Potato launcher turns goes pipe bomb

Some friends and i decided to rocket off a few spuds in a potato launcher that i made . first few went fine , but then something went wrong , and the damn thing exploded , sending PVC shards into my hand. but its funny to see and listen to .

my friends and i did that years ago. it was stationary , so we couldnt hold it when we fired. but we put propane and hairspray which worked like a charm.. got a little fire show too out :p

we usualy used propane . ANd yeh , pvc is uslay good, but i think all the stress of explosions , and mixing of chemicals messed it up . i am workin on a aluminum , c02 powered cannon . Yeh , and about my hand being blown off , as you see there was a layer of duct tape put around it.. for good measure , that collected most of the little shards and shit that would have been in my body now

Hehe, nice. I used to do that with a bunch of my friends. I actually have blueprints for a stationary cannon on a rotating base somewhere in my room. My plans were made with steel pipes in mind, hooked up to one of those large home heating propane tanks by a shutoff valve.

Years ago some co-workers and I made a monster...It was HUGE.
5 foot barrel....expansion chamber 2 ft x 4"....
The barrel became rifled after a few dozen launches....

I wont go into any of the specifics of the evil design and what made it tick.

I will say....potatoes would go BLOCKS !
And once...it was fired into a block wall...I did it. :insane:

The spatter and near vaporization of the potato was something to behold.
Its amazing how much water they have in them.

they arnt really hard to make. tricky . and yeh , my first plans where of metal. then i didnt have a welder , then then i was gonna hook up propane straight to it with a trigger mechanism . but i didnt trust the tank being hooked up to it when it was fired . I actualy modified that same cannon , i like fiber glassed to back together and now it shoots for ever . way way out of sight . I am working on a new project now. Project X , gonna make a isnane C02 powered one . I was inspired by almost losing my hands

Anyway . that spud launcher could chuck a potato for a kilometer , except that time it busted so it had no force. and yeh , it would be hard to make summin like that act as a bomb . But it did explode , it cracked it in half and blew the back part out , which is screwed in good. it was just barely staying on that , and it ripped off all the threads . So yeh , i got lots of footage of the thing actualy workin good.. but thats no fun to watch.

Should use something thicker for the combustion chamber.

Those guns can shoot spuds over 700 feet !

and yeh. pvc only comes in like one thickness and this shit is pretty thick. takes alot to bust open a half inch of heavy duty , fire proof plastic . i will deffenitly go metal next time. and yeh , this one is timid compared to what im making now. the barrel alone is like 5 feet , the expansion chamber is the same width , but like 3 feet long , so the pressure wont blow up up .

how thin was that pvc b/c ive got 2 spud guns 1 uses propain and the other is air powerd and runs off about 180 psi and ive never had any problems

Pvc comes in loads of thicknesses..... different diameters and wall thickness ! :p Go to a good plumbing store.

Use the pressure rated piping... far safer and wont do that ! :p

mine was half inch in thickness... and i know why it exploded.. one reason is that the potato was jammed in to well , and also there were was a harshh mix of chemicals in that thing . it had residue of like , spray deoderant , hairspray.. like.. fuckin oven cleaner ,, every areosol potent thing we could find , and the residue builds up and catches on fire and shit. Like after , when it blew up i dropped it , and when the camera was off , the plastic inside was like on fire from build up . i was thinkin , i should make a movie on how to make potatoa launchers.. maybe ebaum would put it up
