I would wait until you are pretty good until you go to a 98 custom, but i would recommend a kingman spyder imagine (electric) because they are fairly easy to operate and maintain at a super price and quality. That was my first gun and rarely chops paintballs or malfunctions, plus it only cost me about like $130 brand new or something.

i have an 03' vision shocker. its $825. i wouldn't reccomend it for a begginers gun. my first gun was a vision smart parts impulse, $425 i think, it worked fine. if your looking for a cheap gun go to www.actionvillage.com and look under tippman or spyder or something like that.

buy a tippmann 98 custom. I just sold mine on ebay for pretty cheap, but it's a very good gun for a beginner.

Eaither a 98c or a pump gun.

why pump?

Because then every shot counts and you will quickly not fall into newbish habits of spray and pray.

I would honestly give my best recommendations to any spider electric or semi-automatic because i have tried and sold nearly 15 different guns and every kingman i have owned has worked extremely well. They are really very reasonably priced and hold up very well during games and competitions. My old imagine like the one shown (exact color and such) is one of my favorite guns because it was so cheap and it shoots roughly 13 paintballs per second and a very accurate rate. It also doesnt chop paintballs very often even with the stock bolt i could go through a whole hopper and have about 3 or 4 broken paintballs along the way. You can find them all over like at GI joes or depending on where you live they're basically at any sports store. I wouldn't start off with anything else, and they compete with most high-end expensive markers very well.
