How do you take a clip from a dvd?

How do u take like a scene from a dvd and convert it to avi or mpeg. I have a dvd-burner but is there a program that i can do that with?

DVD XCOPY was great, but i heard that the movie association is going after them for making it too easy to copy dvd's. Makes you wonder what will happen if the current issues in congress pass. Aparently they want to be able to prosecute anyone who's items make copyright infringment possible. :censor:
