I've been trying to setup my computer to record pranks. But the quality of the speaker/mic method is poor. The victims on the other end cannot make out what is being said half the time either. Also it is a pain in the neck.

My old 56k modem has mic and speaker 3.5mm jacks on the back, so I think I can use these to record much higher quality pranks if I can make my modem dial a number and then sit idle for the rest of the call.

This way I can pipe sounds in through the mic input and record the speaker output without any nasty ambient noise!

So, does anyone know how to make the modem do this very simple task:

- Dial number.
- Hold line.

There is software out there to do much more complicated stuff, sending faxes, networking to other modems etc etc etc. All I want it to do is dial a number and then sit idle. It must be possible. Any ideas?

Thanks

I would try using phone dialer that comes with windows. In xp its called hyperterminal. I'm pretty sure it will work. Just try it to a cell phone, or a friend to see if it works. It seems pretty easy to configure, I would help but I don't have a modem.

You have to set a higher Bit Rate. On Microsoft Sound Recorder, click file-properties-(all formats)-convert now:

Name: untitled
Format: PCM
Attributes: 48.000 KHZ, 16 Bit, Stereo, 187 kb/sec

And there you go. Dunno how to help you with recording a modem call, because it's too complicated.
