Upon further review...

1) The SS wasn't racing.
2) The SS wasn't even and SS! Notice no hood scoop and the spoiler goes straight across the rear hatch and doesn't arc up like the SS spoiler does.
3) The SS might have even been a V6 Camaro! Watch on the right side just below the right rear turn signal. No badges... Either a debadged Z28 or a V6. Video isn't good enough to see the exhaust or wheels so can't say for certain.

Either way he wasn't racing.

Against a British track racer, probably ot, but just about anything American that costs within 100k of the M3's price will lose.

I thank you for spelling the name of the truck correctly I really do but at the trucks strong point is like you said at the strip but mostly on the street. Shorting the race the better chance of the truck winning. But don't forget that the syclone isn't just a normal pickup. I've taking plenty of corners alot harder then I've taken in my c4 corvette or any of my mustangs.. now Granted they are not an m3 but damn close enough. I've seen videos and know of people that have autocrossed there syclones with great results. I'd say alot would come down to the driver but it would be alot closer then you would think.

True.. a 1000hp mustang isn't gonna out corner a 140hp pontiac fiero.. unless the 1000hp mustang was setup for cornering as well as striaght line. True but i would figure the syclone would excell better on the shorter tracks.. since it's advantage isn't long straight burst but rather short ones.. see with syclones.. they are quick as balls but fall flate on the top end due to there shape (aerodynamics like a brick) and there AWD system.. besides there not geared for anything longer then an 1/8 or 1/4 mile run. So if it was my truck and me driving vs an m3 in a tight twisty track i'd put money on my truck just like if the driver in an 03 cobra can drive.. and runs a m3 from a stop on the street... im gonna put my money on the cobra no doubt.

Any car can be rice, or have rice on it. It does NOT MATTER WHERE IT IS FROM. I have seen many high end Mercedes riced (slk55 amg, as an example), I have seen BMW's riced, I have seen just about any car riced up. So, no, there are indeed rice/riceable European cars, it is just less common to have "tuners" of that type over there, then here in America.

Meh, rice is all in the eyes of who is using the word. To me, my MR2 isnt riced out. I have an after market air dam and rear skirt. But I restored the car from the rust bucket it once was. Rice to me, is wanting to race everyone they see, pulling up beside them and calling them on.Actually thinking that cause you put on one of those big ass mufflers that it gives you 50HP. Thats rice.
I have seen some cars that are decked right out, vinyl and all that looked dam good. I personally dont like vinyl. Only thing on my car is the Toyota logo on the hood. To each his own. Realistically however, just about everyone who mods the engine has some body mods that don't do shit, so people usually differentiate between "tasteful mods" and "shitty ass fucking piece of gay shit rice". We are the worlds leading food producer, and we produce the best quality food in the world.

To me "rice" is any mod that doesn't alter performance, but makes it seem as if your car is faster. IE: make it look faster with new bumpers, make it sound faster w/ a fart cannon, big rims to tame all that HP, etc.

I have a 323, not a 328. and you cant change physics with money. Unless you chopped the chassie and made it wider and shorter, there is nothing that you cold do to make the all around performance match a german sports car. Transmissions are a tricky thing. It's true that in most cases a manual will outperform an automatic based solely on the drivers control over the shift points. HOWEVER, a good racer knows how to adjust his automatic. The right torque converter, and shift kit will get the most out of your shifting, which cannot be replicated by a manual transmission. Especially with racing, manual transmissions leave a lot of room for human error.

I use an automatic tranny in my 85 stang because a) it's a city car...manual transmissions in this stop and go shit are a pain in the sack.

and b) When tuning my motor at the track, I don't have to factor in my shift points to zero in on my engine adjustments. It's about 1000 times easier with an auto tranny.

