Along the same lines - I hate when there's some song you hear CONSTANTLY and only after hearing it for the billionth time do you actually listen to what the song is saying and then you're all: "Wow, these lyrics are actually pretty good".. Then you just feel stupid. -- or is that just me?
I've said too much haven't I? -- sigh... later. :p

Yeah, Jethro Tull is awesome...
I agree with The Kids Aren't Alright by The Offspring.
Also, I think a lot of Modest Mouse songs have lyrics to ponder. "3rd Planet" and "The View" are two good examples.
I am the Walrus by The Beatles makes you think about what it actually means...

Space Oddity- by David Bowie
awsome song. i love everything in it. it's kind of a sad song, but when you start hearing the guitar, you seem to want to just stop at what you're doing and listen to it.
also, Battle of Evermore- by Led Zeppelin is a very cool and strange accoustic that i never would have expected from Led Zeppelin.

The Beatles--Strawberry Fields Forever
"Let me take you there cause I"m going too....Strawberry Fields"
At first I was like, WTF is Strawberry fields, but I ask a friend what Strawberry Fields mean. He said he used to be a herion addict, so that explains how the Traces in your arms are compared to strawberry seeds. Thats why its called strawberry fields cause of the traces in his arms. It makes sense once you think about it.

Metallica - Unforgiven
Every time I hear it I can't help but wonder what their inspiration was, and what the lyrics are a metophor for in actual life. I've managed to gather it is about being outcasted and emotionally / physicly beaten in the past then rising up above the ones who tortured them. But i've always sensed something much deeper in that song that I can't really put my finger on.

No, maybe in your friends case he can relate being an addict, but this song isn't about heroin and The Beatles didn't do heroin.
It was the name of a Salvation Army orphanage near John's house he used play. The song is roughly about consciousness.
