This could be interesting:

TORONTO (AP) -- An investment firm and a sports advisory company reportedly made a joint proposal to buy all 30 NHL teams for as much as $3.5 billion.

The two Boston companies were invited by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to present the highly unusual offer, the Toronto Star and Globe and Mail reported Thursday. Bain Capital Partners LLC and Game Plan LLC made their pitch Tuesday in New York to NHL owners, whose season has been shut down by a lockout.

Bain Capital spokesman Sam Hollander and Collin Vataha of Game Plan declined to immediately comment Thursday to The Associated Press.

The NHL, which because of its ongoing player lockout recently became the first major North American pro sports league to cancel an entire season, has said its teams have lost a collective $500 million over the past two seasons.

Before the work stoppage, the total value of the 30 NHL franchises was an estimated $4.9 billion, according to Forbes Magazine. The Detroit Red Wings topped the list at $266 million, with the Edmonton Oilers last at $86 million. The value of the arenas are part of the assessment.

"The substance of the presentation and the reaction of the board" are "internal league matters, and ones on which we are not prepared to comment further," Bill Daly, the NHL's chief legal officer, said in a statement Thursday.

Bain managing partner Steven Pagliuca, co-owner of the NBA's Boston Celtics, and Game Plan, which recently acted as an adviser on the sale of the Ottawa Senators, are betting that many NHL owners would welcome the chance to get out of the hockey business.

But it's unclear how team owners, especially those in large markets such Toronto, Boston and New York, would react to the proposal. Maple Leafs officials declined comment, the newspaper said, as did a Game Plan spokesman.

"I would imagine different clubs had different feelings," Daly told the Globe and Mail.

He said the league was compelled to listen based on the significance of the offer.

"When someone's offering over $3 billion, we felt we had an obligation to the board to have them, at least, hear it from the proposed purchaser," Daly added.

The purchase would not depend on the NHL reaching agreement with the players on a collective bargaining deal, the newspaper said, and a sale would not affect the status of the NHL Players' Association as the bargaining agent for players under U.S. and Canadian labor laws.

According to the newspaper, Bain and Game Plan said the sale would bolster the league's revenue because all the teams would work together to generate more local television, sponsorship and revenue instead of competing against one another.

The consortium reportedly told the NHL owners it had arranged for a large Canadian-based financier to join its efforts.

I don't think I like the idea of all team being owned under the same umberella. Seems like the perfect conditions for some not so fair play.

Why even bother?

The NHL failed.

Hockey is a regional sport that the NHL tried to take national way too fast.

What the hell is a hockey team doing in San Jose?

Absolutely nothing.

Owning all 30 teams may guarantee some play, but the NHL will drop even further into the ranks of the MLS.

When you get beat in the ratings by Arena Football, UNC-Greensboro vs. UNC-Asheville, the PBA, and the National Spelling Bee, I'm surprised anybody wants to buy you.

Its so silly, why would the Detroit Red Wings or Toronto Maple Leafs who are making cash hand over fist agree to this.

I agree with DeVaSTaTioN, hockey is a regional sport. They ruined the league by expanding to places where the only ice they know of is in their drinks.

Hockey is finished, it will never come back anywhere near where it was a few years ago. They will be getting a lot less air time and talk shows such as NHL Tonight even if they do comeback. I think pretty soon there will be a prime market for a national lacrosse league in the next few years and that will take its place. Lacrosse is actually surprisingly entertaining to watch, in case you're wondering.

Yeah, and its time has passed. It's a niche sport now, not that many people watch it unless they're channel surfing and it happens to be on espn.

I understand that, but hockey is an industry, just like any other sport. Its purpose is not really to make people like you happy. All the owners care about is money. Almost all of the franchises in the league are losing a couple of million dollars a year, the owners won't stand for this. This is the same reason why NFL franchise owners are happy; the league divides up the money and has an effective salary cap. I have nothing against hockey, I hope it comes back as well, you just have to look at it from the owner's point of view.

As I have said before other professional sports will follow this out come if it is favorable to the owners, there is a lot more at stake other than just hockey.

I miss hockey a great deal but I get my fix from the WHL and the BCJHL, and I'm ok with that, it's damn good hockey.

They need to make the rinks bigger. There will be less checking and more open game with better passing being required. Bigger stronger players will be replaced with smaller faster players. That will create more scoring. Another thing they need to do it, either require the goalies to where less padding or make the nets bigger. Along with implementing these changes, they need to create a hard salary cap, so that competition is level. Eventually the players will have to agree to a hard salary cap, they cannot out last the owners. Once there is a salary cap, I think they league will rebound, but it will take a few years.

I'm not a real big hockey fan, but I hope they over come this.

Yes because the New Jersey Devils got this style of play I hate, they get a lead early then just check and play defense, samsonov one of the smaller faster players on the bruins couldnt do nothing in the playoffs that year, if there was more room he would of been able to do his stuff.

Yes, and people still didn't take. It's a regional sport and it will always be that way. Putting hockey teams in places like San Jose and Dallas and Tampa Bay is laughable.

Expand your league where it's going to be watched.

Hockey is dead because 2/3 the country doesnt play hockey. I grew up playing football and now I watch football b/c I relate to it. I agree 100 percent it's regional, People don't understand the game. I think Hockey should be a world league. 4-5 Canadian and US teams v/s the rest of the world.

They need to remodel the sport too, not a major overhaul like the Nascar point system but maybe some rink size changes like jerky said.

While I agree with your point...support for the team in Dallas is huge.
