wow what a great site and forum. this is the first time i am posting in this forum so forgive me if i havent follow the correct forum ethics and rules. but i would like to start by asking for some recommendation to music. you see i have always want to expand my knowledge and experience in world music. but thus far, i have only tasted the "mainstream" categories of american media, genres such as rock, hip hop, and pop... you know stuff you hear on the radio. i certainly know that there are alot more stuff out there, and i have looked into, with a open mind, on alot of the new stuff that i've come across. like, recently i have been digging into the world of techno and trance, and some material are just amazing, and it make me feel good when listening. which sums up of me wanting more and more. so if any of you have any suggestions of music of your preference. will you please share them with me? help me expand my knowledge, so i dont sound like some fool... and also direct me to some channels or sectors of this vase interwebby where i can sample some new music. all would be much appreciated.

Here's some bands I suggest....

Heavy Metal: Metallica, Pantera, Black Label Society, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Tool (if you consider them heavy metal, also could be considered progressive rock) and Dream Theater(could be considered progressive rock as well) to name a few.

Classical Rock: Led Zeppelin, Yes, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and Pink Floyd to name a few.

Virtouso: Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Yngwie Malmsteen.

And one more band that I highly recommend is The Mars Volta. They are amazing and very unique. So there's some bands to start you off.

Get some Metallica (more than just Enter Sandman), Nirvana (you've probably heard Smells Like Teen Spirit, but dig a little deeper and there's some great stuff), The Doors, The Who, Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper (check out the song eighteen), some Incubus, Some Guns 'n' Roses, some Red Hot Chilli Peppers (excellent funky and catchy stuff), And DEFINENTLY some A Perfect Circle (not much radio play until "Passive" came out, so buy their older albums.

If you want to expand knowlege on music, you should listen to older music. There is some really good newer stuff too, but just listen as you please. My favorites are bands such as:

Beatles
Queen (70's- early 80's)
Foghat
Heart
Eddie Money
Lynyrd skynyrd

u can learn alot from metallica. they range from heavy metal to speed metal. they have their slower songs to. id also recommend children of bodom. they arent mainstream america, they r more popular in europe but they kick ass. id recomend u buy(cough) their album "follow the reaper". its more thrash/speed metal but very well made. gotta love the bonus track hellion. :bang:

got two words for ya my friend, Pink Floyd. Everyone claims to be a fan but i'm the number one person to go to for all of your PF knowledge. Not to brag or anything though...

Some other bands to check out...

Stevie Ray Vaughan
Kenny Wayne Shepherd
Mountain
Allman Brothers Band
Gov't Mule
Dave Matthews Band
Boston
Deep Purple
Led Zeppelin
Eric Clapton (especially his new cd, Sessions for Robert J)
Stone Temple Pilots
Pantera
Alice in Chains
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Black Sabbath
Black Label Society
Ted Nugent
---Among Others---

Things to stay away from:
Slipknot
Korn
Good Chralotte
New Found Glory
Blink 182/Boxcar Racer
Guns n Roses
Styx
Damn Yankees

Just generally try to stay away from all these new pop-punk fags who slit their wrists and tune their instruments way down and call it "metal"

welcome to the forum and enjoy your stay. good luck out there.

Few will ever truly understand music untill they can make it. I would definatly recomend picking up some form of an instrument and getting in touch with your creative side. Once you expirence the feeling of music first hand, then you will really understand. There is no greater feeling then being in front of a crowd that is appreciating the music you create.

go home productions (http://www.gohomeproductions.co.uk/) ' website has some amazing songs you can download too...

hes a DJ who specializes in mashing, or combining two songs together, and he has dozens of tracks you can download that are mixes of things like the beatles and radiohead, the doors and blondie, etc., and they're all great professionally done works of art. (this is kind of like that guy danger mouse who did the grey album combining jay-z and the beatles, but mark vidler's work is much better. enjoy!
