have to realise that if they want to have a championship team, they have to pay the players.
What a dark day for sports.

i think (i say i think because i have switched sides so many times) that i was on the owners side, but this is absolutly their fault, they REFUSED to compromise.

If you care about the league in general, there needs to be a salary cap. This creates a balanced environment for all the teams. This helps the owners, which some fans may seem greedy and side with the players, but it is about the league and not really the players or the owners. The players must realize the owners can outlast this lock out. I think the salary cap should be made to a point that all teams can meet. This limit should satisfy most of the players in the league. If a team can't spend enough to even reach the limit, they shouldn't even be allowed to have a team in the league. Making a profit should not justify being in the league, you must be competitive as well, they owe it to their respective fans. A salary cap is a must and I don't think owners should compromise with anything else until the players accept the a salary cap.
In the meantime, hockey fans should start looking into Major League Soccer. If you go to hockey games, go out of your way and visit a soccer game. You might actually enjoy it. This is an expansion year, with two new teams added. Check it out www.majorleaguesoccer.com It is almost like hockey, just with a ball and primarily the use of feet.

So, the NHL is permanently gone, or are you just talking about the season?

Just the season. Hopefully, they can reach a compromise in time for next season.

they need a salary cap.
I don't really care too much for hockey but it's better than baseball on my list and it's pretty messed up how it was beaten by NASCAR in ratings.

Hopefully permanently. Who actually watches hockey, besides canadians?

Bitches? Nah j/k I actually only watch the playoffs, but it is definitely exciting to watch, I mean, no commercial breaks during almost whole periods? There's never a break in the action, and most people don't watch because they don't watch enough to see goals scored, but when someone scores you definitely get pumped and keep watching

The thread's about NHL, not baseball. Anyway, so much for this "hockey is dead" because it's not. Seems to have taken everyone, me included, by surprise with this salary cap agreement.

I'm interested to see the new gameplay changes... hopefully smaller goalie pads will be implemented, and something to speed the game up.
I agree a salary cap is needed, its a shame there was only a $6 million gap between the NHL and the union...so close yet so far.

Good Luck getting the fans back, well they might not have trouble getting fans back in cities like boston, new york, detriot some other cities. I know I would go to the bruins game whenever hockey starts again, and im sure there are plenty of people who will be dying for hockey to start and go to a game, but if there is no hockey next season also, it could be a different story.

I also want to see the game open/speed up and scoring go up. This way players with scoring skills can showcase themself better and more fans will watch the game.

It wasn't just that $6 million gap, there were still plenty of disagreements between them. The best thing out of this, was that the players agreed to a salary cap, which they would have to eventually. I don't know what the other disagreements are, but that gap was not the primary reason the season got cancelled.

The Minnesota Wild sold out every game they had because Minnesotas a hockey state. I admit, hockeys awesome in the playoffs. but the seasons to long and you kinda fizzle outta it till playoffs and then you watch it. but the NHL doesnt compete with state high school tournament in this state. thats like Texas football up here.

Today I think.
As for the Lock Out... I blame the Owners, they created the issue by over paying these guys, they shut they began the lock out and they made no movement on the issues. Bettman is killing this game.

If I was a hockey fan, I'd never buy tickets for another game. I still haven't bought tickets for a baseball game after the '94 strike, so they know I'm serious.

If the owners don't want to pay them that much, they should make an agreement amongst themselves. They seem to be so unified now. Oh wait, they are greedy assholes.