Also, when that first and second gear torque wraps my head against the headrest, I like to have both hands on the wheel ;)

Tech, I'm not saying the KB Cobra in the video won't beat 3Series, I'm just saying 1FST4V's car won't beat 3Series haha. I too don't believe that he owns that car. Without concrete proof. When I got my 85, it didn't run. The doggy 302 was burning oil, exhaust was broken, springs all worn out, no stereo, running rich etc.. Anyway, it was a real POS. I got a lot of attention cause of the bright color of it. Girls love a mustang haha. My girlfriend HATED it. Well, she went through her stages. When I brought it home she said it was nice...when I finally started it up she said it was really nice, when I took it for a spin and the ladies were like "ooo, I like your car" she hated it. When I built it up a bit and let her drive it, she loved it again. When I told her she can't drive it anymore because she can't stop burning up my rear tires she was angry. When she moved, and bought a Camaro I was angry. When her Camaro shit the bed because it was an absolute shitbox that she overpayed for, I was happy again. When I offered her my mustang, she was happy again. When I told her no fucking way she was angry again. When I went down and fixed her Camaro, we were both neutral. When I pulled out her 3.8 and put in a 5.7 she was happy, I was happy, and then she crashed it anyway.

Now she's a douchebag and I hope she dies behind the wheel of her Eagle Talon or whatever the fuck she's driving now.

The corvette driver needed More Cubic Inches and most likely an intercooled stage 2 or 3 ATI Procharger even though the corvette cost a ton more then the cobra to begin with LOL and is lighter and more aero dynamic.. haha which is really lame.. besides.. racing from a roll is gay as shit..

NO I stated the fact that even though the corvette had aerodynamics, weight, and cubic inches over the cobra... the corvette still needed forced induction or intercooled supercharged power to beat the cobra.. it's kinda like putting your car up against a 95 ford escort.. yes you have the aerodynamics and cubic inches advantages but you go the extra step and add tint to destroy that escort in a race.

I was saying that my car has less then 1/3 the hp than the cobra, not the vette. I was saying that my car would get killed in a straight line, but own the cobra in the curves, because of the basic design.

a BMW would probably not own a cobra on a track, just plainly due to the fact that it has over 2 times the hp. that makes quite a big difference... nevermind the bends, there´s road between them too...

but, i agree with 3series. the handling of the BMW is superior to the cobra, and if it would have more hp it could keep up.

Alright, to end this, "my car" would prob get beaten on both track and drag strip because of lack of horse power. But that does not change that fact that german cars would destroy a cobra in taking a turn and all around its a much more solid car, and give it enough hp, on both a drag strip and a track. The cobra is great at going in a straight line, but you cant comapre it to something like an M3 or a S4

Why does everyone think American sports cars only go in straight lines. I've out driven a mercedes kompressor on the highway before (It wasn't the safest thing to be doing in traffic, but I drive fast in and out of lanes regardless of who's trying to outdo me)

You'd be surprised how much better your car can handle with a strut tower brace, new control arms and shocks/springs, and subframe connectors. Mine is as solid as a rock, and handles great. I'd have no problem taking it to the track and putting it up against a BMW. Even if I hesitate on the turns a little more, I'd smoke in the straightaways anyway.

Why does everyone think American sports cars only go in straight lines. I've out driven a mercedes kompressor on the highway before (It wasn't the safest thing to be doing in traffic, but I drive fast in and out of lanes regardless of who's trying to outdo me)

You'd be surprised how much better your car can handle with a strut tower brace, new control arms and shocks/springs, and subframe connectors. Mine is as solid as a rock, and handles great. I'd have no problem taking it to the track and putting it up against a BMW. Even if I hesitate on the turns a little more, I'd smoke in the straightaways anyway.

And for the record, believe it or not, I can drift just fine in my muscle car ;) I know, I know, I know, it's unheard of, but it's true. :thud:
I dont think that they absolutly suck, but they are not very close to a german car just because of the long and thin muscle car design. But they are not that, or they have gotten alot better. My uncle has an 02 Camero SS and a Pontica GXP. The camero was very capable and fast as balls. But when we were race a guy in a 540i through the ravines of PA. We got destroyed. But straight out, there is no doubt of who would win.

No, compared to a audi, bmw or mercedes. Muscle cars tend to have a longer wheel base and are narrower. Just look at a picture. But i would consider the corvette wider and shorter, at least the C5 & C6

Considering your Mustang is modified, I will rate it the same as a Chrysler Crossfire/Mercedes C320. I donno bout hockenheim, the M3 is not a slow car. 0-60 in either 4.8 or 4.8, cant remember. Not as fast as the cobra prob, but able to compeat all the same. And the M3 is meant for running at high speeds on the autobaun. So if the straights were long enough, the M3 might have an advantage.

