There have been a few movies made in black and white, even after color film was long ago invented. List movies that were filmed in black and white, even when the technology was there for color. I recall my tv and radio professor asking us to list some off the top of our heads and we managed to get about 7 movies that were either completely filmed in black and white or partially. A couple I remember right now are Pi, Schindler's list and Clerks.
What do you think about watching movies in black and white, especially if the movie is mainly based on a good story and not special effects? Would you find it less appealing or would it not matter for you? What do you think about Time Warner colorizing classic films that were originally filmed in black and white? For example, the movie Casablanca. Should they have left these movies in its original form or do you think its a good idea to have color in all films? Here is an article showing that some strongly oppose colorization of the classics. (http://www.worldandischool.com/public/1987/july/school-resource12452.asp)
"The Following" is in black and white. Made by the same director from the movie "Memento." It's a damn fine story. Color brings the picture more to life while black and white makes it feel old. I would've liked it more if it was in color but thats not saying its a bad movie. Black and white is so plain, we need color so that our eyes can see things for what they really are. Its about trying to make an acted story seem as real as possible and that can't be done in shades of gray.

Some great Billy Wilder movies are black/white although color was available.

Eraserhead is a great movie in black and white. It wouldn't have been the same in color, it made it seem more dark and creepy.
Only certain movies are good in black in white though. B&W makes it seem more "dark and dirty", which is good.
I don't think they should restore the classics with color either, it just takes away the sentimental value of it.

I love watching old black and white, The Little Rascals, Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, The three stooges and on TVland they have "The Munsters", I say leave the classics black and white, thats part of the history will be losing if they turn them to colored.

A very emotional Black and White film I saw a long time ago was Shindler's List. I think it was more affective in Black and White for some reason.

God I tried watching that and never could make it through, yes very very emotional.
Another one that they made back in the 70's "Paper Moon", I rented it one time its really cute, but they made it in black and white to get that old movie effect.

Well, I personally love black and white movies, drama is better portrayed through the contrast extremes like that in my opinion, you can get much more artistic with it. Stanley Kubrick did this a few time one of my favorites being "Dr. Strangelove" made in the 60's well after color was invented.

I have this thing about Black & White movies. They are excellent films, but I can't really watch them without getting bored. I guess I am so used to colors and flash and brightness, when I see a black and white I have a hard time concentrating. I do love Casablanca though.

Dead Man was a good one.
Young Frankenstein was a classic, in its own way.
Ed Wood. Duh.
American History X was partially B&W and we all know the Jesusness of that film.
Of course, this is if we're talking about B&W when color was readily availible.

Two of David Lynch's films were BnW "Eraserhead" and "The Elephant Man".
My favorite film that was made BnW instead of colour is a French film called "La Haine".... It is an amazing film and one of my favorites of all time, alot of people havent even heard of it, it was made in 1996 I think and is set on a council estate in Paris, its about police brutality. The head of the Paris police I think it was wanted the film banned and it was shown to some major police officials to show them what they were up against during the Paris riots.
It is shot in BnW to add to the grittyness (if thats even a word) and it works, the film is more like art than a film with amazing camera shots.
Please someone take a chance on what Im telling you and buy/ download it, I garuntee you wont be dissappointed it realy is film making at its best. :bang:

Ones that have already been mentioned, Following, Dead Man, Dr Strangelove, Schindlers List, all good, and the B&W is used well.
No one has mentioned Pi yet??

Darth, I mentioned it in my first post, although I haven't seen the movie yet. I think I have a copy if I'm not mistaken.
James, I think you mentioned it before and I downloaded it after you recommended. It didn't have subtitles and was completely French, I don't know if I will understand and enjoy it. I'll give it a shot one day.
I want to make a B&W movie collection with modern films, not really the classics. I forget which movie studio it is, but they remove color periodically from all their screeners. I believe they do this to diminish the quality, but I actually like the effect.
