I agree with all those bands, with exception of Guns and Roses.
But clearly the most overated of the remaining bands is U2, man, they aren't that good.
Also In my opinion these are also overated:
- Bad Religion
- Lenny Kravitz

U2 is now definitly over rated with vertigo and the huge stuff they do now, but they are still good.
Also how do you think GNR is over rated? I really don't have any idea if they are or not, but I like them

Yea I didnt think of that. The only time I think of U2s new stuff is when I see an advertisment for their new cd.
As for overated bands I would give the golden star to Audioslave. End of thread.

Jet - They consider themselves as big as AC/DC with only 1 album that they have released
New U2 - Their new stuff is horrible, no grammy should ever be given to them
Nirvana - Just not a good enough band to get all this credit
Green Day - People consider them in the same league as the Ramones, but in reality, they are only OK, (I hate Boulavard of Broken Dreams too)

Overrated by the public, just about anything on MTV. Overrated by the people I know...
Tool
Radiohead
Dream Theater
Led Zeppelin
Rush
And I like half of those bands, I just think they get a little too much praise.

Nirvana is the most overated band in history.
They may have started a movement of music, but IMO their music was shit. They may have had insightful lyrics, but there was nothing special about what they played.
And saying Pink Floyd is overated is INSANE.
These albums are overated?:
Wish You Were Here (September 1975)
Animals (January 1977)
The Wall (November 1979)
These albums are fucking fantastic. EVERY aspect about them is fantastic. From the music to the lyrics. Shame on you for calling Pink Floyd overated!

The most overrated band is any contemporary band that is compared to any classic, time-tested band.

Does Britney Spears count? Shes not a band but she is so damn overated. Yes she is nice looking, but without makeup she is really pretty plain, her voice is average. I have little respect for so called artists that don't write their own lyrics and can't play an insturment. I have more respect for Avril Lavigne, she can play guitar and writes her own music. Britney rates right up there with Hillary Duff when it comes to talent, zelcho

idk... i would surely say Good charlotte. but i want to say something else. People keep saying Nirvana is overrated but i dont think they are... i think if they were around today playing that music then they would be but at the time it was like revolutionary shit. Im not saying they were awesome musicians, but thats not the point... They were thinking differently from everyone else at the time... so i dissagree with the bashing of the Nirvana...
and yeha i dont really like Nirvana but i still think they did good things.
as for a few bands i think are over rated... umm a whole fucking lot. the tops of my list are good charlotte, simple plan (those types of bands), umm, all of those girls, (ashly simpson, hilary duff, britany spears, that list goes on)... idk thats it for now i spose...

It seems to me that all of the VH1 artists who are featured are always bad...but highly rated...examples: joss stone (good voice, but too young for her own music if that makes sense) jamie cullum, and jet. also bands like oasis and death cab for cutie. also napoleon dynamite (o wait a sec)
*sigh*
Syd Barrett was the man. Syd Barrett was Pink Floyd; he took them from relative unknowns with no direction, into psychedelic kings. Then he was kicked out, and they lost their creativity.
So the remaining pawns decided upon Gilmour as his replacement; a man with no songwriting background - just nifty guitar work. Gilmour was a more technical player than Barret, but he lacked the heart to fuel a band, and he lacked the balls to tell things as they were. Syd laced his coffee with LSD, spilled the depths of his brain through his Telecaster and went insane; Gilmour knew how to play arpeggios.
After Barrett left, Pink Floyd crashed - hard. They released some terrible albums, and they weren't writing as a band, and to make up for their lack of creativity, they started playing spacerock. It’s a substitute for hard work – sporadic notes in a blue tonal background. Its mysterious enough to pique interesting and stave off criticism, because you can’t tell if they’re trying to pull one over on you, or if they’re just trying to get through their contract.
Then, somehow, they pulled their shit together and released Dark Side..., which came out of nowhere - but managed to free them of their "Barrett" chains. Their masterpiece, their tour-de-force; of course their meaning PF sans Barrett.
And things were good. For a while.
But eventually a band needs to write a follow-up to a masterpiece - and that was Wish You Were Here, which was anything but a masterpiece. It was a safe album - one that the critics couldn't stomp on because it was a safe tribute to their creator, and one the fans would buy, because it was the safe manufactured sound. Wish You... was still a thousand times better than anything post-Barrett (save for DSOTM), but it wasn't original, it wasn't progressive, it wasn't really anything except a hammering-home of the "spacerock" that PF created post-Barrett.
The Wall was a conceptual gem, but a musical nightmare. Their creativity was spent, and Ezrin (the producer I think) was responsible for all those disco-riffs littered throughout the album. Again, that was safe because the masses would buy it. Instead of focusing on the composition, their “I’m the leader ‘cause I said so” frontman Waters worked on the live show. The goal, one assumes, is that by making the performance of the art more substantial than the art itself, that will somehow make up for the oversight. It worked.
Animals was good, and it's my favourite - but it not the best of Floyd by any means.
Sacrificing composition for production kills creativity, stifles progression, and splits bands up. Pink Floyd went from psychedelic kings, to spacerock hacks, to chart topping tools, to ass-kissing beggars, to irritated performers. Piper was the peak, Dark Side was the reprise, everything else falls somewhere in the middle.
Barrett was Floyd. A Floyd with a Barrett is barely a Floyd at all.
Pink Floyd is overrated.
P.S. Nirvana is overrated because they suck.

I think Elvis is overrated. I don't like any of his songs, and his movies are even worse. I know I am out of the generation range for him, but I don't see him as King of anything anymore. I understand and appreciate the impact he had on music, but I don't like his songs.
I don't think Nirvana is overrated. Kurt Cobain is at times, but I don't think Nirvana is.

yeah i just wanted to re-interate my point...
Take The Ramones. People will listen to them now and be like... WTF. and it doesnt sound like anything special. So they will be like these guys are increadibly over rated. Thats only because today its been way over done because of the huge impact The Ramones had on music. It sounds common place... When they were playing it though, they were like increadibly creative musicians... they were like thinking outside the box of popular culture. the only reason now it sounds so over rated is because everyone copied them, and it became common music.

Ummm... actually a lot of people consider Led Zep to be founders of metal. I am not sure myself, but this my interpretation.
Led Zep and Black Sabbath have a lot more in common than you would think and they were the bands who carried on from the Doors which were supposedly one of the first big bands to use darker lyrics. "Darker" as in bands which changed from happy folk stuff to Doors/LZ/Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath actually started the doom/heavy music and Led Zeppelin put in the fast riffs. Combine them both, add in a bit of Deep Purple and you have metal!!! I think of Judas Priest as the result of this. Elements of metal came from different bands (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zep etc.) but Led Zep was one of the main ones. These elements were probably things such as down tuning, heavier music, darker lyrics, faster riffs, more technical music, power chords etc. I don't know much about the theoretical side of music, but that is what I understand it to be.

Have You actually ever listened to The libertines? Obviously Not!
Asinine:
Utterly stupid or silly: asinine behavior.
Of, relating to, or resembling an ass.
If your trying to say there overrated you obviously havn't watched any award shows and watched them get robbed of every award they've been nominated for by the likes of Franz Ferdinand. (with The Exception of the Nme awards, they not what there on about)

I think Zamphir just said that to piss you off, because of your avatar. Maybe.
I think that Franz Ferdinand is overrated because they only have one album, and they think they're so cool because they had a major hit (Take Me Out). While I like Jet, I agree that they are overrated. They were picked to go on tour with OASIS. I mean they only have one album with four hits on it. Jeez.

you've got it all good til AC/DC and The Eagles. Definitely not two of the best bands ever, but also definitely not overrated.
i'll expand on some of what you have...
Nirvana: Kurt Cobain was a great songwriter but they were way too highly acclaimed and overplayed.
Guns N' Roses: Welcome to the Jungle was an ok song when it came out but, i mean, anyone can make a song about doing drugs. Axl Rose is a whiny little bitch too. White boy with cornrows...pathetic
Jimi Hendrix: Probably one of the most overrated guitarists of all time. Relied way too heavily on distortion and feedback to create his sound. Butchered the National Anthem.

Evanescence...they're almost painfully overrated.
I'm know they get a lot of attention, but they deserve all of it.

Franz Ferdinad

I have such a hatred for modern music.

Yes they have released one album, if you ask me the second album by a new band is more important than the first. It proves there not just a fluke. Also the second album will ruin bands such as Franz Ferdinand, Keane, the killers ect..

He's not crazy, he's right.
I'll admit, Kurt Cobain was a pretty good songwriter. That's all Nirvana had going for them. The music sounded sloppy and unpracticed. There was no skill involed with their songs. Kurt would just turn out a song and it seemed like they just put a tune to it.
Just cause Cobain killed himself, everyone thinks they have to feel bad for him. I would kill myself too if i was married to that [Courtney Love]. They're overplaed on the radio and, like /Tilt/ said, they receive praise for ruining music.