But it dosnt matter. Both cars have there advantages, and we could talk shit all year. But im tired of this. Thanks for ending this you guys.

so no the SS could not get it "handed to him" actually if they bothed raced stock the SS would begin to pull away after a little under the 1/8th mile mark, not by a lot but a noticable amount, and it all depends on auto or manual shift points, did both drivers shirt at the same notations in rpm's to the gears? there are way to many factors to count to decide who would win based on stats online, you would need to see them go at it in person

Now as to not confuse people, not i do like the SVT cobra, somewhat, yes a do like the SS, somewhat, i have no opinion to biase myself in this topic

At least a spoiler will help somewhat, even if your car cannot reach the spoilers most effective speeds. I have run a '03 and a '04 Cobra in my SS. Once was on the strip (great guy driving the '04) and he had done a few mods. Don't ask me what they all were. This was early last year and all I can remember for sure was a pulley change. With my mods I pulled him pretty good. He put down a 11.8X to my 11.2X. But that is after I had put 20K plus into engine and suspension mods.

Even with the mods I've done I'm only putting down 437rwhp. But with the suspension adds and Mickey ET's she does quite well.

The other time was on the street and with Nitto 555 Extreme II's on. I never got a chance to talk to that guy, just the wave and smile thing. He hung with me really well and even pulled me out of the hole. I gathered him up by the end of second gear and pulled about a half car length through third and fourth.

Once I get the stroker kit in and maybe change the gears to 4.11's I would really like to run a Kenne Bell Cobra.

Being a pretty staunch bow tie kind of person, I have always bought into the Chevy vs. Ford thing. In fact I had a license plate bracket made for when I auto crossed the SS. It read: Camaro SS THE Cobra killer. It was true at the time. Now it's a misnomer though. Stock for stock a '03-'04 Cobra will destroy a SS.

I gotta take my hat off to Ford on these Cobras. They are wicked quick and if GM doesn’t get off the stick and build a new Camaro soon, I will be selling my ’00 to get the new Shelby GT500. Hell, it’s time to do a F/I car now that my SS project is about to meet all my goals for it.

The 3 series has good handeling cause it has near perfect weight distribution. The battery is in the trunk, along with alot of other components. So that helps too.

Agreed. I relocated my batt to the trunk. Moved a lot of stuff back. Power steering removed Smog stuff removed. A lot lighter up front. Engines moved back like I mentioned. so that helps. Interior is in the process of being gutted. Bunch of other stuff. I'm trying to balance her out real good. I wanna get as much weight to the rear as I can for the drag strip.

The 98-02 Z28 has exactly the same motor as the SS. The only differences are as follows:

The SS has 17" wheels with lower profile tires. The Z28 sits on 245/50-16 tires while the SS sits on 275/40-17. While the larger contact patch may seem to favor the SS it does not make up for what is needed most for a good ET... Sidewall flex on a 50 vs. a 40 series is enough to garner much better launches and thus better 60' times. Not to mention the tire/wheel combination on the SS adds weight to the car.

While the SS claims (in 2002) to produce 25 additional horsepower with an optional airbox lid and exhaust, dynos have shown that gap is more like 10-15 horsepower with it only putting down 8-10 more rwhp. The way that SLP garners additional ponies is to add what is the equivalent of a cold air intake (some call it a ram air type system but it's been proven not to give an actual ram air effect). Again the hood with the added ductwork for the scoop and the scoop itself adds more pounds to the SS. The only other difference is the exhaust system. It is no where near as efficient as aftermarket cat backs and you know how much power those add... In fact if you go for the optional center mounted exhaust you gain more weight from the additional plumbing and the weight added by the rear facia.

The SS has a larger sway bar than the Z28, adding yet more weight and not helping the ET in the least.

The SS has a taller rear spoiler which, once again, adds weight and offers no quarter mile improvements.

With all the stuff added to the SS the curb weight is 3554 lbs while the Z28 weighs in at 3439 lbs. 115 pounds might not seem like a lot but the added weight combined with the lower profile tires makes the SS harder to get a good hole shot with.

The Z28 was rated (or should I say under rated) at 310hp and the SS rated at 335hp with the optional intake/exhaust.

Truth of the matter is this. The LS1 produces very, very close to the same horsepower in all the different cars it was put into. The Z28 actually has closer to the same bph as the Vette than GM advertised. They didn't want to alienate Vette buyers by saying a $25,000 car had the same (or close to the same) horsepower as their $45,000 flagship. So the Camaro got under rated. The dynos back me up on this.

I had a very good feeling it was weight, iwth all the optionals on the SS, it really weighed it down, i mean i do see their point in doing all of those optional changes, but it really didn't effect them, most people these days buy a car by looks, as long as it has decent bhp, it has to look good though, so the SS was their car for that job, people want larger wheels more things in the engine that may not help their acceleration in the least, but the sway bars really could help it on track so i think that was a healthy decision, the rear spoiler of the SS could have used to have been angled to create more downforce (thus putting more pressure on the back tires aswell as giving the car more handling) the wheels were no question, personally i have always hated the SS wheels, for some reason i like the RS ones, they just look nicer.

I really do think, while the SS has it's downs that really never made it a superior drag car to the Z-28 it's optional equiptment was aimed to more of a road friendly drive, with a better feel of the road and a more refined sense of state

I used to have 4.20's in my old 7.5 rear end on the stang. Gave me a lot of wheel hop. Couldn't drive on the highway because after about 3 miles my rear end would be whining and my top end would be gone.

swapped back to the factory 3.23's and when I swap a new detroit locker on the rear end I will be putting in 4.10's. Then, and only then, it will be a track only car.

I Could always go with a 3.73 gear. Decent for getting out of the hole, and mild on the street. We'll see what happens I guess.

Lately my car has been making a squeking noise coming from the rear end. I Have no clue as to what it could be. It usally only happens when ive been driving awhile. Its not a noise the shocks or joints would make and it doenst make the noise any louder when i go over a bump.It also sometimes happens when im taking off. I bought the car with 103000 miles on it now it has 110000 miles on it. To be honest it's done it since i had the car.When i got it had a cowl induction hood. So im wondering could there be like rear gears or something back there i dont know about? I really dont know?

Alright, to end this, "my car" would prob get beaten on both track and drag strip because of lack of horse power. But that does not change that fact that german cars would destroy a cobra in taking a turn and all around its a much more solid car, and give it enough hp, on both a drag strip and a track. The cobra is great at going in a straight line, but you cant comapre it to something like an M3 or a S4

Heh, yeah. i´m pretty sure my other car, a mighty opel kadett 1.3 wouldn´t destroy a cobra in the bends. but on the strip? well, nah, probably not. :rolleyes: (i think it has ~40 working horses... when it decides to run...)

but to be honest, it has to have decent handling to deliver all that power to the ground (the cobra, that is, not the kadett...), and to not be the most lethal car in the world. i mean, come on, it has a lot of power, and it simply has to handle to not kill everyone...

I dont care if it is your car or not, but a race is where 2 cars are lined up at a certain spot and when they are flagged to go they gun it. I could pull up along side a jet airplane thats parked, honk and gun it and say i beat a jet. No pride in that what so ever.

I know it's a somewhat oldish post...but either R&T or MT did a 1/4 mile against an F16 I believe, with a 'Vette, and beat it. Of course, after about a mile or so the F16 would be out of sight within seconds :D.

i think it was just a stock viper. I remember seeing that on tv. The viper ended up winning by like 1 tenth of a second. After that the F16 just walked away like nothing.

I was just gonna mention that I saw it on Ripleys believe it or not. Thanks for ruining that for me Tech.

He had the F-16 in the quarter, but just barely lost in the full mile. The driver was the guy who actually designed the dodge viper. Pretty neat race.

i'm pretty sure it's in the 600bhp ballpark, mabey 575, not much different engine wise from the regular viper but the suspension, brakes, ecu, ect. are dramaticly changed

Oh, so not too different really. So.....let's assume it has a 10-10.5 second 1/4 mile then (probably in that range, but it may not be......just assume.). Even if it is a 10 second 1/4 mile, the Venom would still have a 2 second lead over it. Holy crap that is FAST! :eek:
